An Artist
Robert Jonathan Pabon started his writing career at a very young age when he began to write short stories based off of solely his imagination. As a young writer he rarely received ideas from the television screen, yet notions flew through his mental at the speed of light because of his mothers demanding ways when it came to making him read every day after school regardless of what homework he was assigned. At the age of 8 he was reading Shakespeare and reciting Shakespeare's Poetry, unfortunately that soon faded away as all young passions seem to do.
Picking up the art of song was his next mission but he would never pursue a career in his hidden passion, because somewhere deep down there were other dreams he wished to fulfill.
In college at DePaul University his dreams turned into reality when he started writing Poetry which evolved into Floetry and then ultimately Spoken Word. Basing his flow off of a Hip Hop cadence and looking to artists such as Jay Z, Eminem, and Nas for guidance when it came to content and his voice he began performing throughout the city of Chicago. Performing in front of crowds of more than hundreds of people was something that humbled Pabon, but also strengthened his voice as an artist.
During this time in his life, he also served as the Arts and Literature Copy Editor for AHORA DePaul, a bilingual newspaper that served its community through providing articles based on cultural and social justice issues. On top of being the Arts and Literature Copy Editor, Mr. Pabon Executive Produced and Co-Hosted a radio show called Underground Resistance that aired on Radio DePaul. "Radio DePaul allowed me to find my voice as an interviewer and cyber journalist. It was where I found my voice as an artist and writer as well, because it brought me close to other artists, the artists I interviewed and the ones that got their music played on our show." Pabon explains.
However, one must not forget his passion for writing as being the main reason Pabon expanded his horizons within the plethora of projects he has been a part of. “My father was a poet and my mother is a novelist. If anything should make sense in this world it is that my ultimate passion is being an artist. Some might ask what that means but to me it means I am a writer, a performer, an explorer, and a passionate activist for human rights for all.”
Pabon continued his career as an artist this past year by committing himself to the building up of a non profit organization known as I.Dia, Inc. This organization his baby something he has always dreamed of because it is an organization that is dedicated to serving the community through art, music, and media. The first program that has been created through I.Dia, Inc. is RadioDotCom an internet radio station that is in building mode, but that is also dedicated to its community and will be showing its dedication by providing empowering programming and quality music. “RadioDotCom will be a radio station for the people just like I feel my art is for the people.” Pabon explains.
RadioDotCom is in building mode but already Pabon has created a buzz with the help of many people close to his heart and if the past tells us anything about the future our artist will be moving forward with many other projects in the near future. In fact, Pabon is scheduled to publish a compilation of his written spoken word pieces by the end of Winter 09. Be sure to look out for his articles and books who knows what he will do next.
