Animal abuse...this is not easy to write about

My dear HubPages friends and followers. I am about to enter a subject which is very near and dear to me but which brings great sorrow to my heart. It is not easy to type these words, and harder, still, to hold the images in my conscience...images I cannot forget.

I opened my Facebook page today and there, in horrific detail, was the story and accompanying video of the violent, brutal death of a cat. This atrocity had been filmed by the villians and, apparently, proudly displayed online. This is not the first I've heard of such videos...there are "kitten crush" videos, 'crush videos' involving many kinds of small animals, mutilation, and more. Sickness pervades the one(s) capable of such acts; sickness infects those who are thrilled by the viewing of these hateful, reprehensible acts.

Many of my friends on Facebook are animal advocates just as I am. True and committed to this most difficult issue; these friends fight daily for the welfare, rights and wellbeing of our four legged friends. Day in and day out, they are in the forefront of this difficult battle...waging a righteous war against the abusive, neglectful and evil forces which, too often, find a comfortable home in the human form.

I know this kind of atrocity exists.  We read about it in the newspaper police logs, hear of cases of harm inflicted on animals during certain times of the year.  But...

Today, it hit me harder than other days. Today, I find myself thinking "better off dead." Animals, sensitive people, caring, loving beings....'better off dead' than to exist in this cruel world.

It takes a strong will and stronger character to face the ongoing ugliness of human nature. To know that, walking down any street at any time, there are those among us who take joy and pleasure in the suffering of others. And when those "others" are voiceless animals...the pain and difficulty in facing such atrocities grows with each waking moment. Although there is an intensely dedicated but relatively small circle of enlightened individuals who actually care about the 'others.' there are too few who have the fortitude to face this war with a conviction to see the end of animal suffering at the hands of the human race. It is an extremely herculean and formidable task.

No country, no culture is blameless. All share in this terrible travesty. Throughout the 'civilized' world, we have turned our backs on our fellow earthly inhabitants. We have chosen to protect our own sensitivities rather than aid efforts to end the tragedy of animal abuse.

This is the hardest battle; concern regarding non human, sentient beings. Challenging beyond belief because so many of us do not know, do not want to know or do not care about the suffering of animals. Animal rights / animal welfare and protection is a subject which either resonates with others or gives rise to the most hateful opposition.

But, make no mistake. Whether you love animals; whether you care or not, know this: There is a holocaust going on around us EVERY MINUTE of every day, week in, month out, year after year. Animals are subjected to the most heinous acts perpetrated upon them by human beings. In every field or endeavor, they are treated as 'less than,' 'inferior,' 'tools,' "things with no feelings."

A friend sent a quote my way recently. I could not have said it better: "If all the animals were to gather together to form an image of the Devil....it would be in HUMAN FORM!" (my emphasis).

I must agree. I've said it before; I've written it previously but I am still mentally, emotionally and intellectually dumbfounded when I allow myself to fully realize this:...that the human being is capable of inflicting such torture on other living creatures solely for our 1)entertainment, 2) amusement, 3) diet, 4) curiosity, 5) medical experiments, 6) beauty and cosmetics, 7) convenience, 8) rodeo, circus, zoo captivity ...the list could go on almost endlessly.

We treat animals as though they are slaves. We denigrade their status, laugh at their (supposed) mental inferiority, treat them as objects to be used as we wish. These miracles; just as we view ourselves as miraculous...so are they! How could it be any different? Their physical selves are as intricate and exacting as ours; their beauty FAR SUPERIOR, their family ties similar, likes and dislikes, fears, joy....again, the list could go on endlessly.

How have we come to this? What happened to our souls..that we allow such ignorance to continue unabated? Why is this even a question anymore?

When we can reach the place where we value ALL living beings as legitimate, valuable and deserving of their own rights; we will have taken the next step in evolution. No matter how many clever gadgets we can produce, no matter how calculating or ingenious we imagine ourselves; until that day comes that we can honor living beings equally; we will NOT have evolved...we will be spinning our wheels and going, absolutely, NOWHERE!

I urge anyone and everyone who is moved by anything I have written; please, find a way in your life to make a difference. Even if it is just talking w/a friend, adopting a shelter animal, writing an LTE to the local newspaper, reconsidering your dietary choices, joining in a rally or protest designed to protect animals....if you care at all...let this be a clarion call, my friends. These words reflect reality; and a very 'sugar coated' version of that ugly truth.

Please, let your conscience be your guide. Do the loving thing and make a difference for those who cannot speak for themselves and who are subject to our most heinous whims!

I do my best to help the stray in my area--and there are lots of them I just don't know all of them. Some are ferals, but I feed the ones that I can and take them to the vets when they look like they will not make it one more day or week. I love them all so much. Thank you for this hub. Voted up! I, too, and on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/debbie.lewisallen

Lucky,

A very touching article with so much truth. I have a sister in Virginia Beach who has a rescue operation for animals. I wrote about it once. I think it can be found on my profile. I thought the subject was important enough to include there. voted up!

Thank you EMan and Jy; yes, you told me of your sister previously....she is a special person! I wish more people would stand up and voice their disgust...even if one is not particularly fond of animals or a particular animal breed....the sadness of this situation exists and such suffering should never be experienced by any living being. Thank you all.

