A True Story of Friendship of a Donkey and Horse.

Friendship and Love

This is a true story of Friendship the friendship of two animals. I heard this story from a family member. She has some friends who owned a horse and a donkey. They told her about the love of two best friends.

Do animals feel and have feelings of love? Do they care enough to mourn the loss of someone they love? I believe they do. Dogs show love often for humans and their animal friends.

Here's how this beautiful story goes. When the family would take the horse for a ride or away from the donkey for a short time he would be sad and would bray until they returned him.The two had a very close bond.

The Horse.

The horse was getting old, they knew he had little time left. They explained to the vet about the friendship of the two animals and ask him what they could do when it was time to put the horse down. The vet told them to let him see them bury the horse.

The Final Day.

The day finally came. This was a sad day for all but more so for the best friends. He loved his horse friend so much. They buried him near the donkey and they had him watch as they buried him. He could see they had put his friend in the ground.

The next morning the lady of the house put a bucket of feed out. When she went out later she found the bucket on top of the horse's grave with only half the feed in the bucket.

The day after she had found the bucket on the horse's grave, she put another bucket of feed out for him, and then watched out the window. She saw him eat half the food and take the bucket and place it on the horse's grave. After five days, he stopped putting the feed on the grave. Maybe he realized the horse was not coming back. He must think of his old friend every day

Herd Animals

Donkeys are herd animals they easily attach to other animals like the horse. They can become depressed when losing a friend from their herd.

Animals Don't Feel

People say animals don’t feel or love. I believe they do and I think this kind of story proves it.

We had to put our dog, Reno down last week. When Reno was younger our cat was dying we had taken Spencer our cat to the vet. The vet had told us he was a senior citizen and it was time to let him go. He said to give him over night and see if things would get better if not then to bring him in the next day. We laid our beautiful cat down on the rug he always loved to lay on. The next morning my husband was getting ready to take our much-loved cat to the vet. We knew we could do nothing more for him. Reno walked over by the cat and laid his big body beside him and gently laid his head on the cat's stomach. Something he had never done before. He knew the Spencer was sick. It was like he was trying to comfort him. I had never seen anything like it. This was a big dog that seems to never care about the cats in our home. I guess he did care about our Spencer.

Our Springer keeps looking for Reno. He wouldn't lay on Reno's dog bed I tried putting a new blanket on it and still he wouldn't lay on it. Here's a picture of him shortly after I put the blanket on. He puts his body part way on the pillow.

Aug 22:

I put Doc's bed underneath Reno's bed. Doc’s bed is the red plaid pillow. Reno's pillow is pink with the brown cover. Doc flipped Reno's bed off of his bed tonight. I just set it up like this today. He is just determined not to sleep on Reno's bed. Reno's bed is the better pillow and I wanted Doc to start using it, but I guess he just won't do it.

moonlake, a beautiful write, with some wonderful stories. I remember seeing a news item not so long ago, where a young boy was being attacked by a dog. His cat flew from the house and headed right at the dog, chasing it away and saving the young boy from the attack. Anyone who love animals know that they are capable of a wide range of emotions. I could tell you a few personal stories about my dogs, but that will take a whole hub. :) Thank you for sharing, voting up all the way.

I truly believe that animals can feel and have feelings for others. This is a beautiful Hub moonlake. When I adopted our pet pig, he was at a shelter in a make-shift outdoor pen with a dog house. Despite being dumped there by his humans, he bounced right back when we brought him home. I had no cats at the time I got him. But, that night while trying to figure out his routine, I was walking him around outside. (He was 60 pounds then and could be walked on a leash). There were coyotes in the woods behind my house. A cat ran up to me and in to my home through the back door. She was a stray cat I had seen around before. Well, it didn't take long for the two to bond. They rub noses. They used to sleep by the fire place. When Wilbur was smaller, he used to jump on the couch and lay down next to the family.

Soon afterward, we adopted another cat from a relative who could no longer care for him. The two cats would go to sleep in a clothes basket, and Wilbur would try to get in the basket to snuggle with them. :D

Poor donkey. :( Very touching story!

Animals do feel have feelings and they love those around them. A very good example is our pets. Your pet gets very happy to see you back home from office. No matter whether its a dog or a cat or anything else. This is what you call feelings- love. Same is applicable among the different pets you own. They live together, play together-like best buds. So, of course they'll miss them if they're gone forever!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story. :)

Awe, such a sweet story! I do believe that animals can care about one another. Being an animals lover, I have read many stories such as this. This story breaks my heart a little as I'm sure the donkey misses his horse friend and I'm sure Doc misses Reno. Lovely hub. Voted up and beautiful! :)

It's true that animals show love to one another. I read a story once about a cat and a dog who lived next door and took daily walks together. I love these stories, especially the one about your dog and cat. The wombat and kangaroo photos are adorable! Very moving--thank you for sharing.

