Why keep fish?; Why have a beautiful aquarium?
Why fish?
Fish keeping is something that has been around for thousands of years. The ancient Chinese practiced it as early as the 900's A.D. when they began keeping Carp for ornate purposes. Some even report that the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians may have also kept fish during the B.C. time period, but the reasons why are unclear. It may have been for decorative purposes or merely as a food source. Regardless, the benefits of fish keeping had been recognized well before modern times.
Fish may not have the same playful nature as a canine or feline companion, but what they lack in engagement they make up for in elegance and peacefulness. Few things are as relaxing after a long day of work or studying as laying down watching vibrantly colored fish float effortlessly around a beautifully decorated aquarium. Whether you enjoy the large communities of small freshwater fish like guppies, and tetras. Or the fascinating colors of saltwater clowns and tangs. There is a style for everyone.
Here are some starter items that would be ideal for a new fish keeper.
Taking it to the next level.
Fish keeping can be a simple hobby, with little effort required after the initial set-up and purchase. Or it can be taken to the extreme, with very complex systems that require multiple parts all working together and in sync. These more engaging systems, though much more work and also quite expensive, often result in a simply stunning aquarium that would be well worth the effort.
Fish tanks range in sizes from 5 gallons, there are smaller but this is the minimum that I would recommend, to several hundred gallons. No matter the size of space you wish to fill, there is an aquarium out there for you. No longer do fish tanks come in only a simple rectangle shape, now they can be found in hexagon, bowfront, and even cube styles just to name a few.
Starter pets
Fish keeping is an excellent way to teach a child responsibility and care for another living being, without the burden that a four-legged friend can come with. Fish tanks require about one hour of maintenance each week, for water changes and glass cleaning. Of course they need to be fed at least three times per week as well.
