It's not only a starter sewing machine, and for most people, even intermediate users, the Brother CS6000i would do great for almost everything you would ever need it for.
For those that want to move to more advanced techniques, you can eventually buy up when you've exhausted the features that come with the CS6000i. Most people won't need to, but there are some things it doesn't do, so in those instances one would need to buy a more comprehensive sewing machine. Most won't have to, depending on their sewing goals.
Let's look at the Brother CS6000i more closely now.
Brother CS6000i Features
The Brother CS6000i comes with 60 stitch functions, 1-step buttonholes that come in 7 styles, and 9 presser feet which can be quickly snapped on for immediate use.
For those larger projects, a detachable over sized table is included so you can arrange your fabric or quilt in any way you need to for maximum and effective use.
As mentioned earlier, this sewing machine is portable, and weighs in at just over 16 pounds. Although not featherweight, it can easily be handled by those without a specific physical impediment. So if you're working on a project with friends, or going to a class to learn, it isn't a problem to take you sewing machine where you need it.
For those residing in some countries there will be one disappointment, as the machine is recommended not to be used in countries that don't support 120V AC. That is even the case where an adapter is used. Unfortunately, this 110-volt sewing machine won't be available for you if those are the circumstances you face.
Basic Features of Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine
Getting your project going with the Brother CS6000i sewing machine is quick and easy, whether you're threading the machine, threading the needle, or bobbin winding.
Threading the CS6000i
To thread the CS6000i, there is a diagram printed on the side of the sewing machine which will help you get the job done quickly.
For bobbin winding there is also a diagram on the machine which shows you where you specifically need to put the thread.
Automatic Needle Threading
For needle threading there is no need for concern or frustration, as there is a lever on the side of the CS6000i, which when touched, will automatically thread the needle for you.
One thing to understand concerning the thread used with the CS6000i: it needs to be of higher quality. The cheaper threads don't work well with this sewing machine.
Even More Brother CS6000i Features
There are a lot more features to enjoy with the Brother CS6000i, including the way it lights up a working area so you will have no problem seeing what you're doing when engaged in your project.
The last thing we need to be concerned about is the ability to see our work when doing a job. You won't have that problem with the CS6000i. It also makes it easy to work on fabric with darker colors.
For those smaller specialized projects, such as sleeves and cuffs, there is a free arm built in to the machine, making it easy to work on them.
Stitch Speed Slide
Another great feature is the included stitch speed slide which allows the user to adjust sewing speed very easily and efficiently.
LCD Display Stitch Selector
One of the more popular features of the Brother CS6000i sewing machine is the LCD display stitch selector.
You simply press a button to choose the desired stitch, and the screen immediately shows you that particular stitch.
It also tells you which presser foot you need when changing stitches, so you don't have to stop work and refer to the manual.
Not only does it do this, but it really simplifies it. You are given the shape of the stitch as well as the letter of each foot presser needed. Foot pressers have the letter engraved upon them.
For those with a little experience it's quite possible you may not need to use a serger with the Brother CS6000i in order to prevent the fabric from unraveling or fraying.
How you prevent that is to use an overcasting stitch with the overcasting presser foot.
All you have to do is trim the seams and then overcast it. It's not hard to do and eliminates the need to buy a serger. Zigzag stitches also work to protect against fabric unraveling.
Stitches to Fix Wardrobe
For those who have some terrific clothes they want to extend the life of or alter, there are a number of stitches included with the sewing machine for that purpose; 27 in all.
Along with those already mentioned, and among the overall 27 coming with the sewing machine, there are buttonhole stitches, basting stitch, blind hem stitch and a triple stretch stitch; stitches that will probably be used the most by sewers.
I say buttonhole stitches in the plural because there are seven different types of buttonhole stitches you can choose from. These different stitches are used according to the weight of the fabric you're working with. Some will work with lighter fabric, others with medium-weight fabric, and others with heavier fabric.
Blind Hem Stitch
For those wanting or needing to hem pants, skirts or sleeves, leaving no trace of your work, there is a blind hem stitch included for the purpose of keeping your work invisible.
Triple Stretch Stitch
The triple stretch stitch is used to strengthen seams.
For those working on a seam which you may have to adjust to generate the exact fit you want, here is the basting stitch. This stitch helps to hold the seams where you want them temporarily in order to make the required adjustments leading to the desired fit.
The nine accessory feet are the walking foot, spring action quilting foot, overcasting foot, monogramming foot, zipper foot, zigzag foot, blind stitch foot, buttonhole foot and button fitting foot.
Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine
The major challenge for the Brother CS6000i is being sure to that you're working with quality thread. Have that in place and most of the learning curve and challenges are taken care of.
It could also take several tries when learning to thread the machine, but it isn't difficult, and once you quickly figure it out it's easy as a breeze.
A secondary challenge would be if you're not used to a more computerized sewing machine. If you're completely without experience there, it will take a little getting used to, but once you master it, you'll wonder why you didn't take the step of buying one earlier.
The Brother CS6000i is one of the most popular sewing machines out there, and among the least expensive when comparing the features and benefits associated with it.
Most people are thoroughly satisfied when making this their sewing machine of choice.
