Chug: Chihuahua Pug Mix
My Little Chugs: The First Month
I had bought the Chug from Samuline on February 15, 2012 for $25. She told me that the dog was a year and a half years old and his name was Lucian. I found out later that the dog's real name is Dewders from folks who recognized Sam's dog in my neighborhood. When I went to get the dog shots, I was told the dog is most likely about four and a half years old. The vet said that to remove the dew claws on the back legs would cost $20 each. Since they didn't bother the dog, I didn't get them removed.
Samuline was the sole owner of Dewders/Chuggers and she had to give the dog up because she needed to escape from an abusive relationship with a sociopath. I was a bit leary about getting this dog because I've recently had a very bad experience with a Jack Russell who was owned by a very abusive woman who then tried to threaten and stalk me after I gave the dog up. The insanity of this former owner by calling me a dog-knapper, abusive texts and veiled threats plus slander on the local craigslist explained why the Jack Russell's behavior was damaged beyond repair for the average person's ability.
I changed the name from Dewders to Chuggers for two reasons: One, I figured that since Sam was in a bad relationship that perhaps the word Dewders gave the dog bad memories. I named the dog Chuggers because he is 3/4 Chihuahua and 1/4 pug. Chuggers is a very good, sweet dog, who listens and loves to love. Chuggers does not have emotional problems as the Jack Russell did.
But I did know that the man that Samuline was escaping from did abuse the dog.
At one time, both Sam & her abusing partner were at my house. The dog Dewders/Chuggers went underneath the table and 'slept' not moving. I knew that the dog's reaction is one that cannot physically escape and 'sleeps' to escape whatever strife is going to eventually happen.
The dog bounced back to normal after the couple left my place.
Chugs the Wonder Dog
Chuggers has longer and more powerful legs than a Chihuahua. He can jump up about four feet high, climbs stairs and rock inclines without fear and jumps down from about 4 to five feet. Chuggers is a very strong and fearless dog and does not 'yap like most little dogs but gives out a 'woof'.
The First Month: Dog Feed & Training
For training, I bought some smoked ham hocks and broke them up into little bits as treats. I've fed raw fat trimmings from beef but I wasn't too sure about raw chicken. I didn't want the dog to get sick so when I removed the chicken skin I fried it up and then blenderized it so that the dog wouldn't choke on trying to suck down an entire skin.
I don't buy the dog chews at the store but my neighbor gave my dog a treat stick and that was the first time ever that the dog displayed food aggression. He was hiding underneath the couch and whenever the other dog (with a treat stick in his mouth), was within 12 feet the dog began to growl.
The very first day I bought a small bag of the cheapest dog food which made his feces so dry, the poor little dog was straining to evacuate. Then I bought Purina Little Bites that made his stool mushy. Afterwards, I tried IAMS adult food and it seemed OK.
I was told to save money, not to buy dog food at the department store but to go to a feed store to get better food at lower prices. I followed this advice and bought an 18 pound bag of Nutri Source Lamb Meal for $26 dollars. The dog food from the feed store doesn't have different colors or shapes which were designed for human appeal, what you get is basic good dog kibble. Since my dog has been spoiled by me what happens mostly now is that any leftovers I blenderize and mix with the kibble - the dog now has a habit of licking the good stuff off and leaving the kibble behind.
My dog is between an size small and a medium according to PetSmart dog sizing.
Why Don't You Love Me Like My Dog Does?
I Thought I Killed My Chuggers & Cried!
I have a kennel cage on the back seat because at one time on Fort Huachuca, Chuggers leapt out of the open window when I stopped the car to read a sign. I had my ear buds on and didn't even realize that Chugs was gone until I went to let him out. I only had this 4 year old dog less than 30 days and haven't had shots, tags or neutered yet.
I was driving real slow up and down the dirt road calling 'Chugs", then I went back on the paved road looking for a wet spot on the road for Chugs. The dog warden found him, called my phone number on his collar in about 2 hours. I paid $50 to get him back from the dog pound. That's why I now always have Chugs in the kennel when driving.
People joke with me about the "dangerous" patrol/guard dog I have. As if that's the reason why I have a little dog in a car kennel but I like my windows down in the summertime. Yes, I always leave my windows down even parked. I do not drive with the dog in the car if it's over 90 degrees even with the windows down and parked in the shade.
On the mountains I have Chugs on a leash at all times except when I in a deep river ravine between two cliffs because there is no way he can get out and get lost. I don't want him chasing deer, squirrels or snakes and falling off of cliffs. Carr Canyon is beautiful but there is no way I could chase him up and down the deep crevices and precipices.
8 Months Later: My Little Chugs Saved Me From A Black Bear!
After two years of drought and then the fire last year, the mountains have no berries. Black bear sightings in residential areas are frequent. I drove my 2000 Kia Sportage with the high clearance and small wheel base up the twisting turning Carr Canyon dirt road to reach the Sky Island of the Coronado National Park in September after the monsoon season had ended.
The pollen levels of the mountain wildflowers that grew in the scorched earth were overwhelming. I felt tired and after eating a can of soup, decided to take a nap in my car. The windows were down, and the spare tire mount latched with the hatchback up.
I made the mistake of not putting the empty can of soup in a plastic bag. Flipped the rear car seat down and fell asleep with my bare feet resting on the spare tire. Chuggers napped near my head.
I heard a pair of footsteps and thought it was a couple of hikers. Chugs started barking and would've chased the bear if I had not kept the leash on him while sleeping. The black bear was probably female at about 200 pounds and 25 feet away from me. The bear would've entered the car while I was sleeping it if wasn't for Chuggers barking up a storm. I yelled and between the both of us - made the bear go away. It stopped about 75 feet away and I continued to whistle loudly with my fingers in my mouth.
Yes! My "attack" dog saved my toes from being torn off! I will never sleep where I eat ever again in bear country. And uh - yeah I updated my hub on Hiking & Camping Safely in Black Bear Country

Little Dog Jumped Cliff!
On the top of Massai Point in the Chiricahua National Monument, my little dog jumped over the wall where there was nothing but air - and death. The only thing that saved my chug was the halter harness and not using a neck leash. He was saved because I had my 15 foot leash attached to the loop on the backpack that I was wearing.
Not For Climbing Use
The once 20 foot leash was made into two short leashes had a small keyring carabiner connecting the two looped leashes and a larger one to the pack-back.
After the fall, Chugs was not whining or barking but was standing like a goat on a small two inch ledge that was at a angle sloping down. I did not want to haul him up and break his leg in the process because his back leg was tangled in the leash but the ledge allowed me to loosen the tension of the leash a little so that Chugs could untangle his leg free.
After hauling Chuggers up, I checked for pain and broken bones figuring he might have at least a bruised ribcage but he seems very well.
As I was waiting for the sunset and reading the large sign with the small icons on the bottom I realized; no smoking and no dogs are allowed.
