I am in the process of writing a hub on how to find a good obedience trainer. Absolutely the best way to train your dog is to find a very good positive reinforcement obedience class. Good dog training is in the details. Properly timed cues, rewards, etc. are vital. Even how you hold your hand if you lure is vital. Is your palm up or down? How high should your hand be? How do you fade rewards?
Be sure to avoid trainers that use punishment or training collars as this is very "old school" training that we did 20 years ago. Newer, positive methods have been proven to provide a more solid foundation and a better bonding experience with your dog. Some mild corrections, such as mild voice corrections, may be implemented on dogs whose personalities show they can handle them. But some dogs' personalities will wilt under any punishment, and these can easily be trained using positive methods.
Go on line and read about clicker training and positive dog training. You might Google Karen Pryor and read some articles on her website. She has some great information about the importance of positive dog training.
Mostly, HAVE FUN!!! Training should be a game. Your dog should LOVE it and find it the absolutely best time of the day. Incorporate play, giggling, toys, treats, fetch or whatever your dog loves to do. My training with my dogs is all about a GOOD TIME, and their response to this type of training is amazing. Whether treats, toys or other rewards are present or not, they are eager, happy workers because commands = FUN TIMES!!! :)
