Why Play Guitar Scales?

I was first exposed to guitar scales after playing the guitar for a few months. My first guitar teacher, Donna Curry, had arranged for her students to learn guitar scales from someone who had actually learned from one of the most famous guitarist in the world. He had participated in a Segovia Master Class, we were told.

His name escapes me now, but I do remember being impressed with how beautifully his fingers played the guitar. He told us that all of Segovia’s students had to master every one of the famous Segovia Scales called ‘Diatonic Major and Minor Scales.’

A few years later, I branched into playing classical guitar and studied with Frederick Noad. I too was soon playing these Segovia Scales. As I recall, every teacher I studied with used them.

Playing guitar scales is one of the best ways to work on your technique. You can concentrate on proper finger placement and on keeping your hands relaxed. They are easy to memorize and it’s a good habit to play them often.

'C' Scale Video

Here’s a little video I made showing you how to play the ‘C’ scale. It’s the same fingering as the Segovia ‘C’ scale and is the same one I learned so many years ago as a new guitarist.

Andres Segovia

I started teaching at age 17 and used to buy every guitar recording I could find. I had over 50 guitar recordings. Here are a few of my favorite classical guitarists.

If you’ve never heard Segovia play Spanish music, you’re in for a real treat. He’s a master. He can get sounds out of his guitar that are completely unique to his style.

I saw some of his later concerts and although it was painful to watch him walk so slowly and stiffly to his chair, he still had that ‘magic’ well into his 80’s and 90’s.

Julian Bream

Julian Bream is a brilliant musician. I remember looking at one of his concert programs and saw a popular piece listed that every guitar student played. I was pleasantly surprised by the way he shaped it and made it his own.

If you are a student of the guitar, I challenge you to work on improving your technique. The C scale in this Hubpage is a good place to start. May I also encourage you to listen to wonderful artists of this instrument. If there's a concert you can attend, do that too. It will inspire your own playing.

Jean Welles is the greatest teacher!! Unlike other guitar lesson videos, you will actually learn something right away! As a begginer never having expirienced with a guitar, I watched one of her videos on youtube, and in a few minutes I was already playing and singing a worship song on my new guitar. She is trully amazing!

Great hub, I used to 'play' the electric guitar when I was about 14. Wanted to be in a band but to be honest I was rubbish! The band dream didn't last too long!

Good stuff. Playing scales can seem boring on their own, but playing them over relative chord progressions can really bring out the beauty of them, and helps the player get the feel of the scale and notes being played. That's how I learned my scales.