I really enjoyed reading these three true vignettes you shared with us. I, too, believe it's important to let a companion animal know when their good buddy is dying or has died. They understand and it gives them a bit of closure. Now if only we humans could get a wee bit more closure. I was thinking again this morning about my sweet dog I gave away in 2006 because I thought our move back to Hawaii would be too much for her. (She would have had to be in quarantine for four months.) How stupid I was. I miss her still. She has a good home, though. I also have a couple animals I've loved and lost to death. Faith gets me through that -- although it doesn't take away 'missing' them. But somehow it's harder when they're still alive, walking the earth and you can't go get them.

Thank you for sharing these three stories with all of us. Voting up, awesome and sharing.

I do definitely agree that animals have feelings just as humans do. Some more than others, or maybe just in different ways that we don't understand.

It's clear that dogs have a deep devotion to their owner and will show grief when their owner dies. Dogs will always display love and concern when they see another animal -- or a human being -- is ill. Your dog Reno is a good example of that, when your cat was old and dying.

The beginning of your story about the donkey and the horse was very touching. It goes to show that not only dogs have feelings.

If I understood correctly I think you said that Reno also had to be put down. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I am sure all your pets were wonderful loving creatures.

Oh, it is heart-wrenching but a really warm and beautiful story of love, friendship and companionship between animals. Made me cry. It is really touching of how their lives had brought each other together, then, one has to leave the other. I believe that animals have their special place in heaven and even would meet their owners. One day, they'll all meet and be happy again. I love this hub, sad but what lovely animals you have! The photos of the donkey and the horse, is very touching, as well as Doc. Would love to share this! Thank you, moonlake.

Of course animals have emotions! Look at the elephant and how heartbroken they get if one of their own is killed.

That was a sweet story. I don't know who could possibly think that animals don't love, feel, remember, etc...I've seen the love between two animals first hand, as well. My border collie had a very hard time after her doberman friend died (best friend). She lost a lot of spunk after that, and she never regained it.

Hi Moonlake

My heart went out to to the donkey who lost his dear friend.

Animals do have feelings and are much more intuitive than some people give them credit for.

I remember when my sister's dog Delmore(lab/border collie mix) was sick. Winnie(beagle mix), her other dog stayed close by. I knew that Winnie knew that Delmore was dying.

Voted up and beautiful

Moonlake, Oh I'm so glad to see this one is up and running. I had to drop back by and reread this very touching story. Quite believable. My friend in Florida has a menagerie of animals including three dogs, a cat and a cockatiel. The bird actually lands on the floor near the German Shepherd and talks to her and tries to imitate the dogs when they bark.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww (she says, wiping away tears). What a beautiful story, moonlake. Animals have feelings, so why wouldn't the donkey mourn the loss of his best friend? I'm guessing he "got" that the horse was sick, and may have thought putting the half bucket of feed on the grave might make his friend well again. How sweet...

Derdru, Thanks for stopping by. Our dog is still not the same. He will miss Reno for awhile I think. Sorry about your Caliquina.

Moonlake, What an endearing, lovely, loving tribute to the friendship between a donkey and a horse! Also, thank you for respecting reader input by including the exit poll. Yes, I've heard of similar instances, particularly involving horses and another animal. For example, all the great military and race horses have companion animals, though typically cats that often sleep on the horse's back.

My kitten Merlino grieved when the love of his life, Caliquina, was killed. He wouldn't eat for 2 or 3 days.

Respectfully, and with many thanks for caring and sharing, Derdriu

We have seen this in person. One of our dogs mourned right along with us when we lost our first dog, Kelly. It was pitiful. It finally helped when a puppy that had been abandoned was adopted by us. Our Kerri (who was a puppy and grew up with Kelly) mothered him (our new dog, Reggie) as if he was her own. It brought life back into our home and smiles again for everyone involved...both the two legged and four legged creatures. Your story is heartwarming. Voted up!

What a beautiful story. It was sad but deeply meaningful. Animals do have feelings, thoughts and dreams. When we lost our dog Slick, his companion Buddy Lee mourned for months watching out the front window for his return. Every time we came home he would get excited then sad when Slick wasn't with us. Up and awesome!
