Mr. Webster, What Do You Think?

The Sharp Zaurus CMP2000R Electronic Dictionary, which is all the rage in Korea and Japan, is so much more than just a dictionary. (Mr. Webster, rest easy. Your reputation is secure, at least in the western world.) In addition to aids for translation from other languages, the Sharp Zaurus Electronic Dictionary also features a 3.5-inch touch-screen LCD, 1.3 megapixel camera and an SD/MMC slot. For those of you out there who don’t understand initials, this means that when you tire of looking up words, this electronic dictionary can also function as a music player, camera, e-book reader and FM radio!

The cost of the Sharp Zaurus Electronic Dictionary is 341,000 won, which if you think is a lot of money in Korean terms, translates into about $360 US dollars! Some might argue this is not too much to pay for one of the most powerful electronic dictionaries to enter the Korean market. On the other hand, still others claim that it is a lot of money, both in Korean and American currency. One can certainly imply from the facts that Koreans today must be pretty avid readers for Sharp to introduce a color screen dictionary PDA that comes equipped with all its special features, including the flexible screen which can also be found in the latest lines of Zaurus PDAs as well.

For those of you who think that I might not have noticed that I added another set of initials when you weren’t looking, I say “let them eat cake!” PDA stands for “personal digital assistant.” (It evolved from the ashes of Gal Friday and other such words that no longer apply to the jobs of the modern world.) A personal digital assistant is, in short, is a handheld device that combines computing, telephone, fax internet and networking features. PDAs are available in either a stylus or keyboard version.

The Sharp Zaurus Electronic Dictionary might not be a “must have” for everyone but one question remains:

Is it for YOU?
