I just returned from walmart who refuses to refund the tainted alpo dog food due to the fact walmart hasnt told them to they say they know nothing about the alpo dog food being recalled. In fact I checked and they still have it on the shelves and refuse to pull it until something comes down from corp. I showed them the copy of the news release and they just kept saying until corp. tells us to pull it off the shelves we wont. I called thier corp. office and actually one of the customer service people laughed at me when I told them that if they didnt pull the tainted dog food it would be just that many more dogs sick . and they also just kept saying well we dont know about it. I said how can you not know since the public knows. I tape rrecordered the whole conversation even the part with the girl laughing about dogs dying. I probably will never shop at walmart again. I wonder how long it takes them to get tainted people food off the shlves days after it has been recalled?

I went to Walmart and they would not take back the poisoned dog food , their corporate had not given any instructions . Also there is still food on the shelfs , god knows if anyone checked the batch numbers!

I have 1 cat that is missing , I looked everywhere for her and could not find her . I don't know what happened to her . In cases like this where you have a cat that goes outside , you cant not know or proof if that food killed your cat !

I had our Muffin put down Thursday and the Vet said it was from kidney failure. She became sick about the middle of march and totally stopped eating, even tuna? I am keeping all the packagings from the foods we served her.

My dog was just diagnosed with early stage kidney failure. We caught it early. We need to tell people if they have been using any wet dog or cat food to have their pet check by the vet.

My Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel Died from a Tumor in her mouth---It got so big that our Vet suggested that we put her to sleep. We fed her Alpo and the Mighty dog. Now we have another dog (Springer Spaniel) 5 months old ,also we have a Chihuahua .What do we feed them now? The news is saying now that the treats are bad. We've given that to our dogs. My dog that died was 9 years old and a loving family member. These people that are saying that Wal-Mart won't remove the food from the shelves are right. I don't know where they live ,but I live in S.C. and its still on the shelves.DO SOMETHING TO HELP US __PLEASE !!

Has anyone tested Pedigree? or had problems or had there dog dye on them who were fed Pedigree? Please et me know, I still have the food, where would I get it tested? any info would help.

4 days of IVs and $956.00 later, my cat survived. He is 5 yrs old, an inside cat, and has always been otherwise 100% healthy. The vet says his symptoms were that of 'poisoning.' I have 2 cats. He is the only one who eats treats. I bought Special Kitty treats from WalMart and gave him 9 'hearts' over 3 days. That third day he began uncontrollable vomitting, would not drink water, and quit running around entirely. Despite me calling Menu Foods, they still do NOT have this on their caution or recall list! I'm wondering whether to join a class action lawsuit OR whether to just go to Small Claims Court in San Diego. The problem is that I cannot afford a laboratory test to prove there is poison in the treats. I still have 2/3 of them in the can.

My daschound has been receiving treats from ol'roy--expiration date july 08, I have found this is not on the recall list BUT, even before I knew there was a problem with the strips, I have had MAJOR problems with her--lethargy,having accidents with urine(she never did this before) Holly even urinated on my bed twice!!! I was afraid she had heart problems ,because she was panting so heavily. Since I have heard about the problems with ol' roy products, I immediately quit giving them to her and THANK GOD,after two weeks ,she seems to be some better---I THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE A FURTHER INVESTIGATION---AND RECALL MORE OF THE PRODUCTS!!!!!!

My cat Molly has been on Nutro complete dry food for seniors ISBN #790520617. Several weeks ago she was taken to the vet for UTI. Now she is showing tinge of blood in her urine that was noticed this morning. I am trying to contact Nuto in regard to this number. I bought another bag of Nutro Lamb & Rice regular. Now I am unsure until I speak to somebody.

My cat, Lil Wus, was eating a bag of the Select Kitty food every day. In the last couple of weeks of February I noticed her eating had slacked off and then on March 1, she stopped eating entirely. She was drinking water, and her litter box was filling up requiring me to empty it more and more frequently. She also started throwing up so I scheduled an appointment with the vet. I went to work on Friday and when I returned she was in the exact same location and appeared to be very weak. I offered her food but she turned her nose up at it and walked slowly away. All day Saturday it was the same. That night they announced the pet food recall so I went to the web site and found that 16 of the 19 bags of cat food I still had were on the recall list.

I took her to the vet on Monday and he thought that due to her not having been neutered it was probably just a urinary tract infection. After running the tests he came back visibly shaken and asked if she had eaten any of the recalled food. I asked him why and he said she was in the early stages of renal failure and that her kidneys were what he'd expect to see in a cat 13 years old or higher. She is only 3 years old. For the next week and a half she was on an IV drip and she's now eating little Friskies food but still taking medication for the infection she got from the cat food and will now have to go back weekly to be tested.

I still have all 16 pouches of the tainted food and need to know who to talk to about her vet bills as well as what to do for her. She's only 3 but has sustained kidney damage due to the company's negligence. I know that money can't get her health back and I don't have a lot of it anyway. I'm upset and just need information on what I can do ... it's not her fault she was poisoned .. it's mine for feeding her that food .... and for trusting a company that poisoned my cat!!!

My dog started drinking excessive amounts of fluids on 2/20 I took her to the vet and they ran blood tests. Her tests were o.k. but then she quit eating. She would go 4 days without any food, she weighed 14 pounds when this began, then she might eat a small amt of something and go 4 more days without nourishment. I returned her to the vet and they repeated her blood tests after we learned of the recall. Her ALT, a Liver enzyme which should be less than 100 went up to 804 then when repeated 4 days later went to 944. Her BUN was elevated at 38 then up to 45. We finally got her eating chicken, the tests were repeated on Friday her BUN (kidney test) is now back to normal, and her ALT is 560 still high but better. Problem is she quit eating again on friday, she is still lethargic and drinking tons of water and urinating alot. The company has confirmed she ate the recalled food and the batch # coincided with the recall. But I am not hearing anything about liver damage and the recall except from the FDA who said there have been others. Can anyone help with info?? has your animal had liver problems after eating this junk.?

