My story begins back in June of 2005, it was a wonderfully happy time in our lives. We were expecting our third child; a girl. We already had both a daughter and a son and were thirlled to be giving them a sister.
I went to my pre-nate appoinments every month, then every week a month proir to my due date. I met with my OBGYN, we talked about a birth plan. I would be induced a week prior to my delivery date becouse I tended to deliver broad shoulder babies. This worked out well during my second deliver of my son just 2 and 1/2 years prior.
The date was chosen, June 28th 2005; I checked into the local hosipatol with my husband and by 7am my induction began. Two hours later, my OBGYN without an ultra sound, or with any immediate danger, changed her mind and ambushed my husband and I with " I think you should have a c-section"
We were cought off guard, surprised, in aw! What happend to our 8 months of pre-nate appointments, why did she not mention this during our birth plan, why did she schedule to have me induced! She didn't back down, she through every card " your baby could loss the use of her arms, have nerologial damage, dislocated shoulder....". For four hours we went back and forth on this new decission. When we finally, beaten down , gave in to my better instinct. The c-section was scheduled for 2:30 in that afternoon.
I was given my epadural, wheeled into the OR and our beautiful baby girl was born within minutes. The proud Daddy got her footprints inked to his for arm and I began to.... vomit!
That's the moment my ALS journey began.
It started with the contiunes vomitting and then what felt like a continues drangage down my throat. This lead to a year of being treated for a Sinus Infection. When that was finally ruled out I was to my first Neouraligist, who, bless his heart, tested me for everything including West Niles. He noticed a slight tremor in my tounge and some numbness throughout my face.
Stumped he then refered me to U of M for more testing. They tested, and tested and tested some more. I was given mulitiple EEG, Spinel Taps and gave many viles of blood; it was mind bogling. After four months of testing and finding that I had difficulty swallowing cubed pairs and showing my speech had progressivly gotten worse, I was diagnosed with ALS on my daughters Second Birthday.
That was June 2007 and today is January 2010... So what have I been doing....
I have been raising my children while living with ALS. I no longer have the ability of speech. My youngest daughter had never know me to talk and my son doesn't remember when I could read to him.
This doens't slow me down, any! I have a device that I can type on and it will speak for me, when I use it. Being a mom, means being busy and that is not condusive to carring around a 4lb device to help me talk. So I squeek - for the most part I get myself heard.
Just two days after Christmas my husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabeaties, that has been the big focus for us recently. Changing his food habits and ours. Getting him into all the docotors he needs to see. The focus is not me for once, not that I like him being sick, it's just simply different.
My ALS is progessing now, it's in my right arm and hand, it's effting my balance and my walking at times. I know what is to come and how fast it may be coming, that is why I am finally sharing my story after years of thinking about doing it, I have finally started to do it-
