The Chihuahua- Things You Need To Know

The chihuahua is a toy sized dog and is best known for playing the role in the old Taco Bell commercials. This dog is one of the oldest breeds on the American continent and one of the smallest in the world as well. The size as well as the personality of this dog are reasons why people often seek out these high energetic dogs. Their personality is probably the number one reason why I have fallen in love with them.

Behavior Or Temperament

The chihuahua is a courageous dog and very lively. They can make for a great companion. They are usually a proud breed, adventurous and enjoy all the attention they can get. So give them your affection! However with all of these being a part of their personality this dog also needs proper human leadership, otherwise they can come down with small dog syndrome, where the dog believes he/she is the pack leader.

They become easily attached to their owners, therefore will be very loyal. It is important to socialize them and train them like any other dog. Keep in mind that training a chihuahua may prove to be difficult. They are intelligent and learn quickly but they require a firm but gentle hand.

As for being around children it is advised against having them around younger children. Not because of their attitude, this isn't the case at all. It is because if you treat a small dog differently than you would a large dog they could become untrustworthy. Not just that children could be too rough on a very small chihuahua.

Just because this dog is so tiny doesn't mean that he/she doesn't need to exercise. Exercising your dog can provide great mental stimulation. These little guys need a daily walk like any other dog. If this doesn't happen a large amount of behavior problems can start to exist and I don't think we want that. Not only that, walking your dog can prove to a great time for you and your dog.

Grooming/Health/Living Conditions

The grooming of this dog depends on what kind of coat your dog has. If you Chihuahua is the one with a smooth and short hair then a gentle brushing from time to time or even wiping down with a damp cloth will be fine. The longer coat Chihuahuas should be brushed with a soft bristle brush. Both of them should be given a bath about once a month. Make sure not to get water in their ears. Check their ears regularly and keep their nails trimmed. As for shedding Chihuahuas are an average shedding dog.

Health problems of this dog include rheumatism, slipped stifle, colds and gum problems. Eye problems include corneal dryness and secondary glaucoma. This dog does gain weight easily so you must maintain their weight and keep a watchful eye on their diet. While they are puppies they easily get broken bones and any other kind of accidents so keep a close eye on them. As well as to make sure they stay away from poison for these dogs do poison easily due to small size, this does include chocolate. Some of these dogs do wheeze and snore. These dogs are prone to stress, especially if owner treats them like babies.

They are great apartment dogs however that does not mean they can exist in a tiny area. Don't keep them caged up all day. Give them space! This dog loves warm weather and hates the cold. So when it gets to the colder seasons of the year make sure to keep your dog warm.

These dogs live up to fifteen years, they can prove to end up being a great friend, almost a best friend if you let them into your heart. Just don't treat them like a baby just because they are tiny in size because their hearts are huge. They came from Mexico long ago and have dealt with many mistreatment due to their size. If you want to get this dog just because they are small, don't. Do it because they are so lively and energetic. They are playful and caring and are willing to make you laugh at any moment.

My mom recently lost her beloved chihuahua just five weeks after her husband passed away. He was a loyal friend and companion to both of them for many years. I'm a cat person myself, but if I were to ever get a dog, this is the kind I would get.

I am sorry to hear about that nybride710. I wish your mom better days. To loose a husband and then such a loyal friend would be very tough. All the well to her. Cats are great as well. I like them too. Thank you for reading.

I like chihuahuas, especially when their owners are big scary guys on harleys!

Even better stephaniedas! Because those are the ones who are less likely to treat them like babies lol. But dogie/owner couples like that are quite the sight to see.

Sounds like a common trait a lot of these dogs have. They may be little but they surely don't act like it. :)
