Potty Training 101

Most kids are ready to be potty trained between 2 and 3 years of age.  Boys tend to be on the latter end of this scale. Some kids have an easy time being potty trained, while for others it's more difficult.  It took two tries for my daughter, who is almost 4 now, to become completely potty trained.  I tried too early the first time around.  She was a verbal child and I thought mentally and emotionally ready, but she wasn't physically ready yet. The second time we tried a few months later, it only took 2 days.  Of course, there were a few accidents along the road, but she was wearing panties full time after the second try.  Here are a few things that helped me through this transition.

When should you start?

Deciding when to start potty training is the most crucial step in the process.  If you start potty training too early, it can take months to be successful.  This is difficult for the child and can be extremely frustrating for the parent too.  Look for these clues when starting to potty train.

  1. Your child is verbal enough to let you know when he/she has to go potty.
  2. Your child can easily walk to the toilet.
  3. He/She can verbalize when they are going in their diaper.  This is a sign of readiness, but when they let you know before they need to go, it's time to start.
  4. Your child stops playing to have a bowel movement.
  5. Your child wakes up from the night with a dry diaper (this isn't a necessity, but it is a big help)
  6. Your child's diaper is dry for long periods, then extremely wet.  This demonstrates that they are not going small amounts throughout the day, but mostly at one time.
  7.  Your child is interested when you go to the bathroom and shows a motivation to go as well.
  8. Your child can follow simple directions.
  9. You haven't gone through any big transitions lately (a new baby, a move, etc.)

Helpful Motivators

When my daughter was ready to be potty trained we went to Target and bought a new toilet and underwear.  She was very involved in this and it helped to get her excited about the new process.  We also bought a few kids' books on Potty Training to read while she was on the potty.

Dr. Phil recommends buying a doll that drinks and goes potty.  Your child can help the doll put on panties and go potty, then you give the doll a party.  When you're finished, your child goes potty and is given a party.  We didn't do the party part, but the doll was a great idea.

Many parents give stickers or treats for going potty.  I would beware of the food as a reward concept.  Personally, I'm more fond of the positive reinforcement with words and encouragement.

Now Go For It!

Now you're ready to try. Here are a few last helpful hints:

  1. Set aside at least one day with no outings.
  2. Provide a lot of liquids. The more your child drinks, the more they will have to use their potty.
  3. If it's warm outside, let your toddler run around with just underwear. It's much easier to get quickly to the potty.
  4. Set a timer for every 2 hours to get on the potty. If they don't go, set it for 10 more minutes to keep trying.
  5. Give a lot of encouragement!

Fabulous HubPage Robin. Everything I would have said!
Here are some extra tips:
To help them drink lots of liquids, give them salty foods- hotdogs, chips, pretzels, etc. and offer drinks that they don't normally get- fruit punch, lemonade, chocolate milk. Not the healthiest, but hey, it is one day!

My FAVORITE potty book Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi. Maybe it is a boy thing, but my son still finds it hysterical, and we read it all the time (on and off the potty).

Also, I put my son in pull-ups for nap and night-time to be on the safe side at first. I told him they were special sleeping underwear, so he didn't think they were like a diaper.

Hi Robin! Ohh, I'm in the throes of this now. We started diligently working with Rieley (my 2 1/2 year old girl) early this summer in hopes she'd be potty trained by fall and thus be able to join Tripp at his new pre-school (must be potty trained). She did really great for about a month, with no accidents, but needed constant bribing to sit on the toilet to go. By August, I think she felt too stressed (most likely because we were, since we hated the idea of her spending an entire school year in a different school than Tripp because of logistics) and gave up and refusede to sit on the toilet anymore. It was a good lesson to us that it needs to be in her own time. We'll try again in a few months, but won't push it.

I love your hubs!!!

Great hub page Robin. We managed to potty train our two girls quite easily but later had problems with our youngest daughter wetting the bed.

It was a horrible experience and we managed to find some great tips to solve this problem without resorting to medical / chemical based solutions at:

Well worth a visit if you're looking to solve bed wetting problems in your kids. ;0)

This is wonderful info! My son is just 19 months but is already expressing interest in the potty. I'm not going to try just yet, but I'm gearing up and gathering advice to tackle it in the future. Your tips were great!
