How Much Does A Meerkat Cost To Buy? Prices & Living Expenses
If you are wondering how much a meerkat costs then that is what we are going to discuss here. We will look at Meerkat prices, where to buy meerkats from and how much it costs to keep them. If you are seriously considering buying a meerkat then this page will tell you how much it is going to cost you and how exactly to go about it.
In the past few years the humble meerkat has become the latest pet craze. Due to a certain commercial, these cute cuddly little creatures seem to be finding their way into pet shops up and down the country. The fact is though that owning a meerkat is not like just having a rabbit, these are slightly more complex animals and far more expensive to look after. So first of all let’s look at price.
How Much Is A Meerkat?
So if you are looking to buy a meerkat then it is probably going to cost you somewhere in the region of £1000 or say $1600. Our local pet store had two of these on sale and for the pair it would cost you £2500, they were not available on their own as the shop wanted to sell them together. Obviously If you are serious about buying one then shop around and make sure you are getting a decent price. You also want to make absolutely sure that the meerkats you are buying are being treated humanly. The sad fact is that some pet shops are just seeing this craze as an opportunity to make a quick buck and some animals are being kept in some very poor conditions.
If you can find a genuine seller of meerkats who knows their stuff and keeps the animals in good sizeable living facilities then you should be fine to consider buying one. As we said the price for one of these animals is quite high, these are not simple run of the mill pets and should not be treated as such. So you can not or certainly should not buy a meerkat then stick it in a rabbit hutch. So how much is it actually going to cost you to own a meerkat?
Food & Living Expenses
So this is where we are probably going to put you off owning a meerkat. As mentioned they can not simply be kept in cages. A meerkat is a wild animal and it likes to burrow and dig. Therefore if you try to keep it indoors it is going to scratch everything and bite anything it can get it’s teeth into. Realistically to keep this in a humane enclosure it’s need a large outdoor area that is well protected. So obviously you need a large garden area for this to be a possibility.
Another serious issue is that meerkats are very sociable creatures. In the wild they live in groups and this is how they survive. To take a meerkat out of it’s natural habitat and keep it on it’s own is both cruel and simply wrong. If you are going to keep meerkats you need to have at least a pair, hence more expense.
Food wise these are not overly expensive to look after. You can feed them pretty normal things and you should not have to worry about cost. Another issue though is the vet. Meerkats are classed as exotic animals, so very few vets will be trained to deal with them. The ones that are will charge much more for their services, hence if your meerkat needs a visit to the vet it will seriously cost you.
Are They Realistic Pets?
The simple answer to this question is no. The fact is that meerkats are wild animals, they thrive in groups. Unless you have a very large outdoor enclosure and can afford to dedicate a serious amount of time to looking after these animals then you should not consider buying one. The fact is many people will ignore this advice, they will simply pay the money and take home their happy new meerkat, unaware of the suffering them will cause the poor little creature.
However, there is no denying that meerkats are extremely loveable, affectionate and cute animals. If you do have the money and the time to look after them properly then they are sure to really bring a lot of joy to your heart. Now you know how much a meerkat costs you should be able to make a sensible decision as to whether or not these animals are for you. The fact is it is not really how much it actually costs to buy a meerkat, it’s more the looking after and having the suitable space and enclosure to ensure that keeping these animals in not going to be an act of cruelty. This is not a pet that should be bought on an impulse, this is a serious decision that requires thought and planning.
