Parting is such sweet sorrow

When spring’s foliage begins to show

I’ll free my grasp;

I’ll let you go

While summer’s days brightly glow

I’ll free my grasp

I’ll let you go

As autumn leaves fall from the bough

I’ll free my grasp

I’ll let you go

Through pouring rain

Through blinding snow

I freed my grasp

I let you go

My love is strong

Strong enough to know

The time has come

To let you go

But, I will not forget you.

Dedicated to all those so very loved ones who have passed through this life; my life. Who have graced my days with their delightful presence, who have brought smiles and tears to my eyes. Forever and a day…

I will not forget you.

We lost our sweet companion, Basil, a fabulous all white long haired gentleman who lived to be 22 years old. A foster cat whom we took in two years ago, we knew, after only a few months, that he would be a permanent member of our family. He left this step in the progression to pure love, on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

Such a beautiful tribute. In the images you can tell that each one had a personality and distinct character traits. I know people have fond memories of their pets, but very few can pay tribute to them in prose like you. Beautiful..

Kathy this is so touching ~ I absolutely love your tribute to Basil and all who have enhanced our lives, filling our days with a unique bond that is forever.

My sister's cat, also a very distinguished fellow named Basil, died early this year after a long bout with cancer.

It is never easy to lose a pet that has been a part of your life but this dedication puts those feelings into perspective allowing us to enjoy their essence indefinitely. Thank you for sharing! Up, useful, beautiful!

All your cats are beautiful. So sorry about Basil. We have a long haired mostly white cat named Levi Jones.

We love him but he is not a hugger like you Basil.

Kathy, I can feel your love for cats all the way down to me. They are such unique pets, each and everyone with his/her own personality. I still mourn the death of my two cats many years ago. They were so adorable. What a beautiful thought: "He left this step in the progression to pure love..." You will always-always treasure the memories you have made with him.

What a lucky group of beauts! Each one finding their way to you, Kathy, to enjoy wonderful lives they would never have had, if not for you. Basil is such a handsome little man, obviously completely in love with you. He would never had 22-years of fun, food and love without you. You are pure love, Kathy. I am proud to know and call you friend.

Hi Lucky Cats! You have shared with us a part of your life, via the tribute to your companions and in the process, enriched ours. Thanks so much for sharing this and the beautiful poem. May Basil rest peacefully.

Hi Kathy,

So very sorry to hear about the loss of your dear Basil. He certainly loved you and like you said gave the greatest hugs...just like our Peaches. Great photos of all the lovely pets who have spent some precious time with you. You enriched their lives as well! Beautiful hub!

Hi Peggy W. So glad to see you here. And, I am so very belated in my reading and replies and recognition of all the wonderful things you've been writing...and so many of my HP favorites whose work I have had so little time to read and comment on. Thank you for the sweet words; yes, Basil was a dear one and very much loved. Peaches! I don't know if I've already told you that we, also, have a Peaches...she's black and white; what is sometimes called "cow" cats. Very sweet little girl. I am so behind; I hope, soon, to be able to catch up, somewhat. I shall make an extra effort to stop by your many incredible articles. Kathy

Ah, Mr Basil reminds me sweetly of Jake and I share your sadness. Wow, 22 years is a long life of much love after being rescued by you, dear one.

Voted UP & AB. Hugs, Maria.

Hi Mar! yes, it is very hard to lose a sweet animal but, as we know too well; their lives are so much shorter than ours and, well, it is something we just accept because of our love for them. I know you understand this so very well. Thank you, as always, for your friendship and support. Kathy

beautiful poem. I love my dogs so much and it sucks that I will outlive them. Thanks for this moving tribute to our furry companions!

Simply beautiful and bitter sweet. There is an old country tune called, "To all the girls I've loved before" I believe its Willie Nelson , but I used to sing to myself, "to all the pets i've loved before, who traveled in and out my door....

Hello PDX and KellyPittman...so pleased that you can relate and do understand the love for our companion animals..they are my life, this is for certain.

PDX...it DOES suck that we outlive them...in the big picture..they are with us for such a short short time.

Kelly, I do know the song you refer to..and I love that you have rearranged a few words to honor your beloved pets..I'm RIGHT THERE with you and PDX!

Thank you so very much for your kind words. Kathy

PDXKaraokeGuy..I agree with you...I shall see all my beloved companions again..I plan to lay on the ground doing 'snowangels' while they purr, and nudge and tug at my heart. Thank you for knowing that this will happen, too. Kathy

PDXKarokeGu...we're on the same page, my friend. You are doing so very well here on HP's...and I can't wait to have the time to sit (in ONE PLACE!!!) and catch up on all your fabulous writing. Thank you for the visit!

indeed lucky cats. It can be hard to keep up with all the great friends and writers here on hub pages!

Hi PDXKarokeGuy...first of all, I really like the photo/profile pic.

Thank you for always leaving sensitive and empathetic comments.

I fear, there is another little beloved furry friend who has just been diagnosed w/squamous cell carcinoma...on her sweet little nose and deeper regions...severe and extreme surgery (removal of most of her nose) is an option...one we have decided not to inflict on this dear senior kitty...Candy Cat...a recent rescue kitty who is estimated to be anywhere between 12 and 15 years of age (by our trusted and caring Veterinarian)...she is up in years and has a prognosis of possible years left so, we have chosen not to subject her to such invasive measures...always a difficult decision. I imagine her life, before we found her in the streets, in the sun and heat, withered and sickly...on death's door...was pretty bad...thank God she'll have comfort and love during her remaining year(s).

Lucky Cats, sorry to hear about your sick kitty. as someone who's allergic to kitties, I have a hard time with them but I know they can be loved just like any other pet. Please keep me posted and know that your cat is loved and that you're making the right decision.
