Any experience out there with the new topical protections for dogs?
There are some relatively new products on the market which when applied to dogs both controls fleas and protects them against heart worms. My Yorkie will not eat the Heartgard...no way!
Wayne, wrap the Heartguard in some cheese or lunchmeat, most dogs will chow down on it. I haven't tried any others. As for flea protection, Dusty (50 caliber) has a hub that you might want to read on that subject.
Tried all that...he picks up on the smell matter how I mask it. Thanks much!
I know, some will find it and for those, I use the method the vet taught me. I have never had a problem getting a pill in a dog. I may have to try two ways but that is it. I use Brewers Yeast for my dog for the flea protection and he never has fleas.
There is one product called Revolution which I don't recommend. Some dogs were still coming back heartworm positive with it. I would, however, recommend using Advantage multicare by bayer. It does both fleas and heartworms. The price is a little higher, but then again you are getting a flea and heartworm prevention in one.
The Advantage product was the one we were considering...long term experience with it. We were fearing the potential for kidney damage.
Hmmm have never seen any problems with that before.
If kidney damage can be a concern....it's scares me that most Vets prescribe and recommend this!! Now I need to do some research.
I am a veterinary technician and have never heard of or seen any dogs getting kidney disease from this. I have heard of other side effects though, but they are usually less serious than kidney disease.
Wayne.....I have two 4 yr.old fur babies. Since day one, I have used the advantage-plus drops on them both (monthly) I buy it directly from their Vet. They have never experienced a single issue. This is not to say that some dogs may.....but you can only find out by trying. Anytime they have had to take a pill or capsule, I wrap it in cheese or some meat and my grub-gulpers, swallow it in an instant. If your Yorkie has table manners and does not gulp down his/her food, you might not get away with this...but again, you can try. Good luck. We spoil them....it's our fault!! lol.
Our Yorkie, "Cash Money" seems to have a very fined tuned nose for Heartgard no matter what it is wrapped in. His sister, a Shih Tsu, name "Callie" eats it like candy. Cash can sniff the stuff out through a steel wall! He is very paticular!
You can always get him a job with the cops canine Dept...sniffing out drugs!! After all, with a name like cash money.....he should earn his own keep!
Hi Wayne:
I am not 100% sure about some of the newer products for dogs in the way of topicals to protect them from fleas, lice etc... But I have a good friend who is a vet and will check with her during the weekend and see if I can get a few names for you. In the meantime I am putting some finishing touches on a topical transdermal cream article I am working on. These transdermal topical creams for humans, offer an alternate solution in having to take pills orally, for those who suffer from pain and a variety of other conditions. I should have the article completed by the weekend. It may have some pointers in reference to pets as well. And once again will keep you informed about those topical for the dogs.

@JIbowden....Thanks so much for commenting. I will watch for your hub! ~WB