In response to any other dog having problem with the DRY PEDIGREE DOG FOOD. We lost our beloved pom Cassie who was only 7 and otherwise healthy on February 28. The vet couldn't explain why a healthy dog would die suddenly from kidney failure. I am convinced it was the dog food!!!!!! Anyone else lose a dog to Pedigree dry , please post if you hear anything. Nothing they could do will ever bring our Cassie back though , we are so heartbroken :(

Mike, I would like the results of the exams. For any of you feeding a different food than what is on the recall list and your pet is sick or has died you MUST report it to the FDA to get them active on this!

I just returned fromm the vet after a 3 hour adventure. and $500 less. My pet bobcat, which i've had for years was just confirmed with acute renal failure. Both of the vets suggested that if no food is eated or water taken - they be put down. Have a "african jungle cat" which consumed exactl;y the same amount with hardly any signs of kidney failure. This really sux - these cats are/were my best friends. THX ALPO - we trusted you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Let's hope whereever this grain came from - that it doesn't make it into any other pet food supplies - much less any human food supplies. MY QUESTION is "why is ALPO 2 weeks behind everyone else??? I'm sure alot of people falsely trusted ALPO and switched from their previous tainted brand to the "safe" ALPO. I saw another posting from Kathryn - saying her Dog has liver problems - my Shih Tzu has the same symptoms, I took her in a week ago for a blood test and her ALT was through the roof. My Vet told me to watch her and bring her back if there were any other problems. Well she got worse, she wont eat - she is lethargic and sleeps all day, vomitting nothing up because she wont eat. I took her back into the Vet yesterday for a comprehensive blood test and I should receive the results today. I have the same fears, that Liver damage has not been mentioned much with this recall - except that it makes perfect sense. If the body is trying to fight a toxin, it would affect the Liver. Does anyone else have anything to add to this? I need to know what my next course of action is, I want my Vet bills covered - and I want my dog healthly. I am afraid this will alter her life forever.

I am trying to get info on the lawsuits being filed. Is there specific suits for specific feeds fed to specific animals?I have lost 2 cats, my mom lost her cat, I also took care of 2 kittens for a friend of mine for 1 week-end and 1 of them fell violently sick and died 3 days later.......I have one cat that was sick and fought hard and seems to have overcome the illness thouggh he is still thin. Also, sadly I feed dog and cat food canned and dry to my poultry to bring them through their winter moult and start laying again, well, I had 2 young peababies keel over and my Midnight male, usually huge and thriving has been battling to stay alive for MONTHS!! God know how many I've lost as some free range and turn up missing and I never find them.....On Christmas Eve day a ferel cat that had been eating here for a long time I believe turned on me and latched onto my arm teeth and claws for NO reason doing dreadful damage!!! He may have been sick and in pain and I was the closest thing to be annoyed at. He was captured and tested and did NOT have rabies but we can't know of other problems as he was put to death for his wickedness......How sad it is all for the sake of trying to save a couple cents per can.well, that's the condensed version of my story.Best Regards,Sally Holcomb

My sister went to WalMart when she heard about the recall. She did not know what brands were recalled at first. WalMart would not tell her or give her a list. They said she could look it up on the internet. She had lots of food products at home since she has a dog and four cats. She went home and took all the food back to WalMart. They were not happy. I am telling her to write a letter to WalMart and if any law firm wants or needs her input they can have it. None of her pets were affected; however, who knows if others died because of WalMarts refusing to supply customers with this information. Makes you wonder about the places you shop!

My cat Sam passed away on February 9th. I was distraught. I had Sam for 14-15 years. He (and his sister) were my first present to myself after graduating college and had been my companion ever since. He was extremely healthy and physically fit. He had no signs of failure until the following story.

I had given him ONE can of "special kitty" walmart food for an early "Christmas dinner" treat. He usually ate Iams weight control dry food. I took him to the vet right before Christmas because he was warbling in pain in the litter box all of a sudden. They treated him and put him on "Hills Science Diet-MD wet and dry" and antibiotics. When I brought him home, it took about a week before he started acting "normal", but never really got his full appetite back. I had to disguise his antibiotics in a treat in order for him to take the pill. I used "Friskies, Hair Ball remedy moist treats". Once the antibiotics ran out, he seemed ok and the vet told me to go ahead and let him go back to his normal diet. (the Iams).

All along through this process the vet was perplexed and said that his case didn't make sense because he had none of the normal symptoms of kidney failure, yet kept having series issues of blood in the urine, clotting, throwing up, and what he called "crystalization?" I think . He was also extremely lethargic and kept finding places to hide away, which was opposite his normal personality. I counted one hour in which Sam threw up 13 times. Still, his body weight and strength was not effected. He never showed any long-term symptoms.

I have another kitty from the same litter and she went through a spell of throwing up as well, but refused to eat the treats like Sam did. In fact, she ate 1/2 the amount he did in general.

It was only about 2 weeks of "normal" behavior from Sam, then all symptoms came back I immediately took him in to the vet once again. He stayed their for treatment for the weekend. He seemed to be getting better and the vet used "Hill's LD" that time I believe. It took him MUCH longer to eat and pee. He had to be cathed both times in order to clear his bladder. The vet said he was beginning to seem more alert and happy on Saturday. He wanted to keep him one more day for observation and I could visit him on Sunday and then pick him up on Monday. My Sam was checked on a Sunday at 4:00 according to the records and he was "fine" they said, but when I went to visit at 5:15, the girl met met me at the door in tears saying she was so sorry! He was dead.

What I want to know is what DIDN"T I give my cat that isn't a possibility here??? I am so saddened by this loss and I have another kitty here that I'm afraid to feed for fear of the same result.

I have my cat medical records and blood work (and bill!). I also have the pouch of Friskies treats and a sample of the MD diet and those purchasing records. I am a school teacher in WV....this has been an incredible financial burden with a tragic ending. Is there any advice out there for what I should do next? I've tried to call and talk to numerous companies and the FDA, but have received no response. I am convinced that my cat suffered needlessly because of this food recall. I miss him terribly.

