Young Adults in America

Following college graduation or completion of a promising vocational certificate or professional licensing program, new workers need to prepare an effective resume and decide where they want to build a long-term career.

In addition to the Top 25 Cities in America for Business and Jobs, there are also 10 major US Cities that are particularly accommodating to young professionals, including higher wages, lower cost of living, good entertainment and sports activities, and other dimensions they seek.

These professionals include new college graduates and those that have 10 or fewer years competed in their lifelong careers. They would be the group that regularly joins the Junior Chamber of Commerce in their cities. Information about this list has been compiled by Kipplinger Magazine, US News and World Reports, Forbes Magazine, AT&T, and other entities over the last several decades with the following results.

The top 10 cities on the list include large cities where successful graduates of the best American universities settle by the end of their first decade of employment. These universities are institutions that attract the highest enrollments and graduate the largest proportion of students, especially in nationally recognized programs; and place the largest numbers of new professionals successfully into the world of work.

The 10 cities, on average, pay young adults higher salaries than the rest of America pays. They are cities in which the most opportunities exist for new business ventures and expansions exist. They also are home to large numbers and proportions of young, single individuals.

Top 10 Cities for Successful Young Adults

  1. New York
  2. San Francisco
  3. Atlanta
  4. Los Angeles
  5. Washington, DC
  6. Boston
  7. Seattle
  8. Minneapolis
  9. Philadelphia
  10. Denver

An additional two good cities for high earnings and large numbers of career opportuntiites for those in the ages of 21 - 34 include:

Lexington, Kentucky

Athens, Georgia

Nashville, Tennesee

Raleigh, North Carolina -

This is *NOT* the Raleigh-Cary Metroplex [Number 1 for ALL ages in the USA] or the Raleigh-Durham Metroplex [in the Bottom 10 for all ages inclusive], but just the city of Raleigh itself, inside the city limits. The other two are Metroplexes that are official government statistical areas for jobs and business. Stick with Raleigh proper or the corridor between Raleigh and Cary!

Top 10 Careers for Young America through 2050

  1. Computer Programmers and Software Engineers (IT)
  2. Day Care Providers [Owners & Directors]
  3. Elder Care Specialists [Specialists and Owners]
  4. Employment Specialists [Staff and Owners] & HR Managers
  5. Environmental Engineers
  6. Home Health Aide Agency Owners & Directors
  7. Management Consultants / Financial Advisors
  8. Networking Specialist (IT)
  9. Physician's Assistants
  10. Social Services Coordinators

The factors that make the above list the Top 10 Careers in the 21st century are:

  • Aging and dying members of the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers.
  • Increased lifespans through improved medicine and nutrition. Peole live longer and need care for longer numbrs of years.
  • Rising Child Care and Adult Babysitting/Companion costs.
  • Advances and expansion in technologies. Infomration Technology (IT) is used widely among the Top 10.
  • Job distributon of one job among multiple worksites, "Hot desking", and telecommuting --

Hot Desking is very interesting; it's a lot like the old job sharing of the 1970s and 1980s, as portrayed in the Dolly Parton - Jane Fonda movie 9 to 5 of that era.

Desks within a corporation are shared by several individuals that use them at different times during a 24-hour period, becaase they work different shifts, telecomute for part of their day, and/or work in the field with customers for portions of each work day. They do not need a desk for a full 8-hour work shift. There is also a 21st century trend toward more flexible work hours, but with employees on call 7 days a week, and this makes a hot desk useful.

Healthcare, Social Services types of positions (especially dealing the aged and their famiies) and Information Technology jobs will provide the most job opportunities in the 21st century. Green engineering will increase continually throughout the century and provide stable business and job markets.

Dear Patty Inglish, MS

It is an encyclopedea you have summarized and organised in an article. This is an art and science both.

A well written well researched article. Worth preserving for reference.

Very big and well organized job, Patty! When I already think, that's more data than I need, you come with something even better. Thank you very much!

Big corporate world is getting less and less popular, because we mean just a number in a big corporation, which/who needs to make big profit for the company, otherwise is indifferently sacked overnight. I prefer smaller groups or even own private business.

msms - Thank you very much. My goal is to bring out the most useful and up to date infomraiton available, and enough information to cover a topic well.

Too many sites, I'm afriad, give only one or two pieces of a puzzle that are worthless, becuase the rest is missing. Then there are the repeated articles all around the web that parrot incorrect information... WHEW! LOL :)

dlhoh - thanks for visiting and reading this Hub! I hope it proves useful.

solarshingles - It's always good to hwear from you as well! Business ownership has its own headaches, but at least they'd be our own!

amy jane - Thanks for visitng! I think even among all the young adults, there is probably more opportunites in such places for all ages. More business growth, etc.

I love that New York and San Francisco are the top two because those are the two cities I'm looking at relocating to. Although I love NY, my husband does not. SF is looking good because I'm from California, and most of my family is there.

I had friends that moved to San Francisco about 7 years ago and have loved it ever since. Much success with your move! I love Seattle, never been to Oregon, but am determined to get to California one of these days.

Thank you for your positive comments, Shirley Anderson and courtsantos. Keeping track of what agencies do what research is a bit time consuming at first, but combining information and data becomes simpler with time. Hope the information helps a lot!
