Good Rice At a Price
Making “proper rice” is an art form practically as old as the hills (or at least most hills). The Salton Rice Cooker doesn’t go back quite that far, but it is a durable appliance guaranteed to cook the perfect amount of rice for two or three people every time you use it. Although it does deliver that promise faithfully, the Salton Rice Cooker is very messy to clean and many consumers complain that if you don’t eat the rice quickly, it will dry out. (One way to avoid this result is to only invite very boring people to dine with you. With little to talk about, nothing will divert you from your mission to eat the food before you as quickly as possible.)The Salton Rice Cooker is compact and lightweight and stands about 6 inches X 6 inches. The interior is made of aluminum and has markings along the side of the container to help you measure the proper combination of water and rice (an age-old dilemma that even Confucius had trouble with). It cooks the rice fairly quickly and perfectly in about 15-20 minutes, but even though the package instructions don’t say so, some users claim it is best to use a bit more water than recommended because of the fact that rice can suddenly dry out. Some consumers claim that the Salton Rice Cooker is very economical and ideal for a “first rice cooker.” This appears to be true, but you must remember that if time-saving is a factor in your life, you won’t save much with this appliance because the quickness of cooking the rice is negated by the time you will have to spend scrubbing the aluminum pan free from the rice residue that sticks to the bottom. The Salton Rice Cooker also cannot keep the rice warm and fluffy for more than 15 minutes after the light turns off. The more expensive cookers, however, do have this function. Some other complaints about the Salton Rice Cooker concern its lid, which is not sealed properly. When the rice boils, it is not always secure and when this happens, starchy water can and often does spill out onto the kitchen counter. The Salton Rice Cooker has its good points. The question remains: Are there enough there for YOU?For more information:http://www.amazon.com/Salton-RA3-3-Cup-Rice-Cooker/dp/B00005B6Z4