In response to comments ( 8 ) (11) !16) ( 19) and anyone whose pet is on DRY PETIGREE. my dog holly died two days ago. she was perfectly healthy three days ago. she woke up april 2nd, breathing extemely heavy, and uncontrollable wetting, and excessive drinking. we took her to the vet. and voiced our concerns about the dog food, because we seemed to think she had all of the signs of the posioning. he told us she had a bladder infection. but he sent us home with antiboitis for her bladder and said she would be fine. then as the day progressed my dog got wrose. she was wetting more, and she wanted to go outside. she struggled to get out. it seemed to be that she was having trouble walking. when she got outside she collapsed to the ground and couldnt get back up. I called the vet and he said she was just tired. but i knew something was wrong. I knew it was the food. because once i got her back inside her breathing continued to get worse. she couldnt swallow. as the nite progressed she got worse. we deicded to bring her to the ER to maybe but her on oxygen to help her breath, but on the way there she died in my arms in the backseat of the car. I know she was posioned by the dog food. I doubt if she would die nine hrs after being diagnosed with a bladder infection.

"Pet owners are not likely to get much compensation if they individually sue pet food-maker Menu Foods over the death of a dog or cat, although they might fare better if they joined forces in a class action suit, legal experts say. "

I had a consult with a lawyer last night who is an expert in product negligence, and according to what he said, this statement is misleading.

What he said was that if you brought a small claims suit against menufoods, you would only have to pay a minimal fee, based on what you are awarded. Unfortunately U.S. law sees pets as nothing more than property, so the only thing you stand to gain financially is the cost of vet bills and the cost of your pet - if you can proove you paid for your pet.

A lot of pet owners aren't even considering the financial angle in a suit with menufoods, but its worth mentioning. With a small claims suit, costs will be minimal, from 10-75 dollars and you may be awarded a few hundred dollars. (The most you can be awarded in small claims court is somewhere around 2 thousand dollars, otherwise its not small claims court anymore and its much more complicated and costly.)

If you try to hire a lawyer, you could spend around 2,000 in initial fees and then pay around 225-300 dollars an hour for your lawyer's time on top of that. and then stand to gain only a couple hundred dollars.

If you join a class action suit, you share the financial award with all the other members, and your share could be like 5-10 dollars. Of course, you have no fees, and you are still giving the company hell, but without the 2-3 thousand dollars of your own expenses going to your lawyer.

The lawyer also said that the most that will happen with menufoods is that they will be proven "negligent". Which means no punitive actions. In order to get the millions of dollars in damage fees that you hear about on the news, a company has to be proven "reckless", rather than merely "negligent". "Reckless" means that the company knew what they were doing was wrong and did it on purpose. "Negligent" means they knew it was wrong, but either didn't know it was happening or let it happen out of laziness.

So, the quoted statement above is true, but you have to have the same definition of "compensation". If compensation means money to you, then this statement is false. If it means menufoods will be made to sweat beads, with less out-of-pocket-cost to you, then its true.

hi all just giving you an update on jasper sent him back to the vets yesterday for follow up visit. as i stated before on febuary 23 2007 i rushed my baby to the vets his bun count at that time was 187 normal range is 15-34. vet gave him 72 hours to live. i took him home and treated him y for feeding homemade foods and giving him water in a eyedropper went out and bought him water purifier for pets.i am happy to report that jasper is doing much better know. his reading are still high his bun is at 51. he does have bad damage done to his right kidney it is smaller than the other. he will need to be watched very closely by his vet and they told me for the next 3 months will need to have kidney readings done monthly. then the can be done quarterly. this is going to cost alot of money if he needs monthly visits and treatments. i am so sorry for all you pet owners who have lost your precious babies. and i will pray for the ones that are sick.

Update on Bella, She has again quit eating at all, I'm affraid I may have to let her go. On Friday her blood tests were improving, but she is acting worse. I have to force food at this point. I have filed a class action suit in Los Angeles that will be filed tomorrow. This company needs to know she is my family, my baby, not just another number. Hopefully the judges will love pets and understand our pets are more then property. They are our children our babies, our companions and in some cases our ability with service animals. When does the nightmare end? I pray for my baby and yours as well.

Our very valuable, pedigreed hunting dog Roxy was more than just a hunting dog, she was over 10 years old, we had her since she was 4 weeks old. We fed her mostly dry dog food, but would give her 'treats' of canned dog food every once in a while. We bought 2 cans of Meijer canned food on the 12th or 13th of March and gave them to her within a couple of days. Friday she was acting wierd and only wanted more and more water, even licking moisture on trees when she was outside. By Saturday she was having ceizures and wouldn't eat. We gave her more canned dog food thinking she would eat it better than her normal dry. She ate it after a while and she got even worse. By the time we could get her to the vet she had had at least 10 ceizures and wouldn't eat anything. It was Monday 3-19 when we learned about the recall. If they had recalled food and made it well known we might not have lost her. The vet did the blood test skeptical because he hadn't heard of any pet having ceizures from it but the test showed liver failure, kidney failure and heart problems. He said she had also had one or many strokes, which had caused brain damage. ROXY SUFFERED COMPLETE MEMORY FAILURE, SHE DIDN'T KNOW HER NAME, SHE DIDN'T EVEN BARK THE SAME, SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SHE LIKED TO BE PETTED. EVEN AT 4 WEEKS OLD SHE WOULD POINT BIRDS, SHE DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT THEM AFTER THIS. After a week she got even worse and went unconsious and died 5 minutes from the vet in the back seat of my truck with my daughter. I walk into our house and still look for her and have to stop myself from calling her she was such a part of our lives. I don't have the 'proof' of the actual cans, why would someone keep empty cans and I am trying to get copies of reciepts. But I don't need what they are calling proof to know they killed my dog and I am heartbroken and extremely angry over it.

