12 "It's Me, Harley" (a puppy's tale)
My life started
It’s Me, Harley
Hello everybody. Let me introduce myself. My name is Harley. I am a miniature Australian Shepard and I was born on August 31st, 2009 in a litter of 8. My dad’s name is Doc and mom’s name is Hope. They have longer names I was told, but dad and mom are all that matters to me. I was born with 4 brothers and 3 sisters. My first few days consisted of only two things that I cared about, maybe three. Mom’s ninny, eating and sleeping were all there was to life at that time. It really felt nice when she would lick me, but I remember the urge for food more, mother’s milk to be precise.
There was a period of time when all I could do is smell and hear what was going on. I just know that when I found a ninny I had to hold on tight or else something would push me away. I always knew when mom was there and that thing that kept pushing me away from the ninny. (Of course I found out later, that was always any one of my brothers or sisters.) Every once in a while my dad would come see me and I could smell him. I could feel him nudge me with his nose.
Then I woke up one morning and all of a sudden there was something hurting my eyes. Then faintly, very faintly at first, there are things, strange things, moving around and I don’t just smell or hear them. It’s a new sensation. Then I sense my mom and she tells me that I can see. The first thing I can really see clear is my mom. Wow, she is beautiful. Then I realize that these other things are my brothers and sisters. And they’re almost as cute as I think I am. Now I was actually able to see my dad when he finally came to see us again. He looked so big and strong.
There are these two really big things and one that’s not quite as big that are always on there two back legs. Mom told me they were humans. They take care of us and keep us safe. The female human is nice and helped us to be born. She has a man that is nice too. Then there is the smaller one that is the boy pup. At that time she let me know that he will play with us a lot. He goes by the name of Tyler. The ladies name is Angela. Mom said her name fits because she is an angel. Whatever an angel is!!! The man goes by Ron.
Then as I got older, Tyler would come and play with the puppies. He was really nice and a lot of fun. Tyler’s mom Angela was the one that always made sure we were warm and safe and taken care of. Ron was the one that always made sure we had food.
Then there was the time that Angela put us all in a basket and did something strange. She took us to a strange place. Mom told us that this was outside and the stuff we were running on was grass and those big weird things were trees. My mom is so smart. We got to run and play. Then there were a whole bunch of other puppies. I found out that I really love to run. We would chase each other and tumble and play. I found that playing with my brothers and sisters was a lot of fun. And then there was my favorite sister, Josie. She liked to help me do my most dun thing, which was to dig.
We got to do this for awhile every day. Then one day I remember my mom looking sad and I didn’t know why. As Ron, Angela and Tyler came to us mom told me to always be a good boy. There were several of us that were picked up and placed in this really weird looking room. When they closed the door and window it was small. The people entered from the other end and all of a sudden there was a noise that sounded like a great big dog growling. Then the room started moving. I was just big enough to be able to look out the window if I stood up on my hind legs. I could see mom and dad standing there next to each watching us. Then we hit a bump and it knocked me over. Once I was able to get my footing I got back up to the window, but I couldn’t see mom and dad again. Little did I know that would be the last time I would ever see my mom or my dad.
We were in this room bouncing around for what seemed forever. Then we stopped bouncing and the window opened. Tyler, Angela and Ron were finally taking us out of this little room. They placed us on the ground and it was a good thing because I really had to go to the bathroom. Everything looked different. I looked for mom and dad but I couldn’t see them anywhere. Everything even smelled different. After a while they started placing us all back in the little room. Before I knew it, we were bouncing around again. I was really sad because I didn’t see mom or dad. We went like this again for quite a while. Then it was starting to get dark.
After it was dark for awhile the room stopped bouncing again. Once again the window opened and they were taking us out of the room and placing us in the round pen, again just in time to go to the bathroom. Only this time there were some strange people standing around. They came over and were ooing and awing over us. There was this one tall strange looking man that picked me up and making a fuss over me. Remember, everyone is strange looking to me because I haven’t seen very many of these humans. I do have to say that this man seemed very nice and he held me in a way that made me feel like he really liked me and made me feel warm and safe.
This man and Angela talked for a little while then he put a thing around my neck and something attached to that. He put me on the ground but I couldn’t go anywhere because of the thing around my neck. They gave each other something and the new man picked me up. Angela, Ron and Tyler were scratching behind my ears. Then the new man was walking away from them with me in his arms. Again, not realizing it, I would never see any of them again. The new man carried me over to a black thing and placed me inside on a big red pillow. I curled up on the pillow and tried to sleep since I wasn’t bouncing around anymore. The only problem was, this man was making all kinds of noise. He sounded a lot like a sick dog in pain.
After being in the dark for a period of time and on this pillow we came to this place and he took me out of the black thing. He said that this was my new home. He took me inside and put me on the floor. I looked around and I could see there was no mom or dad. I thought, “How can this be home? I don’t even have anyone here to play with.”
He said the first thing he was going to do is give me a bath. He said I smelled because one of my sisters got poop on my back at the stop where he picked me up. He put me in this thing and got me all wet. After he was done he dried me real good. The bath did feel good after bouncing around in that little room with so many of us for so long.
After a couple of days I found out that there was a special place outside where I had to always go to the bathroom. I remembered the last thing mom told me, and that was to be a good boy. I tried very hard to do as she said. I did have a couple of accidents inside when Greg, the new man’s name, had to leave me alone for a longer while than usual.
OK, I have more to tell, but that’s going to be in another session. I have a very long trip to tell about and what Greg and I do for fun. I believe Greg has something to say so I will let him take over for a little while now.
How this came about.
Hi, my name is Greg. I am a big fan of Australian Shepherds and have had one before. My dad used to have a farm and always had Aussies. They are great dogs. When I decided to get one last year, I had to get a Mini Aussie. I live in a mobile home community and they have a height limit for the dog’s size of 14 inches. I searched the Internet and visited several of the breeders’ web pages. I came across this one called “Saddleback Mini Aussies” and looked at all of their puppies. www.saddlebackminiaussies.com They had a video posted showing the puppies playing with background music like “Who Let the Dogs Out?” and “Puppy Love”. I saw Harley and fell in love with him right away. They are located in Susanville, CA. I was going to make plans to drive there and pick him up but Angela let me know via e-mail that they were coming to Southern California for Thanksgiving. That was only a few days away so I said I would meet them in Ridgecrest. When I met them they had 8 or 10 puppies with them that other people were meeting for pick-up.
There is more to Harley’s story and he will tell you in another hub. I will say that if I could have placed an order for the perfect pup, I couldn’t have gotten one more perfect than Harley. He is as close to a perfect friend as I could ever hope for.
