Hubbing Away from the Computer

Ways to Work on Hubs Anywhere

It's almost summer and the weather is getting beautiful! Across the country people are leaving their computers for the outdoors, and many Hubbers will be among them! While you're out and about having summer fun, don't forget that you'll see and do lots of Hubworthy things. Just because you're not in your computer chair doesn't mean you have to forget about Hubbing. Here are a few ways to prepare, and even compose Hubs while you're out and about:

  • Use a voice recorder to capture your thoughts. This is a great way to keep those good ideas from escaping before you have time to write them down. You can always transcribe and edit your recordings into a Hub when you get home.
  • Take photos of everything. You never know which parts of your experience you might end up wanting to write about later.
  • Use a text-to-speech app on your laptop, tablet, or phone. You'll still need to go back and edit your work, but this is an easy way to transcribe your thoughts while maintaining the use of your hands and eyes to properly enjoy the world around you.
  • Take a good old notebook and pen. Take them with you everywhere. You never know what will inspire the urge to write, and if you're old-fashioned like me, you won't want to be without these trusty friends when the muse calls. :)

Happy adventure Hubbing!

Awesome Phone Apps for Writers

If you have a smartphone, these apps can be a big help while writing and composing away from the computer:

  • Dragon Dictation is a free voice-to-text app for the iPhone that allows you to compose text easily by speaking. Its sister app for Android, Dragon Mobile Assistant, is a bit more limited, but you can still use your voice to compose your writing in an email draft for later.
  • Evernote offers both Android and iPhone apps that provide easy access to your documents across all of your devices, making editing, tweaking, and adding to article drafts easy to do anywhere.
  • The Google Docs App works on both Android and iPhone and it's great for writing on the go, plus you can easily upload and organize your photos into folders along with your Hub drafts.