My greatest concern through all of this mess is that last year my vet suggested I place our 4 year old Cocker Spaniel on nutro products canned food since she straight up refuses to eat dry on a regular basis. So off we went to a pet store and started spending twenty five dollars a week on this supposed to be the good dog food for our dog. Then six months later this recall came into the picture. Now here is the biggest question of all HOW CAN ANY OF US PROVE WE HAVE BEEN FEEDING OUR DOG THIS, DO I DRAG THE CASHIER FROM THE PET STORE TO MENU FOODS TO VERIFY I WAS THERE EVERY WEEK BUYING THIS FOOD BECAUSE NORMAL EVERYDAY CITIZENS DO NOT SAVE 15 EMPTY CANS A WEEK JUST IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG. All we have proof from our checking account that every week we did make a purchase with our card at their store but no actual receipt naming the products we bought because there again do I need to save receipts for years just in case a recall may happens. Our baby girl is doing fine now since we decided that we would make her ground chicken and ground turkey and rice at home but we had a few days that we were scared to death we would lose her. It really upsets us that such a high quality dog food that is recommended by Vets. (because they are lead to believe this food is great) has been tainted forever in our minds. I will probably never trust any dog food again from any store

I have one dog and two cats. I have fed my cats special kitty pouches on and off for a couple of months but they do not seem to be affected. I give my dog performatrim which is a canadian based company and canadian made and packaged and she seemed to be fine until last night. Last night she had what we don't know is some kind of seizure. She couldn't walk and was shaking and panting for about 5 minutes, more so than I have ever seen her pant and skake before and she does that everytime she hears firecrackers or thunder. Her legs were like jello, she could not walk, just fall. Does someone know what this could mean. I do give her the beggin strips every morning with her breakfast.

Our cockapoo was 12 years old. Ginger was diagnosed with a congestive heart problem when she was only 3. Due to her condition we had to find a dog food that was salt free. Nutro Nature Choice was that food. With her daily medication and regular visits to her vet, Ginger was a very happy and playful dog. Several weeks ago, she suddenly didn't want to eat her dinner. I thought she may eat during the night as my son and daughter-in-law were visiting and she liked playing with them. In the morning I found that she hadn't touched her dinner so I cleaned out her dish and scooped out her daily heaping spoonful of food to give her the morning medication. She looked at it and looked at me and walked away. We knew this was very strange behavior for her because she always had a good appetite. Thinking there might be something wrong with her food, we took it back to Petco and exchanged it for another flavor. By then she was very lathargic and drinking huge amounts of water. We knew something was defininately wrong with her. We immediately called her vet and got her in right then. He saw nothing abnormal upon an exam, but thought it wise to do a blood test. The results of that test was frightening.

Both her liver and pancreas were severly enflamed. There was also some kidney involvement. Ginger stayed in the hospital for 4 days on IV's and antibiotics. The doctor thought she had a bad infection. She was taken to the vet on Tuesday. We picked her up on Friday. Her blood test showed some improvement and we were given instuctions as how and what to feed her. She ate nothing that entire weekend. We returned her to the vet on Monday. On Friday, her doctor said her blood work showed little improvement but he couldn't get her to eat anything and he knew she was unhappy there. We took her home. She continued to decline. We had to make that horrible decision on Monday. A week and a half later, the news of the pet food recall hit the air waves. We knew this is what caused the death of our beloved pet. Someone must be accountable for this tragedy.

I had just gotten a kitten at 8 weeks old and had been feeding her Special Kitty dry and Special Kiity Pouch food mixed. She was doing fine when I got her. I had to wait till she got 5 pounds or 4 months old to get he spayed. well, she got sick and I had to take her to the vet. This happened just over night. I had ran out of special kitty pouch so I had gave her a can of 9-lives with her dry food. When I left home at 7:00 a.m. she was still laying in bed. When I came back at 2;00 P.M. she was still in the same spot. I knew something was wrong. I cleaned up some vomit when I got up, I had a weird feeling then. It ended up costing me over $200 just for blood test, antibiotics, leaukmia test, and ear mite treatment. I was going to take her in to get all of her shots and spayed when she got four months old. I ended up with a freaked out sick kitten, and a $200 vet bill which was totally unnecesary. One more month she could've got the full treatment for that much. I'm a full-time student and didn't see this coming. Now, I'm going to have to pay that again. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY BABY SICK AND ME BROKE!!!!! This doesn't even account for all the food I had to replace, not to mention how much nore I had to pay for replacing her toys and kityy litter. Not Cheap.

My 1-1/2 year old dog, Kirby, died of kidney failure on February 19, 2007. This came on suddenly and my vet suspected he was poisoned, but I argued that there was no way of him possibly being poisoned. Almost one month after his death the recalls were being announced. Kirby was never fed the wet food, I always fed him IAMS dried dog food. After spending $2,000.00 to save his life and still anguishing over his death, I am still concerned by the cause. Has anyone had their dog become ill or die because of IAMS dried dog food? I now make my own dog food. I can no longer place the the well being of my companions into the hands of the dog food manufacturers.

My Father and his dog share our home. The dog was more mine because I'm the one that fed him, (he would finish the cat food the cat didn't eat), & took him for walks. Suddenly, in late January, he started having "accidents" in the house. Within a few days, he was severely lethargic & constantly dehydrated. I took him to the vet & they did a blood test, I was told he was severely diabetic, they didn't test for kidney failure because there was no recall at that time....this is a matter of 2 weeks...from a perfectly healthy & active dog, to a diabetic dog that couldn't even walk, in that amount of time. This was long before any pet food recall was ever mentioned. With days of his diagnosis, he had lost so much weight & was vomiting, dehydrated and could barely walk, we made the decision to have him put down because he was obviously suffering terribly......we lost him February 9th, I was so distraught that my husband & Father had to take him, now we know what really happened. I'm heartbroken knowing it could have been prevented, for him & all the other pets affected & their owners.

In late February, we noticed our dog Kato drinking an excessive amount of water which was very unusual for him. He never drank much, just a few laps at a time. He was constantly in and out of the house having to go to the bathroom. He also was not eating. We've been feeding him Ol Roy pouches for years which became his favorite food. He was a very fussy eater from the time he was a puppy and we were very happy that we had finally found a dog food he enjoyed. We were about ready to call our Vet to get him checked since we were concerned about his change in habits with drinking and eating when we heard about the dog food recall. We were shocked to find out that we had been feeding him tainted food. I immediately called the Vet and we took him the next day. A blood test and urine test showed he had early stages of kidney failure. As with other pet owners, we were not only very sad for our dog but very angry that it took so long for this recall to take place. Although he is 14 years old, other than a slight hearing loss, he has always been very active and healthy for his age.

