Canon fans will be pleased at the announcement of a full frame EOS 5D Mark II, Canon have just released details of an update to their entry level Digital SLR - the XSi (450D).

The camera features a twelve megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0″ LCD monitor, Live View with both AF modes (contrast-detect and passive), 14-bit processing and RAW, spot metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps continuous shooting, a larger viewfinder, SD/SDHC storage and a new higher capacity battery. Other refinements include, Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System, a9-point wide-area AF system, a DIGIC III image processor and a compact, lightweight body. This is a major leap forward compared to previous upgrades. Live View is slowly making its way across the whole line, along with 14-bit RAW, and a 3.0″ LCD monitor.

This one is clearly aimed at persuading the point-and-shoot user to step up to a Digital SLR. 12.2 megapixels stuffed into such a small sensor might not give perfect results, but it’s pretty impressive at this price point. Around $800 for the body only and less than $1,000 with a couple of lenses.

The great thing about Canon, and one of the best selling points is these thing just do not wear out. Canon has long been the camera of choice amongst professional sports photographers, because even if a 300 pound line backer lands on you in the end zone while you are going for that elusive shot, at least the camera will survive.

As any regular readers know, I am a big fan of longevity, and Canon do a good job of making their stuff last. On top of that, the XSi is compatible with their EF lens lineup, which they have been making for years and will continue to do. So even of you have a disaster and wreck the camera, all the bits will fit any replacement, so you don’t need to buy all new.

Canon have perhaps one of the biggest range of lenses available. Ranging from Ultra Wide zoom and tilt shifts to super telephoto. All compatible with the entire range of EOS Digital SLR cameras, so if you do decide to upgrade, all the lenses will fit the new model. These lenses will outlive you. You can alsofeel safe buying them used - Unles a 300lb linbacker actually has landed on it, they are all but indestructible.

Canon have won more awards than any other manufacturer and if this camera is as good as the specifications appear, it’s worth waiting until April, when they are officially released.

Here's my advice:

1. Learn to write proper English

2. Don't just steal content from other sources and pass it off as your own

3. Don't leave so many links in my comment boxes

4. Write some original stuff that people might wish to read

Interesting - I'd like a new camera - but can't really justify it yet - is it only Canons that have their lenses interchangeable accross the whole range - can you use lenses from their non-digital cameras too?

Yes, they are. Canon haven't made 35mm specific lenses for some time now. The old ones will not fit and use all the new technology available, but the current range of lenses fit both.

i would wait for the 450 -it looks a better camera. These things go out of date so fast, I think the newer you can get the better.

Okay I just have to weigh in on these comments.

Comparing the 5D to the 450D is like comparing apples and oranges. The 5D is a professional grade camera with a 35.8 x 23.9 mm CMOS sensor. It's ISO ranges from 50-3200 and, up until the release of the Canon Eos 1Ds Mark III, had the lowest noise in the business. No other camera could compare with the quality of photographs at high ISO's using available light. This 450D is an upgrade from the Rebel, an amateur DSLR and while the newest technology is pretty awesome it can't compare even to a used 5D for picture quality and resolution. Even professionals who were diehard Nikon uses their whole life switched to the 5D because of its low noise and incredible features. Also the file sizes are larger which is important for printing and stock photos. In fact the 5D is the minimum camera you can use for professional stock shooting.

And no, I don't work for Canon...lol...but I do work for a photography school and am a photographer myself and we test all the newest, latest, greatest toys and compare the photographs side by side.

Of course if you're strictly a flash photographer and don't have a need for perfection in low light situations sans flash, then forking out the money for a 5D may not make sense. It really depends on your photography output as to which camera or brand to buy.

Now if the rumours are true and there's a 5D mark II in the making then I'll get excited. It will be interesting to see where they take it.

Cool Hub!

I wonder how this new Canon compares to the Nikon D60... which is coming out shortly as well.

I just started using the Nikon D200 and have found it to be a very high end consumer/low end professional camera. Easy to use the basics and quite capable of getting superb quality photos.

So a girl with dark blonde hair would be a keeper!

Anyway, my father uses a Canon. It's ancient, he has dozens of various color and effect lenses, and boy howdy do I want it from him. It still works, and I would -love- to have a Canon camera.

Are you flirting with me *blush* and yes :)

The only problem I can see - and this is why I have swapped my NIKON for a digital - is getting the fims processed will soon be a problem.

Really? Maybe you should put up a hub about the decline of film processing! If you haven't already and I missed it.. *goes to look at your hub list*

Not on my list of things to do I'm afraid. But it's on the way out the door. Silver halide processing will not last much longer - sorry to say - unless you are willing to do it yourself - Although color processing is a pain manually - B&W is fine .
