Our dogs scratch constantly. We have eliminated wheat, beef, chicken;they take flea meds. What now?

We have tried several combinations for fleas, tics and heartworm. We also use sprays for hot spots including a cider vinegar one. We are very frustrated. We also have two cats which are treated for fleas as well.

Have you had them checked for allergies? The first cat I ever had was allergic to fleas. Even with using flea sprays and such, the fleas can still occasionally get on them and cause an allergic reaction. They may also have dry skin. It sounds weird to say they may all have allergies or dry skin, but those are the two things I can think of to have checked.

Some dogs have allergies to whole grains. Our Cookie lost nearly all her fur from scratching and biting until we switched to a No Grain dry food. The one that has worked amazingly well for us was the Nutro Natural Choice No Grain formula. We chose the Venison and Potato flavor.

The difference in her coat and in her scratching level is astounding. Even our vet couldn't believe the difference. He said, "She's gorgeous!"

She still has some hot spots under the arms but overall, much improved almost immediately after switching from corn meal based food.

It didn't happen to my dog but I had a cat who scratched until she was raw and bleeding.  She was scratching out chunks of fur.  I tried putting her on the high-end food (more expensive better-for-you food), eliminated wheat and anything with dye.  Spent a fortune on food but she kept digging.  I finally bought the cheap stuff.  Cat Chow.  Her fur grew back beautiful, healthy and soft and she stopped scratching.  Go figure!  hmm

Take your dog to the vet.  Here is some information on how the doctor tests for different allergies.
