What does 'pet friendly' mean to you?

Most people seem to think pet friendly is about dogs (and only dogs) being allowed into public places.  I have asthma and allergies to animal hair so I'm not all for this. But, aside from that, if a place goes pet friendly shouldn't that include all pets: reptiles, insects, birds, rodents, etc? Does your version of pet friendly include a large snake for instance?

I love dogs and appreciate a hotel that allows them, but you make a good point about allergies - I am terribly allergic to cats. A pet friendly place should restrict certain rooms, perhaps a floor, to family critters. Snakes, insects birds - I don't think so!

A pet is a pet. How can it be restricted to just dogs, or even dogs and cats? Snakes might smell funny but they are as safe as having a dog in a store. On the plus side, snakes don't have fur so they might not be a problem for allergies.

I have only ever explored pet friendly options for hotels and parks. I was not aware of much else as I have no need. I do know that in most shopping malls, restaurants, etc, only service animals are permitted. I have also recently heard that the airlines have had to do some changing up because the broad list of service animals cannot be limited by which ones can fit on a plane! Interesting question!

My favourite bookstore, a store I have spent a lot of money in over several years, has become unofficially pet friendly. I wrote to protest but they chose to have animals in the store anyway. I'm still pretty angry about it.

To me if a place says "Pet Friendly", then that should include all pets. If they intend for it only to include certain pets, then they should have a sign up stating that. Keep on hubbing  smile

Pet friendly...hmmm...to me that represents a hotel, motel, park or place of business which welcomes your pet to 'said place'. To me, it is not just about accepting dogs, but cats as well. I don't qualify reptiles or bugs as pets, but only because I do not care for them, especially snakes! I would not presume it would include exotic animals or large ones either, such as horses, cows, etc.

I think it's up to each individual business to define what "pet friendly" means to them.  It's not up to us - the public.  So if a business decides that snakes aren't allowed in their business, that's their decision.

BTW, I stay in hotels with my dogs about 20 weekends a year.  Most that allow dogs do have defined "pet" hotel rooms.  Each hotel (or chain) has their definition of "pet friendly."  This may limit the types of pets, the number of pets and the size.  Many hotels I stay at only allow dogs under 20 pounds, and only one or two in a room.  They also then determine where in the hotel the dogs are allowed and where they may go for walks.

"Pet Friendly" is not a term defined by federal law.  Therefore, it's up to each business to define the term for themselves.

"Pet friendly" to me means they welcome all pets. If they didn't accept all pets, they should specify either by saying "dog friendly" or "leashed pets welcome" or "small dogs welcome" or "furry pets welcome." Too many places I've seen have a sign that says "pet friendly" but they don't take into account the myriad of pets people can have. No snakes allowed? Then you should probably change your sign, buddy...

We have had a pet calf, lamb, rabbit, bird, duck, chickens, guinea pig and a dog .
The only one I would have considered taking anywhere was Jack- the dog .
I couldn't imagine turning up at any place with any of the other pets lol !
Need to be specific for those who do like to take their snakes/unusual pets places !!

from what i know, pets are not allow into hotels or shopping malls. Eventhough if it allows, pet friendly should be pets that doesn't hinder other people such as hamsters. Small and cute, doesn't make any sound.
