The Wiz Biz and Wiz Biz II by Rick Cook
These books are rather old and might be hard to find.
The stories are about a hacker who suddenly finds himself in another world, where magic rules the people. No one knows why he was summoned as the wizard that performed the summoning died. This is of course all very confusing to Walter (the hacker) who has to deal with a very different world compared to the high tech world he only knows about. That there exists magic just makes it more confusing for Walter, he does find a way where he can use his talents as programmer to create very powerful magi in this strange world.
The books are writing with a great humor.

Pushing Ice
Price: $3.95
List Price: $7.99 |
Pushing Ice by Alastair Reynolds
The story starts on an asteroid where the crew of a mining spaceship is trying to get ice (Pushing Ice is what they do). Suddenly the whole mission changes shape into a mission for mankind as a 'moon' from Saturn suddenly starts to move away from the system. It turns out that this is not a 'moon'...
The story takes place over GREAT distance and over a LONG time and is full of surprises and twists.

The Swarm: A Novel
Price: $5.90
List Price: $24.95 |
The Swarm by Frank Schätzing
Are you concerned about the earth and all the animals and if you ever think about what nature could do against the changes that humankind are doing. Then grab this book. The whole story takes place in or around what and illustrates many sudden attacks from nature (but is there a connection?). Teams of scientists around the world are trying to figure out what is going on before the world stops to exist as we know it. The book raises several issues that will make the reader step back and think about the world.

The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan
I never heard about Trudi Canavan before I found these books, so I was a bit unsure if it was my style. So I just bought the first book and not long after I was in the store again to get the rest.
As the title says, this is about magic and also black magic. The story takes place in a society where magic and the teaching of it is controlled by the priests, the common people are not allowed to have any magic talents. So when a girl from the slums suddenly uses magic to throw a stone through the priests shield it sends shocks through the priest. The story is about this girl and how see learns about magic; both the good and the bad side of it.

Priestess of the White (Age of the Five Trilogy, Book 1)
Price: $1.46
List Price: $7.99 |
Age of the Five Trilogy by Trudi Canavan
After reading "The Black Magician Trilogy" I had no doubts when I found "Age of the Five Trilogy" and bought them all 3. The main problem with this trilogy and also the other trilogy is that there are just 3 books in each story. Wish that not only a trilogy.
Again the story is about magic and a woman who are taught in magic. But the story line has nothing in common with the Black Magician series. Here we are learning about the gods and how they give magic to the people and even let's a few people act on their behalf. The book is full of surprises.
This is also a trilogy that I can recommend very highly.
Enjoy reading
I hope these super mini reviews are helpful for other book lovers. If you already read the books then I would like to hear what you thought about them.