We now have to give him intravenous fluids twice a week at home. Today, we took him to the Vet for his 3rd visit and his urine test showed blood in his urine. Now I'm reading about liver problems. We now have to buy special dog food from the Vet for him - at a cost $1.70 per can. Who is going to pay all these expenses for all of us that are trying to cope with this mess. No law suit will compensate all the pet owners that have either lost their pet or are incurring constant Vet bills. We all love our pets who become members of our family.

I appreciate having this space to give my comments on our dog and read all the other sad stories from pet owners.

In January 2007, my little 3 pound 3 year old chihuahua "Tiki" became critically ill and was admitted to the NC State Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She spent 6 days in ICU and was admitted initially with an elevated liver enzyme-ALT. She endured many unnecessary tests checking for a Porto-Systemic Shunt. While she was there she was diagnosed with Fanconi's Syndrome-an irreversible kidney disease. It is caused by poisoning. She would surely have died if we had not taken her to the hospital. Her liver problems have seemed to have resolved but she will be on medication the rest of her life due to her kidney damage. She ate O'Roy and Natural Choice dog food, both of which are on the re-call list. I suggest if your dog has been poisoned and displaying symptoms, you have them checked for Fanconi's syndrome. It is not curable but is treatable by replacing the elements lost in the urine (Potassium and sodium bicarbonate mostly). My total vet and hospital bills are in excess of $5000.00 and she will never be the same.

We put our beloved cocker spaniel Maggie to sleep Fri, Mar. 30. She had been treated for a kidney infection before the pet food recall, but a few days after theinfection was declared to be cleared up by our vet she started drinking water excessively and urinating frequently again. When Menu Foods had their recall, we thought nothing of it because we were feeding Maggie what we thought was safe-Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy. I have just learned of the recall and checking over cans of food left in our cupboard we have cans that match the recalled product codes. This is devastating.

I am still heartbroken over the loss of my 16 year old Lhasa Apso,Buffy, who I had euthanized on March 25. She at Old Roy pouches for 2 months. Prior to the recall, I took her to the vet, who said she was in renal failure. The vet also felt a "knot",which turned out to be a very enlarged spleen. The vet's office acted like I was crazy when I dared to question the fact that it could have been from the tainted dog food. I swear, I am wondering if the vets are scared to go out on a limb and diagnose this, despite the many thousands of dollars I have spent over the last 16 years. I guess that's beside the point now! I took her for a 2nd opinion and that vet removed the spleen. But it was too late- she died three days later.

I am mad and heartbroken and have a puppy who is eating Pedigree puppy dry food b/c it's not on the recall list. Now I don't know what to give her! Any suggestions???? Thanks and to all who have lost your pet, I too feel your pain and heartbreak.

My cat has been eating nothing but dry Iams cat food and he has been vomiting or not eating for at least a month. I had blood tests and X - rays taken and the vet seemed to think he was not eating because of the thyroid medication he has been on for several years. She prescribed appetite stimulants and he continued to throw up. I suspected it may be the cat food and pulled him off of it completely. I have been feeding him organic food and he has not vomited since! Thankfully, he seems to be getting healthier every day. IAMS DRY CAT FOOD IS STILL ON THE SHELVES BUT I THINK IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. I URGE EVERY PET OWNER TO STOP USING IT!

Why isnt something being done? How many more families have to be hurt, the companys responsible should have to come and comfort the kids and see the pain in there eyes and the pain in our pets eyes. That was the hardest thing I had to do was bury my beloved Neko today when he was so healthy it just dont seem fair that it came so fast and I have been watching the recall daily thinking that my dogs where safe! Is any of the food for them safe?

I must say, I am so shocked and outraged at this. It makes me so angry that these companies that are profiting from killing are beloved family members. My Welsh Corgi, Princess, died four weeks ago. She was such a blessing to my life, all I can think is that these companies are greedy. They only care about making money. I have 2 new dogs and just discovered the pet food, I thought was safe, is not. Thank you for this message board. My deepest sympathy goes out to those of us who have suffered the loss or losses of our pets. We need to do something. Reading everyone elses comments there is one thing that keeps going through my mind, Walmart sure does come up a lot in this horrific tragedy, whether it is cat food or dog food or treats. This should not be happening. They have put more small business owners out of business, they don't take care of their own employees and now they have a lot of their house brands that are killing our pets for the sake of a dollar.

The more that I learn, the more shocked I am about the what is actually in store bought dog food. I will be preparing meals for my dogs now and not buying store dog food or treats. It is shocking! I am outraged and I want to do something about it!!!! We all need to do something about it!!!!

I am suppose to be getting information on a compensation from the dog food company, however I think I want to join the class action law suit. If anyone has any legal information for the state of Texas please post it. This kind of thing is all new to me and I am not sure who to contact and what to do. Thank you.

It must have been Fancy Feast... he'd not been getting any other sort of wet food.

Are there any class action lawsuits forming against Purina? I would love to join.

What are the warning signs for this horriffic epidemic? Can we test our pets before the warning signs? I got my puppy when he was just 5 and a half weeks old and he's been eating Nutro Lamb and Rice Formula since then, he is now 5 months old. I don't want him to get sick so I took away all wet food and he's strictly eating dry foods now. But which of those are safe??? Please help. Thank You.

Elizabeth, try organic foods. Those that don't contain any bi-products or fillers ( dry only ) It's scary we keep buying new food and it's recalled shortly after. Watch your treats as well as they are now also being recalled.

My cat passed away on Nov27th, 2006. I know the recall says for food from Dec 3rd, 2006 but my cat was a very healthy cat. He was only 3 years old. He seemed perfectly fine. One night before he passed away, he threw up and I noticed some foam from his mouth. I just assumed that it was a hairball. Then I saw him just sitting quitely in the study. Usually he comes in bed with us, but he didnot that nite.

