All about canaries: How to purchase a canary
If we have positively decided to start taking care of a canary, we will have to purchase one from a local pet shop. Purchasing a canary is not an easy task, especially when you are a beginner. However, mistakes happen even to experienced breeders.
When we have prepared a room for the canary, which includes cage and all the necessary equipment, then we can go an purchase a bird. Those who have friend breeder won`t have much trouble and will get their canary much easier. It`s interesting that beginners in breeding pay much attention to feather color. Some salesmen misuse that fact and breed canaries of a certain color no matter of their song, ancestry and other important properties. I advise new owners to buy a healthy, well-built and cheerful canary. Also take notice of his age and the time of year when you buy it. A good breeder will always sell a canary after he has finished with moulting and after he has learned to sing. It is difficult to get a “young and perspective” canary from such breeder.
It is the best to buy a male who is older than a year. It is not recommended to buy a canary which is older than five years, especially when you want to use them for mating. Females also should be purchased after they have gotten older than a year and before the mating season. It is considered that, for a beginner, it is of no importance which color is the bird, so you should pay more attention that he is healthy, cheerful and - that he sings. Experience has shown that canaries of older types and varieties (blue, yellow, green) are more resistant to diseases and that is of greatest importance in the beginning.
Take note that a canary`s appearance and color has nothing to do with their offspring, because what matters is their genotype and if he is of a regular race. For example, beautiful red color can be lost due to improper nourishment which can lead to disappointment later.
So, what should I do after I have purchased a canary?
After a canary is purchased and a way into his new home is made, there are lots of duties that await us. You should treat your bird with care, because he is also very generous and friendly. The most important thing to every beginner is that his canary is properly fed and taken care about. It is advised that the canary should be always fed by the same person, because then it is easiest to him to accommodate to new conditions. His surroundings should be peaceful and quiet because noise disturbs your little singer.
You must not make a toy out of a canary – do not let children play with him and touch him with their fingers! It is not advised to let the canary fly across the room because he really is the happiest in his cage. In a room, he flies to the windows and hits them, and he also does that to furniture and curtains. He might even fall on a hot stove or in a pot of boiling water. You surely do not want to explain your children why are they having canary soup for lunch! Canaries that spend time out of their cages are prone to diseases, they will be upset, will stop singing and might die.
So, after all, they are not so hard to breed if you do not want to be a professional breeder, but you must follow a few easy steps. Have a nice time with it and I hope this was of some help to you!
