Some people love small dogs and others like them large. I think this is a personal choice. However, larger dogs may be from certain breeds that have certain personalities that you might not find pleasing. For example, they may be territorial, protective, unfriendly, etc, and thus need a stern master. Due to size issue, it might be challenge handling or taking care of them. Think also in terms of space and finance to feed, groom and take care of their health. Most smaller breeds of dogs on the other hand, are more friendlier, they like to cuddle, playful and so on. It also takes less to take care of them.
Both can make equally good pets, as long as you take the time to properly train and care for them. Which size and breed you choose should depend on your situation and what you're looking for in a dog.
I like smaller dogs. They are cute, friendly (usually), and are easier to carry around and take care of. I just don't want a big dog that takes up so much space and can run me into the ground.
There is no answer to this question. It all depends on what you are looking for in a pet. Do you want a lap pet or do you want a sturdier dog you can take hiking? Do you have children? If so, I'd steer away from something fragile like a small Papillon, Are you active? Get a sporting breed such as a Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever. If not, get a small dog that can sit around with you and run around the house - though they still need walks! Does a very large dog appeal to you and do you have a very large vehicle? do you mind drooling? If you have a large vehicle and don't mind drooling, get a St. Bernard or a Newfoundland.
A large dog makes a better pet for me but I think the choice for a pet based on the size depends on several factors that are tied to individual preferences and available resources to take care of the pet.

The vet says no walks, no visits from people or dogs (because she is a puppy at heart and gets very excited about company), no...