The next day, was very busy for me. I didnot see my cat the whole day and when I finally went looking for him at 11pm, I found him dead in my closet. We took him to the vet. The vet said there are no signs or trauma or anything else he sees wrong. We didnot order an autopsy because that would mean another $500 and we didnot know abt the recall food at that time. He had been eating the nutro natureal choice dry and wet food everyday. I am wondering if the recall needs to be before Dec3rd.

Also, I have another cat who is the same age and had been eating the nutro food till the recall. Planning to get her checked. Wondering who to contact for the bills. Any ideas?

Thanks.

My Siamese cat, Bear, age 10, was eating the Hill's Prescription Diet m/d dry food that was recalled. On Sunday he started vomiting and has been lethargic since then. Blood tests show that he has elevated ALT, suggesting liver problems. The vet refused to attribute his liver damage to the food recall -- they keep saying only kidney failure. I just wanted to add my comments to the others here about liver problems, which no one else will confirm. I hope Bear recovers soon. My heart goes out to all the other pets and owners who are suffering.

My cat WHITEY FORD A YANKEE BASEBALL PLAYER, who lives in Southern New Jersey, had to be rushed to the vet hospital an hour away at 11:00 at night in March. He was a healthy 2yr old cat who began acting crazy around 9:00. He is an indoor cat who uses his box. He was running around “like a chicken without a head” and then started squatting in different places. I was yelling and checked one spot (my pocketbook) and notice a red-yellow liquid. I then found numerous amounts of blood on my comforter, that he does not have access during the day. I put him in his carriage and started to call vets, and then realize that I had to travel, because he was covered in blood very quickly. Whitey’s urine was full of blood and he would not have survived the night. My car was full of sprayed blood.

The first question that the vet asked me was if I had types of rodent or some kind of poisons that my cat could have access to. “No, he has no access, nor do I have such items.” He then proceeded to tell me such things could happen if a litter box is not clean. He actually mad me feel that it was my fault as to why my cat was hurting. I do thoroughly clean Whitey’s box! This visit cost around $150 plus gas and time off work for the next morning. This included x-rays that resulted in a fact that he did not have crystals that block urinary flows, they emptied his urine. Thank God my cat lived! His advice was to contact my vet within a week.

I took WHITEY to the vet within the next three days due to continuing bleeding. Whitey’s urine was still full of blood. They put a “CATHETERIZING” in him for 24 hours. The vet said that he has a growth that blocked his urine pathway, (my words). The vet ignored my question about weather or not it was a cyst-he just said “a blockage growth”.

I took him home for 2 days and still the same symptoms. THEY GAVE HIM A “CATH” ALSO AND SAID IT WAS NOT WORKING. I decided that Whitey must have a major surgery. I had to nip the situation in the bud in order to cause my Whitey less pain in the future. URETHRAL OBSTRUCTION and "FLUTD" IN A CAT—double neutering.Whitey is still in recovery and alive. Now, Whitey ate my dog’s leftovers, which was Old Roy. Whitey ate Special Kitty dry food and treats. I have also researched many aspects of his surgery. This happens to male neutered cats and dogs, but older cats such as nine. In my opinion, I believe that Whitey Ford was infected, but lucky. This was a sudden burst of illness. I will say not to ask advice about the re-calls to your vet due to their desires to stay neutral, professional, and basically out of a lawsuit. I had a wonderful, sweet 12 year old Border Collie mix named Shadow who I had to have put to sleep Friday, April 6th. I had my best friend on Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy that I would sometimes put over some Ol'Roy patte canned food. I thought that I was doing good by him because as he got older the dry food became harder for him to eat. He seemed to be very happy for the last couple of years. Then all of the sudden, it was about 2-3 days before I learned that Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy had been added to the recall list, he began to refuse his food and increase his water intake. I hoped that he just had picked up a virus. After a couple of days, I tried frying up some hamburger and he ate a little of that and then would not take anymore. He became lathargic, would start vomiting and suffering with diarrhea. He lost so much weight, so rapidly. I took him to the vet , who after his initial exam feared kidney failure, and had blood work done to see what was going on with my baby. The next day, April 6th, I got the news I had been dreading. My baby's kidneys were too far gone to save him and I had to make the decision to have him put down. I do not wish this on anyone, I had to go home and face my baby knowing that the food that I had given him in good faith had sentenced him to death. I have two cats and two parrots still living and I am fearful about what to give them, I cannot watch any of my baby's suffer like that again. I have my parrots on Harrison's, which has a lot of organic ingredients and I have begun to switch my cats, who are on Nutro Gourmet Classics Hairball Formula, to Natural Ultramix Indoor Formula. I hope I am doing right by them and I pray that those responsible will be held accountable for their negligence. My prayers are with all the other families that have experienced a loss of their dear ones as a result of these food contaminations.

Hi back on Oct 27, 2006 I rushed Tasha my Boxer to the vet's for symtoms of frequent urination, vomiting, lethargy and other problems. The vet immediately did blood work and a urine test. When they came back they told me that Tasha was in complete renal failure. I was devistated to hear this since she has always been healthy. They told me there was nothing they could do for her at their vets. They wanted to know how quick I could get her to the emergency medical center in Ithaca, I told them I could leave now. I drove Tasha almost an hour away to see a Vet that then told me her chances of survival were low. I called my husband to see if we should euthanize her or give the vet a chance to save her but the outcome they didn't know either. My husband asked how I felt and I told him so he said whatever it takes do it to save Tasha. The vet then took Tasha in for an ultra sound which revealed that it wasn't a medical condition it was some sort of poison that had caused this to happen to Tasha. They told me to say goodbye to her that they were going to admit her and put her on an IV and start treating her immediately for this. All I could do is cry over and over this was very tramatic to my whole family. The vet told me that in a week they would either send her home to live or to die they were not sure at this point either way she would come home. Just for her stay for 3 days was up to $2,500.00 in fees but she was worth every penny. Tasha ended up staying there for a week and then finally came home at my request to treat her at home. During Tasha's stay I continued to feed her Mighty Dog pouch packets and Alpo sliced gravy can to help her eat because she was refusing everything they and I gave her. Tasha seemed to eat the Mighty Dog pouch food though and didn't get better her blood levels were still bad. We were just happy to have her eating food. Tasha was on medications around the clock all through the night too. It is months later and Tasha still is on medications and will be for the rest of her life and on special food for kidney failure. This has been the worst time in my life but she did live and I am thankful for this. So no matter how long ago your pet was sick people still need to know so they can track down when this started. I still have to take her to the vets every couple of months for more blood work to hear the same thing contiue her medications so she will live. Up until a week ago I was still feeding her the can food and pouch foods and she now is making a turn around in her life. Please add to this log no matter how long ago it was if your dog ate this food. I wish the people who did this were made to eat the food like our animals had too. I still have the foods in my possession that I was feeding her.

