Vicious Pit Bull

American Pit Bull Terriers are the most vicious breed out there, right? I mean they're a danger to both children and men, alike. Ignore the statistics, they're not the least likely breed to bite; they're vicious and a hazard to any home...

Well, now let's get to the serious stuff...

Although, the "pit bull" is the is statistically, the cause of most dog attacks, the American Pit Bull Terrier, is truly the least likely to bite a human. When you get to the resources behind the numbers, you realize that the majority of the dogs that attack are either abused, starved, badly bred, or some other blend of characteristics that lead up to an attack. But, you usually don't hear about that...

American Pit Bull Terrier

But, this isn't about dog attacks or vicious "pit bulls," it's about my Blue APBT, MIA.

For a short introduction to the American Pit Bull Terrier, the following articles will help enlighten even those skeptical about the breed.

My mom has three pitbulls, a mom, her brother, and her baby. They are absolutely three of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. They have such great personalities and the only time they would ever hurt anyone would be if they were breaking in. I also had one of the puppies, who is so skittish anyone who meets her cannot believe she is a "ferocious" pitbulls. It makes me sad how they are portrayed just because of their breed, and how 90% of the dogs in animal shelters are pitbulls. They make great pets. You just have to treat them right!

Anyone that thinks pitbulls are vicious has never been around a well trained pitbull

McDoinkets 4 years ago

I have had 2 pitbulls and they were absolutely nice as can be and loved everybody and every other dog. It's all about socializing them properly. I have had a weiner dog that bit kids, and a golden retriever that bit a kid that was squirting it with a squirt gun. We were forced to put the dog down. Both the weiner dog and Golden Retriever were very nice and well trained dogs. Pitbulls get a bad rap because idiots use them to fight because of their build and jaws. The only dogs i have been around that i have noticed have an actual aggression issue are chows, but even they are nice when trained properly. The kid that was squirting my dog and got bit resulting in my dog being put down, is now a homeless native on the streets. Go figure.

If it's true that people look like their dogs then you are Beautiful, (or Handsome if you’re a Fella), just like Mia. She looks to have a lovely temperament and to be in very good health, again a reflexion on you.

As a new PBT owner I am enjoying your articles, learning from them and the comments. Many thanks.

PS. I’m so glad Mia's ears are not docked.

All dogs will bite if provoked, it is their defense mechanism. It is up to us as humans to learn what our furry friends are trying to tell us. I have had a pit bull, she chased shadows of butterflies when it got to hot in the afternoon for the wild birds to play with her. She chased there shadows as well. She had been abused when she came to me, left in a cage to soil herself, then punished for doing so. With a little love from us, she had no lasting effects. She was a licker, and thought it was great fun to 'pin' you to the floor and lick you. If pit bulls have a bad rap, it's because of the humans who have allowed this to happen. No if's ands or butt's about it.

"Least likely to bite," but somehow I'd rather be bitten by a Yorkie or a pug. Conveniently ignore the fatality and face-ripped-off statistics. Your heart is full of murder.

Thank you for the input. My blue APBT has no Staffordshire in her.

In all actuality though, a Staffordshire originated as a Pit Bull. The only difference is the initial name change to be associated with the AKC and sight moderations to the physical traits which have occurred throughout the years.

There is no such thing as a purebred blue pit bull. Blue would only come from being bred with a staffordshire terrier. Just for all of you who are paying a bunch of money for a supposedly "purebred pitbull" puppy that's blue.

Loved this article. Your pictures were adorable and the information is great. We adopted a little guy in April and he looks a lot like your Mia. His companion, our 10 yo Cookie, loves to play with him too. We've shared so much joy in the past few months watching him grow and learn. Thanks for sharing your experiences with Pit Bulls.

Nice looking dog! I have a 5 month old blue pit, named Blue, lol. He's great, I've been training him since he was 8 weeks old, he heels, sits, comes, lays down, all the normal stuff. He is fantastic with my 4 year old son and his little friends. One of the best dogs I have ever owned.

jennifer 7 years ago

You are the owner and you make the dog what it is no matter the breed! I was scared at first till I purchased a blue pure bread puppy and she is the best thing for my family we've trained her to protect and to love and that's what she does. IF YOUR DOG IS MEAN AND HAS AN UGLY ATTITUDE IT MUST HAVE LEARNED IT FROM YOU!!!!!!

Great info Whitney !! Nice to see more responsible pit bull owners educating others about the truth behind the breed.

Sounds like you just need to work on basic training. You can't expect him to come to you in a high distraction area if he doesn't know how. He won't grow out of that if you don't train him.

You can't say that the father was mean just because he was being protective of his people and home. That's being territorial not aggressive or mean, and most dogs experience this to some degree.

Positive training is going to be the best way, but if you're not experienced enough and you can't stay consistent at all times, then you'll run into problems in the long run. This should have all been started day one when you received the dog.

The dog is being protective of your daughter. I would suggest putting him in a separate room when you have to scold her. These dogs will generally try to protect the one it attaches to most, which in this case is your daughter.

These dogs are very stubborn and aren't for those who aren't willing to train and socialize constantly. Unlikely what you may have heard, the breed doesn't just flip out. You'll see signs along the way; it just takes an observant owner to detect them. Most cases that you here where the dog just flipped one day are not accurate as dogs don't do that, there are always signs. It's just that mots owners don't notice them.

I have a 7month old blue pit bull pup named C-lo. He weighs 65lbs. right now and his head is 20".I think that he is HUGE for his age.We only feed him ULTRA puppy food and give him little "scooby" snacks here and there.I also have 2 adult golden retrievers and they all seem to get along quite well.My boy golden will be 9years old this month and my girl just turned 6.Do you think they will continue to get along as C-lo gets older?I am so worried that he may just flip out one day and kill one of my goldens. He doesn't show any signs of aggression and seems to respect the older dogs quite well.I also have a 15 year old girl that C-lo seems to be very attached to and DOES NOT like it when she gets in trouble and I try to discipline her.He jumps in front of me and looks at me as to say "hey, leave my little girl alone!"what can I do to be sure we never have any probems with aggression from him? C-lo's dad is veerrry mean and he was my neighbors dog(very well taken care of and not mean at all with their family, only other people). How can I (the female) assert myself as being in control and gain his trust so that he will always listen and respect me? AND as he grows up will the smartass puppy behaviors (I>E> I tell him to come inside and he runs like as if to truck me and takes off and then comes back and then listens and comes back in the house)Whats the best and least harsh way to train my pit? I really love him sooo much and he has become an endeared member of our family. Thanks! Cyndi from Miami, FL
