A Complete Guide to Resumes

The following directory and brief descriptions include Hubs written about resumes and their purposes and uses. Several good examples are provided, taken from actual resumes that have garnered job seekers several interviews and have resulted in high-paying, long-term careers.

For the 15 years, I have served the world of work through teaching classes in resume/job application and career portfolio preparation, Internet job search, work readiness training for adults and youth, job search and placement, workplace simulations, work maturity, work hardening, workplace stress management, anti-bullying and how to hand difficult bosses, coworkers, and clients; and some other topics.

One great course was a successful 12-week training session for medical office workers, including medical terminology, receptionist training, customer service, and office tasks.

In addition, I have been pleased to provide both career and specific-job related assessments and recommendations for job seekers with good results.

One of my favorite accomplishments was facilitating placement 600 individuals in appropriate jobs from January - mid-May in the year 2000.

The Resume Directory

How to structure your first resume

This is a basic resume procedure manual in short and offers a fun look at the resume through the eyes of Larry the Leprechaun. Please enjoy!

Chronological Resumes

This is the resume that many employers expect.

Combination Resumes

This resume is excellent for those that have over 10 years of work experience, and very useful to those with 20 or more. Such a resume highlights solid skill sets and the most recent employment (which is usually more long-term, say 5-10+ years) and summarizes other work experience later in the resume.

Mini Resumes - Jist Cards

These cards are great to pass out to all of your contacts when you are serious about find good work quickly. Attach one to your resume when you mail it to potential employers as well. It's convenient for an HR reviewer to keep handy after your resume is filed on placed in a stack on a desk.

Video Resume/Digital Resume: The Hot New Job Tool

These things can be very good! I first saw a video resume before CD's and DVD's became popular. A local young many fashioned a video cartridge out of a Drive:/A type floppy disk in 1994. He was hired by a local ad agency and his story was aired on the national news.

Words To Avoid In a Resume Format

This is becoming increasingly important as industry buzzwords become trite and meaningless in today's global workplace. There are ways to highlight your talents in a fresh, meaningful way. Resume examples in links further below show some of these effective, solid ways of doing it.

Specific Examples for Showcasing Temporary Employment

Occasionally, it can be difficult to showcase temporary employment ("temp jobs") on a resume wihtout seeming to hjave jumped from job to job without cause. However, this page explains how to do it well and offers examples that have worked to secure real long-term employment.

Vital Resume Information

Resume Impossible: Food Lies!

This is a good example of what is likely to occur as the result of exaggerating or falsifying entries on a resume. This person was building fame and fortune on the Food Network and personal book sales and was forced to leave a successful television career and pursue his own business. We wish him well and the future ability to use his real qualification with the confidence that they deserve.

How to Check References

While this is a tip list for employers, it also shows job seekers some of the ways they are investigated during the application process.

As a professional writer and communicator, I have found writing my own resume or that of others is always a confusing task. I look forward to looking more deeply in to what you recommend.

I find it much easier to write for others than to write my own resume. I hope some of these Hub prove useful. They actually helped me in my writing practice for resumes as well.

I have never tried doing a video resume, I think that'd be cool, most especially if you are the one hiring, at elast you have an idea of the people applying. :P

Wonderfully written! You have provided, once again, a wealth of useful information. I have never heard of "jist cards," but it seems that their information-filled, pocket-sized handiness would promote better chances of getting hired.

Great hub! Keep up the good work!

I have used the Jist card myself a time or two with good results, so I recommend them. Really glad you liked this Hub, naturesencore!
