What Is A Miniature Goldendoodle?

Designer dogs are all the rage, and the "Doodle" is one of the most popular. The "Labradoodle" is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle, While the Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. The Doodle makes a great family dog, they usually don't shed (or shed very little) , and are, for the most part, easy to train.

So, what the heck is a Miniature Goldendoodle? Have some breeders actually crossed a Golden Retriever with a Toy Poodle?

Why yes they did!!

Why Choose A Designer Dog?

A designer dog is a cross between two "purebred" dogs, or between a purebred dog and a designer dog, say a Golden Retriever and a Goldendoodle. While many people will say these designer dogs are not breeds at all, and according to AKC they're not, they make great dogs without many of the genetic problems of their purebred parents.

Here's the thing...breeders of purebred dogs are held to strict standards of what can be bred and what can't, and the end result is quite a few purebreeds with "thin" lines. There is also a problem with many breeders breeding too close, ie. a male with a daughter, neice,grand-daughter, etc. There's a reason this is discouraged in the human species, and it holds true in the dog world too. When the available pool of breeding pairs is thin, then all kinds of genetic problems creep up, and these are passed down from generation to generation.

And so, the designer dog was born!

Miniature Goldendoodle- A Doodle In A Small Package

As we mentioned above, a Miniature Goldendoodle is usually the result of breeding a Golden Retriever with a Small Poodle. If you are not familiar with these two breeds, you can click the links below to learn more about them:

Designer Dog or Purebred Dog?

What do you think? Would you buy/adopt a "designer dog" (like a Doodle), or are you a purebred kind of person?

Would you consider a designer dog for your next dog?

  • Yes
  • No. It's gotta be a purebred.
  • It doesn't matter. Designer dog, purebred, even a mutt will work

What Will My Miniature Goldendoodle Look Like?

Determining the eventual size, weight, and hair type of a Miniature Goldendoodle when they are puppies can be tough, as they can vary wildly from litter to litter, and even litter mates can turn out quite differently. AKC (American Kennel Club) defines a "Miniature" as a dog weighing 25 pounds or less, and 15 inches or less in height at the withers (the highest point of the shoulder).

While you can be pretty sure that a miniature wont be the size of a regular doodle, the retriever genes seem to dominate sometimes and you could end up with a dog in the 30 pound range, and/or with long legs and therefore much taller than 15 inches. Then again, some miniature goldendoodles will end up in the 15 to 20 pound range and not even close to 15 inches in height.

About the only thing you can be sure of is that the Miniature Doodle will more than likely be smaller than the average Standard Doodle.

As far as Miniature Goldendoodle hair goes, well that can vary wildly too. A Goldendoodle's coat can range from fine and barely wavey, to thick and curly. On the latter, the curls are usually "loose", and we have yet to see a Goldendoodle with tight, poodle-like curls.

Adopt Your next Dog!

If you are considering a new pet for your home, then consider this...there are literally MILLIONS of homeless dogs and cats that need a good home, and will give you years of love in return. . If you are looking for a certain breed, or a designer dog, they are available too. Yes, adopting a pet can be a serious pain in the patootie, and the process you have to go through might make you think you are applying for a job at the CIA, but the good folks at your local dog rescue are just trying to assure that once adopted, the dog will stay adopted and in a loving home. No, you can't just walk in and pay your money like the pet store at the mall, but then again, you won't be supporting your local puppy mill.

Adopt a Pet!!!

Have You Considered Adopting A Dog?

Will you adopt/rescue your next dog?

  • Yes.
  • Yes, I have adopted/rescued before.
  • No.
  • I will buy from a breeder

Great lens. I visited the site you linked to with the list of hybrid dogs but didn't see one that I have owned and it is known as a Pompek (pomeranian mixed with pekinese). You may want to add it if that is your site. I love dogs so truly enjoyed your lens.Gave you a squidlike.

What an adorable breed! I have to admit, I was a bit of a purebreed snob (German Shepherds) but that has all changed since my sister got her Puggle! All dogs are beautiful. Thank you for this.

I liked your lens. My dog looks like a terridoodle, if that

s the word for it. Dogs are great but the hair can be an issue.

I have to say I wasn't very keen about 'designer dog' mixes, but your point about them having hybrid vigour and not suffering from the genetic problems of inbred pure breed dogs has changed my mind. And they look very cute!

I like the idea of a designer dog, because of the gene pool thing - eewwwww! People who breed their purebred dogs from the same family line are irresponsible and money hungry. What other explanation could there be? Very disturbing, and a good reason to support dogs like the Goldendoodle - which are too cute for words anyway!

I'm a fan of doggie rescue and know a few goldendoodles who ended up in rescue due to "operator error" - people didn't know they bark, didn't know they'd be . They're great dogs. Blessed.

When my fiance and I eventually do get a dog, we were thinking of a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle, however, I didn't know that minis were out there! Might be something to think about! Great lens!

Thanks for the lesson on these cute pups. I think all dogs are designer made, by the Master Designer the Lord. Sometimes I man just takes things a bit too far and the animal gets the short end of it.

Had a great time with this lens! Thanks! - I have a friend with a smart, loving Labradoodle, so don't get me wrong when I suggest you might get a little laugh over an article I wrote about some cross breeding experiments that went "horribly wrong." Here's the link.

If you're uncomfortable w/an unsolicited link, check out my lenses, several about cats and dogs - Thanks again for your time and expertise - sincerely, Ted
