Animal cruelty, Willie Nelson Saves Horses, Americans Against Horse Slaughter For Horse Meat

Slaughterhouses for horses have been banned in the United States since 2007 when Illinois passed a prohibition. Prior to 2007, horse meat was a significant export to foreign countries such as Italy, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland, Mexico, and France.

Although horses aren't legally being slaughtered for human consumption in the United Sates, tens of thousands of them are being transported each year to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. The transportation and treatment is brutal, causing the horses great suffering.

Not to mention, meat from slaughtered horses could sicken or kill people who eat it because of antibiotics and other medicines that are given to the horses. The thought of people eating horse meat sickens me.

Until the United States Congress passes legislation banning horse slaughter into law, American horses will still continue to fall prey to this detestable foreign-driven industry. Without a federal law the threat still remains that horse slaughter plants can set up shop in US states that have no law against it.

Efforts are underway to pass the "American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" (HR503 and S311) which would establish a permanent ban on horse slaughter and the transportation of horses to slaughter for human consumption.

Horses have played an important role in our American society. It is unthinkable for most Americans to consider eating horse meat. Horses have been our companions and are American icons.

Horses have allowed us to use them for transportation whether on their back or pulling wagons, they have plowed our fields and ran in races. They have been there for us humans through all mankind. Now it is our turn to help them. We all must do our part to end the cruelty

How you can help save the horses

The passing of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act would put in place a permanent and immediate ban on both the slaughter of horses in the U.S. and the exportation of live horses for slaughter abroad.

You can help by signing the petition in the link below urging United States Congress to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act to end the horrific practice of
transporting and slaughtering horses for human consumption in other countries.

Saving American Horses

Black Market for Horsemeat?

Hundreds and maybe thousands of our American horses are stolen each year. Horse theives are making quick money stealing our horses and selling them to underground killer buyers and slaughterhouses for quick process. They are killed and processed quickly so it would be hard to trace. This is a disgrace!

Willie's family is involved in protecting horses

Amy, Willie's daughter and Raelyn, his grand-daughter,  will be special guest speakers and cast in Saving America's Horses - A Nation Betrayed. The Nelson family has been actively involved in saving horses for approximately 10 years. Amy and Raelyn have been working in their state of Tennessee and federally on behalf of horses. Willie, Amy & Raelyn will be speaking at different venues.

Thanks for being an advocate for our wild horses and burros as well as bringing awareness to the slaughter of thousands of domestic and wild horses and burros. it is a tragedy that many Americans are unaware of...

Our wild mustangs and burros will soon go the way of the buffalo if we turn a blind eye. Please contact your senators and congressmen to stop the genocide of this great American Icon...the horse. They have done much in our nation's history and deserve better. Government has been persuaded by rich cattlemen and the oil industry to systematically remove these animals from their protected lands, so private corporations and government can use it for the grazing of millions of head of cattle, and oil exploration. Thanks again for your writings.

I love horses they are beauitful I don't think they should be slaughtered for foods unless some one is straving.Even then I don't think I could. The horse has always been a helper animal to men and women it should be respected.

Did you really claim this? "Not to mention, meat from slaughtered horses could sicken or kill people who eat it because of antibiotics and other medicines that are given to the horses. The thought of people eating horse meat sickens me." Do you actually think that they do not test the horses/meat for potentially harmful substances before shipping it out for human consumption? What about beef, pork and chicken? Don't they carry the same risks? What research do you have that supports this from sources that are not anti-slaughter animal rights groups? What do you propose should happen to all the would be slaughter-bound horses? What happens when all the sanctuaries are full? What happens to the horses whose owners cannot afford euthanasia or rendering fees? Have you considered any of these things or did you write this Hub based on your personal feelings?

It is people like yourself that are well-intentioned but very misled, that will lead to the downfall of the horse industry and the species as a whole if you continue to advocate anti-slaughter. Please seek out research done by credible organizations such as the AVMA, USDA and APHIS, and reevaluate your views on this topic.

It's like we're on the same wave length. Did you know that PETA agreed with President Obama's decision to lift the ban on slaughtering horses in America? Horses deserve to go to permanent families and loving homes not slaughter houses. As for the unwanted horses it would be more practical to send them to Horse Sanctuaries.
