I just want to add to this answer by saying that the fish will definitely need a filter, and preferably a tank at least between 10 and 20 gallons. Goldfish are supposed to have 2 gallons a water per inch of fish. They grow to be six inches.
A filter is indeed a very important accessory, especially as the gold fish gets bigger. I don't know if there's a size limit on gold fish, because believe it or not I once caught an actual gold fish in a river that weighed at least 5 pounds.
