Cats and Kittens Get Upset Stomachs From Drinking Cow's Milk

Is Cow's Milk Good for Cats to Drink

It may not be such a good idea to give cats and kittens, cow's milk. Cow's milk may upset the cat's and kitten's digestive systems and will give them diarrhea. When I adopted my cat the vet told me not to feed her (she's a female) any cow's milk, because it would upset her digestion and give her loose stools. I made sure that I didn't give her any cow's milk. Should you give your cat cow's milk? It would be better to get first advice from a veterinarian, who is an expert on small animals like cats. Cats should always have fresh, clean water to drink, instead of milk that comes from cows.

Milk that is formulated for cats and kittens can be found in the pet food isle at stores like Shopko, Wal-Mart or anywhere where pet supplies are sold. Milk that is meant for cats and kittens is the better choice, rather than giving them cow's milk. Milk that comes from cows is really meant for their calves, although humans drink it, too. A well-balanced diet (100% complete) and fresh, clean drinking water are the best for all cats throughout all of their life stages.

Cats and Cow's milk

The only time a cat should be given milk is when there is nothing else to feed to the cat. In emergency situations, it would be okay to feed the cat cow's milk. Otherwise it is not a good idea to feed milk to a cat. Pet departments in stores should miilk that is formulated for cats and kittens to drink, which is a lot more suitable for cats than cow's milk.

Hi Gail641! I agree with you and the wise advise given you by your Veterinarians. Never feed cats cows milk..you are so correct when you suggested that, surprise!, cows milk is meant for the cow's calves! Who would have thought? Anyway, I like this initial hub of yours and plan to follow your future work. Thank you for reminding all of us that it is never a good idea, except in case of emergency when nothing else is available and one has just saved a starving feline, to give cow's milk to cats or kittens. Thank you. UP Useful and Interesting...

Indeed, cow's milk is not intended for cats. They might both begin with the letter C, but they are still entirely different animals!

Hello, gail641,

Thank you for the advice you provided in this post. Over the years, I have always given my cats a little cow's milk but I will not do that anymore.

When I adopted by cat, the vet told me not to give her cow's milk, because it would upset her stomach. So, I don't give her milk at all. Thanks!

Thank you. I think that Bessie is very beautiful, too. She is a nice cat. She still has her front claws. I thought since her front claws are a part of her, I would never have her declawed. She seems to be doing ok. Your cat Smoky Mama and her kits are very beautiful!

Your welome, It sounds like you have really good names for your 3 cats. The vet I got my cat from said that milk from cows will upset the cat's digestive system and make cats sick. Thanks.