I also had to put my cat Bootsie to sleep due to kidney failure. I was feeding her the Little Kitty pouches, that was her favorite cat food.

About a month ago, less than a week before the pet food recall hit the news, we took our 10 year old pit bull mix to the vet. He had suddenly gone blind and we got an appointment the next day. By the time we got him in to the vet's, he was passing blood out of his rectum, and had bloody colored gums and tongue. The vet said he was hemorrhaging behind the eyes and was in acute renal failure. He asked if our dog had gotten into any rat poison, which of course he hadn't. The vet told us that he doubted if we would be able to save him, but put him on an antibodic that I had to inject him with once a day. Our dog stopped eating all together, but would drink profuse amounts of water. He became almost comotose in a matter of hours, having mini and grand mal seizures, couldn't control his bladder, we had to carry him in and out of the house (he weighed 75 lbs) and would have to help him stand while he tried to empty his bladder. He was literally dying before our eyes. We decided to take drastic action and was willing to try anything to save his life. A neighbor brought us a herbal de-toxifier that we gave him with an eye dropper, we squirted gator-aid down him with a syringe (later switched to Pedi-light for babies), fed him beef broth with the syringe, and soft scrambled eggs mixed in the broth that was thin enough to go through the syringe. His care was a 24/7 cause for us...my husband and I having to switch off on his care when one had to go to work. We fed him and gave him the Pedi-light every hour or so.

Ten days later he was standing on his own, but walked like a drunken sailor. Weak and unable to sit or stand for any period of time. Totally blind. We returned to the vet where his blood tests showed some improvement, but still not good. Another 10 days of an oral antibodic, doing what we could to help his appetite return...we fed him shredded deer meat in broth. Mostly broth in the beginning, adding finely shredded meat a little at a time. For a long while he would only eat on his own if I hand fed him, but three weeks into the treatment, be started eating on his own. He won't eat dry dog food, and I don't dare feed him any canned dog food or dog treats! (We were feeding him Pedigree dry dog food, Ol' Roy Meat cuts in gravey canned dog food for special treats, and Ol' Roy meat flavored dog biscuits every night). Our vet told us to feed him lots of high quality protein until he goes to eating normally, and then he will put him on a special dog food for dog's who have had renial failure.

I don't know of anyone else whose pets have hemmoraged, or have lost their vision from the recalled pet food. Our vet isn't sure that the pet food is what caused out dog's problems. But, I thought you might like to know what we did in the way of treatment that saved our pet's life hoping it might benefit some who are just now dealing with this problem.

Our dog is nearly back to 100% of his old self with the exception of his blindness which the vet thinks will be a permanent loss.

Just yesterday had to put down our 10 year old Lasa Apso, Lily.  She has been on Hill's prescription W/D diet for 3 years.  Has anyone had problems with that dog food??  It is not on the recalled list, but Lily experienced the same symptoms & I believe her dog food was to blame.  She lost 5 pounds lately, stopped eating her food & drank excessively.  The Vet claimed she had liver cancer & kidney failure.  Please respond if this dog food has been a problem for your dog.

Something needs to be done about this situation. Just today I went into walmart , they still have the recalled dog food on the shelves. They assured me that what they are selling is safe......needless to say I left without buying any dog food. I lost my 16 year old shih tzu a few weeks ago due to alpo. He always had a hefty appetite, a can of alpo a day along with his bowl of dry food and his treats. Alpo had been his pick for 16 years. He suddenly refused to eat, drank large amounts of water and became lethargic. Even at 16 years old, he was still very active. We were moving into a new house so the first few days, I figured he had some anxiety. After 4 or 5 days of him not eating I took him to the vet. At that time alpo was not on the recall list but he vet did ask if he was eating anything that was recalled. We came home with antibiotics and vitamins to be taken orally. I made hamburger thinking thats how I would get the pills down him. He took a couple of bites and that was it. I could see he was getting weaker and weaker. On Saturday, we went back to the vet...still no alpo on recall, so we were thinking a serious case of anxiety. We came home then with shots, twice a day for 3 days. He was to go back to the vet on Tuesday for an ultrasound and blood work. Late saturday he got much worse, there is no animal hospital even close to where we live, so I stayed up with him, checking him every little bit to see if he was any better. I dozed off for a little while and when I woke up....he had died curled up next to me. The alpo recall came the very next day. I have 2 young shih tzus also but thank god they had not ate any of the alpo that was tainted. I was a 16 year alpo buyer but I will never buy it again. I now buy kibbles and bits and check the recall list daily. Its traumatic to lose a loyal companion thats been around for 16 years. If anybody has any info on how to join the class action suit...please email me bsgullion@yahoo.com

My English Bulldog of 3 years died suddenly on March 25, 2007. I had heard about the recall on the ol'roy canned food and stopped feeding my 3 dogs 2 weeks before he passed away. My other 2 dogs have been tested and have increased BUN/Creat levels in Kidneys and there urine has been sent for cultures. I started using Alpo because I called the number on the can and they stated this canned food was fine for dogs. I called the FDA after Harley died on 3/25/07 and reported my pet food products. On 3/30/07 the Alpo I was using was said to have been contaminated. My 2 girls grew up with Harley from 1 and 3 years old to 4 and 6 years old. We miss him very much. I hope my other two small dogs make it with their kidney problems.

