Where to buy beta fish?

Updated on December 10, 2012

If you are in the market for a new betta fish there are some things you should know before you decide on what and where to purchase. There are many factors that go into selecting the perfect betta fish as well as a morality factor. In this article I will hope to aid you making an educated and informed decision on your new fish.

Pet Stores

While pet stores are very convenient places to buy betta fish, they are not always the best option. Most stores have poor living conditions for bettas placing them in small jars or plastic containers. Just because beta fish are hardy fish and can survive harsh living conditions does not make it okay for them to live like this. Also, fish can be in stores for months even years before selling so you don't know if your so called "new" fish is really new or already aged quite a bit. You might think you want to help these fish get a better life and better living conditions, and that is definitely an admirable thing to do, but buy purchasing from big box stores you are just giving them funds and supporting what they do.

Pet Store Betas and Breeding

Just a side note. If you are attempting to breed betas then I would not recommend buying a pet store beta. Betas have a short window of opportunity during there young life where they are optimal for breeding, and the betas at pet stores are usually not very healthy and past this window. If you are going to buy from a pet store, know when they get new betas and try to get them as soon as possible.

Local Breeders

You can find local breeders online on places like craigslist who breed and sell betas. These fish are of a much higher quality and can be used for breeding purposes if you are keen on that sort of thing. These fish are also a lot more beautiful and genetically perfect then those that you can find at a pet store. This is also a great way to support local fish breeders who really care about the fish they breed instead of just trying to make a fast buck.

Aqua Bid

This is probably the best way to buy a betta and if I was in the market for one this would be my choice. I bought an Aquabid betta a couple of years ago and the fish was really beautiful and much better than anything I could have gotten at a pet store. Aquabid is a bidding site where you can place bids on fish from all over the world. You can get beta fish from their original homeland of Thailand or from the United States. Not only are these fish some of the utmost quality, it also gives you variety so you can get exactly what kind of fish you are looking for. Betta fish are very unique and have many different breeds. Unlike pet stores who give you one or two choice as far as the type of beta you can buy, Aquabid gives you the option of selecting exactly what fish you want.

Bettas are truly magnificent creatures that can really bring joy to a room and your life. Not only that, but they are really easy to care for and maintain. I would suggest at least a five gallon tank if you are planning on keeping a betta. Because they are such hardy fish they are subject to much abuse in the way of living conditions and we can do our part to help stop this by seeking other options besides pet stores. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed.
