Colleges that Offer Online Classes and Degrees
73Distance Learning
Distance learning is a somewhat new program that has been introduced into many colleges across the board.
Basically, the premise of the program is to allow students to take online classes and to even complete a degree program solely online.
Distance learning programs are great for the working parent or individual who wants to get a degree, finish a degree program, or further his education, on his own time.
No going to classes or walking through a campus. For the most part, it's solely online.
There are cases, such as in math finals, to which professors may request a proctored exam, in which you will have to find a colleague or coworker to administer an exam that the professor has emailed to them. But, otherwise there is very little student- teacher, or student- student interactions.
Finding a College that Offers Distance Learning
Because distance learning is a growing popularity among people of all ages, more and more colleges are setting up online programs to suit the ever growing needs of the population.
There are a few things that you want to consider when looking for a college that offers distance learning.
- The reputation of the school.
- Find out about the professors.
- The satisfaction rate of the school.
- Cost of tuition.
- Length of the program.
You will, also, want to decide if you want a hybrid distance learning program, in which you can have some online classes or some on campus classes. Not all colleges offer this, but it can be a benefit for classes that you know you will have trouble teaching yourself, such as more advanced mathematics.
If you decide that a hybrid distance learning program is best for you, you will want to find a college that has facilities near you. You wouldn't want to choose a college in Arizona, if you're in Georgia.
Most distance learning programs are 100% online, whereas some require some live interaction. In this case, you will have to take into account distance of the nearest college facility.
If you already have college credits, you will want to find a college that will allow you to transfer your current college credits.
Reputable Online Colleges
You may be worried that an online college may be a little iffy in the long run. Well, some programs may be rip offs, but if you find the right online distance learning program, you'll have your degree in no time, and it will be legit.
Although, there are many colleges that offer online distance learning programs, I've just listed a few that I've either considered, enrolled, or heard good reviews of.
The online program offered by the University of Phoenix is probably one of the more famous online college programs. They offer various Bachelor's degree programs, Associates, Master's, Doctorals, and Certifications. You can take individual classes, or sign up for a full degree program.
Although, a fairly new distance learning program more geared towards the military, Troy University's online degrees are just as challenging as an on- campus degree program that can be undertaken by any civilian or military personal. There's no if's, and's, or but's. You're taking real classes, just on the internet versus on- campus. Find a small selection of Associate's, Bachelor's, and Master's programs. The currently, small list is ever growing.
Although, I've never heard of this online college, it seems to get pretty good reviews. You can take online classes or sign up for a full degree program. Rasmussen College offers you a full online education and distance learning program that can be taken at your convenience.
You can earn your degree 100% online using DeVry's distant learning program. The university set up their online degree program for busy adults who need to be able to work on their education on their own time.

I'm in a distance learning class with Troy University. I like it. The only disadvantage is teaching myself high, more advanced math. I just don't like the idea of going to a campus. Tried it, and didn't like it, so I needed a different option.
Dangit Whitney!! You got this topic before I could.
I'm taking classes at Axia, which is the associate's degree side of University of Phoenix. :D
Heehee... I have a few other distance learning ideas that I'm working on. I almost applied to the University of Phoenix, but they irritated me when they called multiple times for over 3 months. I asked for more info, and they wouldn't leave me alone! But, luckily Troy opened their distance learning program around that time, and my dad works there, so it was a no brainer. Discount! Ha.
I do the exact same thing as you! When I was in grammer it was pretty easy then when I got older it just got harder and harder. History,Art,MATH *gives me the heeby jeebys* Great hub Whitney! B-)
Ha!
Well dangit, please don't write about the differences between distance learning and brick-and-mortar schooling. That's what I'm writing about!
Wendy- I just have a problem with organized education. Ha.
Charlotte- I had plans for it. It was the 3rd idea that I had about online learning. Ha.
Nooooo!!! *pouts and begs* I just know you're going to get 10 hubs in today, can I just have that one? *supercuteface*
OkOk... Since you begged. Ha. Plus I figured a way to enter what I really wanted to say in my 2nd idea. It's all yours. :-)
Distance learning (good old times by mail) has been in operation for a long time like Excellsior which used to be Regents of New York or Phoenix since 1976 but online form of education is new and very exciting. Congrats!
Is that your computer wearing a plastic poncho in a painter's studio? A very strange and compelling image.
Raven- no that is not my computer. I just found it an interesting picture. Distancec learning has been available for a while, but as for Troy, I believe that just started their online program a few years back. Or at least began offering more degree programs a few years back.
It certainly is an interesting photo. May I ask about the other subjects you are studing at Troy? I also would like to say happy studing if that is not too corny. :)
I'm majoring in Busines Administration and Management.
That's cool. :)

Distance Learning courses are wonderful for people who live in rural areas, or who have young children and need to stay home. I work at a college that offers a lot of these kinds of classes, but my department is still trying to implement them for our special needs population students. Good info Whitney.