My dog has been eating mighty dog food for years. He has never been sick a day in his life. A month ago (right after the recall), he began drinking alot of water and having acccidents in the house, even in his sleep. Hearing of the recall I took him to the vet immediately where I was told he was in kidney failure (high Bun and creatine readings- also small traces of blood). We put him on a low protein diet and went back for more blood work 10 days later to see if the diet was helping. This time not only did the blood work come out with Kidney failure, but now he also has liver failure. Another week later more blood work and the liver readings are becoming even higher. He is currently being treated with low protein diet (which he hates) and liver pills. We have also ruled out all diseases (at least that the vet can think of to test for). I am being told that since he didn't show crystals in the urine that this isn't from the food and that there aren't any liver problems being reported along with kidney failure. I've been searching the internet and see a few people out there have pets showing the same or similary syptoms. Also the ASPCA web site is still advising they don't have a definate cause for the food tainting. My questions to anyone out there who's pet is going through this, did you urine alaysis show crystals and is anyone's pet also experiencing liver difficutlty along with the kidney failure. Best of luck to all the pet owners out there and my deepest sympathy to anyone who's lost a pet or going through this.

My mom just had to put down my 9 yr old cat today. She had eaten the recalled pounce treats and started having liver issues. My mom tried medications to fight it but it ended up getting worse and she went into kidney failure. So she had to put her down today :( Kicker is my parents just lost their dog suddenly too. Right around the time they first announced the pet food recalls. Her food wasn't on the list, but my mom says she suspects she snuck some of the cat treats since she was known to do that at times. =/ She was perfectly healthy one minute and gone the next. Then a few weeks later they have to put our cat to sleep too :(

My 10-yr. old cat, Tippy, collapsed on Friday, March 9, and I rushed her to the vet. The vet informed me the next morning that Tippy's kidneys were failing. I now have to administer sub-Q fluids every two days at home and feed her a prescription food. Fortunately, she is recuperating, I have pet insurance, and I hope this never happens again to anyone's pet. I cringe every time I open a can of the prescription food and wonder what is in that food as well. My heart goes out to anyone who has lost a pet, or is nursing one, due to this inexplicable event!

I lost my Molly, Monday to Ol Roy pet treats. Molly was a very healthy 15 year old Peke. I am so sick over this, she went into kidney failure and passed away. We have two other dogs one that had an accident, he NEVER has accidents so now we are very very worried. Our pet bills are over $2000. and we are not done yet. I loved Molly and she deserved better then this.

Why is Pedigree Dry Dog Food still on the market? It contains the Wheat Gluten that is poisoning our animals. I lost a cat on January 31. I was feeding her different kinds of pouch and can foods because she wasn't eating well and was losing weight. She went into renal failure. I was feeding her these poisoned foods totally unaware.

I was feeding my dog Goldie Alpo Prime Cuts which was not recallled till the end of March and now she is having Kidney failer and as of April 21st her Liver values have gone up. She has spent 2 1/2 days in the hospital having her Kidneys flushed and she is sick again. Now I will have to start doing Sub Q liquids at home for who knows how long. I want to know what took so long for Purina to recall this food. I feel if this was recalled from the beginning she would not be sick right now. As of Friday I have filed the first Class Action Law Suit against Purina in the state of Illinois which will be posted on Monday March 21st. My Vets bills are up to over 800 dollars and climbing. Purina is not returning my calls despite numerus attempts to contact them. Despite what Purina is claiming on there website saying they are very concerned and doing whatever is possible to help anyone with a sick pet they are avoiding contacting anyone with a complaint. Purina needs to step up and take responsibility.

My dog Chloe died on March 9. She ate Alpo Prime cuts every day. She became lethargic and stopped eating and drinking on March 8. She was vomiting the day before she stopped eating. She became extremely dehydrated and had to be put down to end her suffering.

I lost my best bud a few weeks ago and I am just starting to get over the total revenge feelings. Actually now I'm starting to feel more like "Why bother?" The government doesn't give a s###, the companies who make the food don't give a s###. And boy BIG surprise Walmart doesn't give a s###!

Is anyone else starting to see a pattern here? No body but those of us who lost a loved one cares. Big business only cares about lost profits. And this administration, well, we won't get into that because that would be a 50 page rant all by itself. The short rant!

Pet lovers, we have to band together and force feed these mercenary companies the fact that we the care givers , will not stand for another fiasco like this. WE have to make a stand, NOW! Start making your own food for your pets. STOP buying this crap they sell! You would not eat food you were suspicious about, why the hell would you feed it to your best friend and pal?

The government won't protect our friends so we have to. Hell they can't even protect us from vegetables soaked in feces! Will it be hard? Not really. There are plenty of sites that have good recipes for nutricious foods. Check out the links on this site to start.

I just read where pigs have been contaminated by the same crap! They are saying only a few hundred pigs right now but you betcha I think the government is lying about it. Of course none of the animals as yet are in the human food chain! Right! WMD'S, remember?

I lost my special friend Jeebers 1 week ago. She had stopped eating and drinking all together. She began vomitting and would not even go to the bathroom. She was 19 years old and has been with me since 1988! The vet told me she was having Kidney failure and that my only option was to put her to sleep. I know it was the food that did her in. She was full of life up to two weeks ago. She would follow me everywhere and was always curious about the world around her. She always greeted me with a smile and spent every night on my pillow. Things will never be the same and she deserved a much more dignified death. My heart is completely broken. The worst part is knowing that I gave her the poisoned food. I will never be able to take back her suffering and that kills me inside.

hello i have been posting here since this recall came out my kitten jasper almost lost his life due to the pet food recall. i am having a hard time choosing a class action suit to join. am i suppose to pick one close to me or does it matter. speaking of something funny as i am sitting here typing this out i haven't heard from menu foods in over three weeks and low and behold as i am typing they just called me. they are sending me out a package of infomation to and paper work to fill out. there number 1 question was if i still had the food. yes i do but they are not getting it i would rather enter a class action suit and give it to the lawyers helping out us pet owners. if anybody can suggest a suit please let me know. i have never joined a class action suit before and dont know what to do to sign up for one.