I know how badly you feel at the impotence the dedicated animal advocates experience everyday. The massacre is so widespread it is overwhelming to contemplate much less make a dent. This brutality, not only saddens me, angers me, but shames me. We, as human beings, are our brother's keepers, that includes the voiceless and all living beings. All the dogs I have had the honor of cohabitating with show more understanding, empathy and compassion than 98% of humanity. You are one of the rare angels in the remaining 2%. Thank you, Lucky Cats, for making lucky cats of every animal you encounter.

Hi Amy! I love your writing..even your comments are wonderful and so real. Thank you so much for caring and for KNOWING! And, for me, knowing that there are those out there such as yourself makes my life that little bit easier. Yesterday was a very very difficult one for me...when I read the item I wrote about here, I had to write my feelings and hope that, if even one person responds, I can change this in some way; even in the smallest way. I love dogs, too. I searched this new computer for pictures of "Kitty," "Biggie," "Lady," "Bandit," "Annie," "Dusty,""Scruffy," and "Brandy." They are all in the archives of my now defunct computer. all my beloved animals have been rescues. Thank you, Amy. Yours is a huge heart!!

I will use this in my Ethics class where we study AR. It will be useful and it's not just me talking, it's others as well. Most students are dumbfounded by cruelty and think cases are isolated. If only.

Well, it's nice to meet someone else who shares our love of kitty cats and who is only going to rejoice when I tell them we have eight beautiful darlings, all of whom came to live with us! Here's the story....Buffy originally came from neighbors who were going overseas, she is now 14. Next came Baby, a little ginger kitty who turned up on the doorstep one day, then came Tommy, a friend that Baby bought along! Next came Sammy, another neighbors (but a different one from the last) then came Suzie (Sammy's sister) then came Suzie's kittens Lilly, Spotter and Vader. In amongst this Suzie had another two litters of kittens (5 in each litter)who were all fortunately successfully homed. This is what happens when people (my neighbor) are irresponsible and don't get their cats de-sexed!!! We eventually had all the young cats de-sexed at our own cost, two boys and four girls. It cost a fortune but now we can enjoy them knowing there will be no more!

I am not a cat person but I admire people who loves cat the way I love my dogs... There is one stray cat the I started to feed, and I feel delighted whenever I went out of the house bringing his food and he was meowing... It's like I am having an affair because my dogs run after cats, but I kept on explaining to them how fortunate they are coz I take care of them,, anyway, this stray cat is so at home with left overs, you think he will eat a real cat food if I give him one?

Jackie, Daylight and Maria...thank you so much for your kind and positive comments and for caring enough to help the little animals who have been fortunate enough to have found you. Saving one animal makes a HUGE difference in population control of (sadly) unwanted kittens/puppies. Daylight, it is amazing that you plan to use my words in your Ethics class...that is astounding and wonderful! And Jackie..."ain't it the truth?" We have an animal sanctuary here...didn't mean to have quite so many but they just started appearing...and one lead to another and so on. I am so happy for your kitties that they have you. Maria..you will fall in deeper and deeper love with your little rescued kitty. We just can't help it. BTW, I have 6 dogs, too...all rescued. Bless you all and thank you from the fullness of my heart.

Thank you Jillsama...don't you wish and pray that there were more like us around. The suffering and neglect, abuse and mistreatment of animals just tears me up! You write so beautifully...keep on keeping on! Like ripples in a pond, our work will spread. Much regards!

This has to be the most heartfelt, truthful, sincere, beautiful, most special hub I have read. Your words echo my thoughts completely and Im so very glad to have met you here. I truly look forward to reading more of your hubs. Thank you so much for sharing this hub, my heart aches with yours.

Thank you erthfrend. Yes, we have 'chosen' a very difficult path. Loving and caring about/for and empathizing with animals is often misunderstood and disrespected. But, we EXCEPTIONAL humans find each other and gain strength and carry on. thank you for being the wonderful person you are for animals. We are one and the same when it comes to realizing how very important and deserving and equal are other sentient beings on this beautiful planet.

Such a heart felt request for action. As high end mammals, we pride ourselves on conquering our enviroment, making advancements in technology, being the alpha in the animal kingdom. However, most of the strides we've made in studying ourselves have come from studying animals. We're not much different from them, except for one one indisputable truth, we have a penchant for cruelty.

It sickens me to know that some of our kind take pleasure in the torture and destruction of animals simply because we can. Some may say that animals have no value, and that we shouldn't spend time and resources stopping these unspeakable acts. If nothing else, we should care because these individuals, once they no longer derive pleasure from these acts often move onto doing the same to humans.

You don't need to be an animal lover to find these actions disturbing, all you need to be is a healthy, conscious, well adjusted individual. We need to do more to expose these actions, and find ways to make it difficult to get away with this abomination.

Kathy, you have support and friends. All you need is to ask.

Voted up and every way except funny. I became a vegetarian 4-5 months ago, but will eat something with meat or fish about once a month. Did volunteer work for Tri-State Bird Rescue in DE(wild birds), Clarion PAWS, Inc. in Clarion, PA(feral cats), and K9 Partners for Life(socializing future service dogs) in southeastern PA.

Hi Beyond Max...thank you SO much! Well, I am humbled...and my heart is on my sleeve...over this topic. I saw your profile pic and read your comment to another hub and felt, immediately, that you are a kindred spirit. BTW...I am doing Song Bird Rehab w/the local Wildlife Rescue group in my area...we feed "nudies," "fledglings," "neslings," injured birds of all ages with the goal of returning them back to their natural habitat. It is so rewarding! Tiny birds, larger "babies..." a great experience. I do appreciate and value all animals. Thank you for such a fabulous comment .Kathy
