Then the betta started building a bubble nest and chasing all the other fish away. I had to return the gourami to the store. Just wanted to share that. Gouramis do resemble female bettas so I think it was a case of mistaken identity.
Fish typically know the difference between species. Guoramis are typically peaceful fish, but they are prone to killing smaller fish and long-tailed fish. Aggression is also a concern when the tank is overcrowded.
The bubble nest is just a sign of happiness, not necessarily of breeding.
