Exercise For Older Dogs

Do Older Dogs Still Need Exercise?

Yes, your dog need exercise daily, it will help them mentally has well as physically, keeping them active will help them to live a long and better life. If your dog is near the age of six , now is the great time to get him into a regular program of exercise.

Inside your aging dog, everything is slowing down , even their brain function,

this is why it is so very inportaint to start your aging dog exercising,

Even if it is only walking.

It is very easy to watch our dogs lie around sleeping. They look so happy and they are so peacefull. But exercises will do your dog more good in the long run and will help improve the quality of life in your dog.

Exercise will get the blood flowing and help to warm up those old joints. In addition, exercise helps your dogs bowel to work right so your dog won't get constipated, this is especially important in older dogs.If you alow your dog to just lay around all day their muscles will get weak and they will begain to have a hard time walking. that is why it is so very importaint to give you dog daily exercise.

Outdoor exercise is alwaye best when weather is sunny and warm, but never over walk your dog on a very hot day, or to when it is very cold, older dogs can get sick easier than when they were younger.

Exercises For Dogs

Start out slow at first by just walking your dog for 5 minutes a day and in a few week you can increase the time if your dog does well with his 5 minute walks. Spend more time keeping your dog active will benefit you both.

If your dog has joint pain you may want to help them by giving them.supplement for their joints and vitamin and mineral supplement may help to. Walking many not be a good exercise for your dog but swimming may be better because it is easier on their joints causing less pain.

Get you dog's favorite toy and get them to play with you, playing ball and even frisbee. Anything that will get your dog playing will be good exercise for them, the point is make it fun. Anything is better than just sleeping all the time. All this will help your dog to keep getting around on their own.

All these thing will help to give your dog a better, healthier and happier life and keep him active far into his old age years.

Great tips! I have a 6.5 year old mini poodle/schnauzer mix who runs around the back yard with our 4 year old shepard mix from the pound. I think Earl would do well with some walks, too. :)

Hi stephhicks68 sounds like your dogs are very active already, and that is a good thing. And walking would make a nice change for them while still keeping them active.

Thanks for stopping by and to for your comments.

Hi Tom,

Tanya is a lucky dog for having you as her friend. It is wonderful to see you take such good care of her. I have 3 dogs and need to walk them more. They run with each other in the backyard, but when I take them for walks they are soooo happy. Thanks for a great hub, written with love.

Hi Tom, you are so right that dogs are way smarter than people, and we could learn from them. Not only do they impress us with things like understanding weather, look at how they understand us. They also live in the moment, appreciate what they have, don't stay angry, and love unconditionally. I wish I was as smart as my dogs.

You are so right toknowinfo i agree with you 100%, we all could use a good dose of dog sense !

Have a great week my friend!!!

Good reminder for me to start exercising my little guys more. They are both getting up there in age, but still have spunk enough to run up and down the drive way to bark through each gate at anything that moves on the other side. I probably need more exercise these days than they do, as i spend way too much time on this dam computer. thanks for another good article.

Great hub and great information Kahsmir. My oldest dog is 10 and our younger one is two. I make it a priority to walk them everyday that weather permits. My ten year old is in great shape for his age because of our walks. BTW, I love the pictures of your dog. What a little cutie.

You've addressed a really important subject - many people love dogs, but not all of them should have a dog - it's so easy to love a dog, but caring for them properly is costly and time consuming - it is just as important for dogs to have exercise as it is for people to have exercise - 2o minutes, twice a day, and more if you have a very active breed - if dogs get regular exercise, they will stay vigorous all their lives, and have fewer health problems - all that exercise keeps owners active and healthy as well - kudos to you for a great article - B.

This is good advice regarding the need for exercise for dogs and humans both. Our aging Pomeranian is showing his age as time passes. He can no longer jump into chairs as easily as in the past. I can definitely identify! My knees are not what they used to be when I was young! Ha! Up and useful votes and sharing.

Great advice. Dogs need exercise. Just like us, human beings. My dog Angus is a lap dog and loves to just sit or lay down on the floor but he likes to walk around my garden and play with my brother´s dog. I think that´s enough exercise for him in a day. Voted up and useful. Thanks for sharing.

We have an older dog - actually she seems to be very old - that we took in because she had been very abused and wanted to help her. We sometimes have a hard time getting her to go on the walks we take our other dogs on. I find if I walk slowly around the yard she will sometimes follow me. Great hub. Great suggestions.

Hi KoffeeKlatch Gals nice to see you, your dog may not want to go on walks because she may have arthritics in her legs. Your vet could check her out give her something to help with the pain, just a thought . Thanks so much for stopping by and to for your nice comments !

Thinking again about my older dog---she goes out with her "senior" pack once a week and the other days we walk and hang out in the garden, but I worry that she isn't always getting enough---
