Aggressive Dog Training At Home

3 Reasons To Do Aggressive Dog Training At Home.

There are many valid reasons why you should opt for aggressive dog training at home.

Firstly, it will not cost you anything, secondly, it is safer for your dog and lastly, it would be more effective.

Since you are going to be the one who will be interacting with your dog, then you should also be the one to train it. If you hire other trainers, then your dog will have a hard time following your orders.

Set up the training ground plus your rewards for the whole process. The training ground should be free of any sharps and other materials that could harm your dog. For the rewards, tasty treats or toys would suffice as long as they can divert the dog's attention.

Never start your aggressive dog training by awaking a sleeping dog. If it is still sleeping, leave it until it wakes up on its own. Waking it up will create a bad temper which is not a good start.

To begin with, the dog must respond to the basic commands. Start with sit, followed by stand and stay. If these three are followed, make sure to give your dog the praise it deserves. You can say the words “Yes” and “Good dog” for each correct action. Dogs that fail to follow instruction can be denied any treats or ignored but never punished physically.

Aggression behavior is best corrected with the time-out method and counter-conditioning where dogs are gradually desensitized to various stimuli.

In the time out method, say an empathic 'NO" on any misbehavior followed by placing the dog behind a closed door, or completely ignoring it for about thirty seconds until it realizes its wrongful acts.

Counter conditioning on the other hand, happens when the dog is rewarded with a treat that is given to interrupt an expected negative behavior. Dogs like it when they are praised and rewarded. Therefore, you must keep this kind of aggressive dog training up until the dog stops exhibiting the aggressive behavior at the presence of the stimuli that caused it to react previously.

For more hopeless cases, the most recommended course of action would be the use of a well fitting mouth muzzle. Muzzles come in different sizes and you should choose the best fit for your dog.

If your dog seems to be uncontrollable and continues to bite people, then the ultimate end would be putting it to sleep. This becomes unavoidable especially if the bite victims are likely to increase in number because of the uncontrollably aggressive dog.

Counter Conditioning: Positive Aggressive Dog Training Method.

A professional dog trainer can give a you variety of tips and methods in curbing your dog’s aggression, but one of the most effective ways of minimizing canine hostility is counter-conditioning.

This positive aggressive dog training method makes use of a reward system in correcting aggressive behavior in dogs. Take for example, if your dog displays aggression towards another dog while walking them, giving them a piece of meat or ham in the presence of other dogs can counter the aggressive behavior. With enough repetition and proper execution, they will eventually associate the presence of other dogs with the piece of meat.

This type of aggressive dog training method takes its cue from Ivan Pavlov’s Classical Conditioning, a form of associative learning. This technique involves presenting a neutral stimulus along with a significant stimulus. This neutral stimulus does not necessarily evoke an evident behavioral response, but with continuous presentation of both stimuli, it will eventually allow the subject to associate the neutral stimulus with a significant stimulus.

Case in point, an experiment was done with a dog and a bell. Every time the bell was rung, the dog is presented his favorite food. Eventually, the dog associated the ringing bell with the food he is given. As a result, the dog salivates every time he hears a bell. The same philosophy applies to counter conditioning.

However, to ensure the effectiveness of this type of aggressive dog training method, counter conditioning must go hand in hand with systematic desensitization, another form of behavioral conditioning.

This method is used in treating anxiety and phobia that is experienced by an individual when exposed to a certain stimulus. For instance, your dog may not be used to seeing another dog when walking on the streets. Try recreating the same scenario from afar. The best place to do this is from a neutral location, for instance, a friend’s yard where a dog will feel at ease but not territorial.

Once he stops displaying fear or aggression towards this stimulus, reward him with a treat or affection right away. Later on, with the combination of distance (systematic desensitization) and reward (counter-conditioning), your dog will no longer react aggressively towards another dog or pedestrian when walking on the streets.

When it comes to modifying your dog’s behavior, patience is still a virtue. Take your time. They won’t change their ways in a snap of a finger. Remember how long it took you to learn how to use the toilet when you were still a child.
