The Right Harness for Your Dog

Every dog can find a perfect fit

There's no such thing as a single perfect dog harness. But there is a perfect harness for every dog. That's why Golly Gear carries over 30 different harnesses - different styles, colors, materials and functions. We're always happy to help you find the right one for your pup!

Most veterinarians now recommend harnesses, especially for small dogs. Using a collar, particularly with a dog that pulls on leash, may cause the dog to suffer a "collapsed trachea." You can mitigate the danger by using a well-fitting harness, especially one that avoids the dog's throat and distributes the pulling pressure all across the dog's chest.

Many styles of harnesses are available today: Vest Harnesses, Step-in Harnesses, Standard Harnesses, Hook-and-Loop Closure Harnesses and Unique styles to suit every dog - and owner!

Vest Harnesses

The vest-type harness is increasingly popular, it's functional, adorable, and easy to use! Generally speaking, these harnesses do not adjust at the neck, but have a tummy strap around the dog's girth that can be adjusted for a perfect fit. A vest harness should fit low on the dog's neck - at the "collar bones" to shift pressure away from the dog's throat and trachea.

Step-in Harnesses

Step-in Harnesses offer the best of all worlds - security, comfort, and style. A wide range of sizes are available, and most are fully adjustable for a custom fit for every dog. Step-in harnesses are easy to put on the dog, as the name implies. Just put the dog's front paws in, bring the straps up over his back, clasp the buckle and go! For added security, most have two rings for the leash attachment, so even if the clasp should open, the harness is held together with the leash. This is a particularly good choice for dogs who won't tolerate anything going over their heads.

Standard Harnesses

These are the traditional harnesses that have been around forever - because they work! The harness slips on over the dog's head, a girth strap is brought around underneath the dog's chest and clips into place. Simple and efficient. The updates to this harness include terrific colors, enhancements and style. Classics are always in style!

Hook and Loop Closure Harnesses

Where would we be without Velcro®? Hook and Loop Closures are common on shoes, clothes and now dog harnesses! These harnesses use industrial-strength closures, keeping the dogs secure, and allowing the incredible ease of use we love. These harnesses are a blessing for people who have difficulty with small, hard-to-grasp pinch clasps.

Different harnesses exitss for different applications. The harness can be used for older dogs or dogs that escape the traditional strap collars. Can also double as a seat belt in the car. Tags can be added to any loop. Most likely, your pet is microchiped. Is the harness more humane? Depends on the dog. If you have a dog that pulls and can't breath, hacks a lot and is extremely excited, then a harness is better. However the dog harness is very uncomfortable. You might want a halti which straps over the nose.A properly trained dog will enjoy a loose collar.

Great hub!

My dog (Baby) is a Pekehound and she's rather small. I've always used a regular collar for her when walking her, as she isn't much of a puller and tends to stay right beside me.. However, I didn't realize the damage that could be done to her by using a regular collar, or that harnesses were vet recommended especially for smaller dogs. I think I'm going to have to go out and purchase one for Baby.

:)
