Why use oil pastels?

Oil pastels allows the artist to learn blending, mixing and shading much easily as compared to crayons or pencil colors. Learning oil pastels or soft pastels is fun for children because they can learn to blend theses using fingers or cotton or tissue or just by using the color itself. These are bright and gives very nice end result. So i highly recommend oil pastels for children of all ages.

Step by Step - Learn to draw the scene first

Draw few rocks on both the right and left sides bottom of the page.

Draw sea weeds on both the rocks, may be straight like grass or wavy.

Draw few corals between the rocks to cover the space left.

Draw one starfish and a crab on the rocks.

Now draw a clown fish in the center of the drawing. Clown fish drawing is really simple.

Draw one big angel fish in the middle empty area top and some baby size angel fishes behind the mummy angel fish.

Now draw one octopus below the clown fish and one jellyfish anywhere.

How to draw a clown fish, octopus, angel fish, jellyfish, can be learned from the video.

Once all this is done outline the drawing using a black sketch pen or you can use green sketch pen for sea weeds as per your choice.

Rub the drawing after outline for neatness and to remove pencil marks.

Learn to color your drawing using pastels

First color the rocks using yellow ochre and use brown to shade on one side, then use ochre to blend these two colors. At last you can do yellow on the lighter area and little black over brown on the darker portion.

For the sea weeds fill light green first, now put a little dark green on one side and again blend both the colors using lighter green shade.

On the left side sea weeds use purple and lilac and mix both.

Now use orange on the corals and red on one side. Now mix both colors using orange. You can try circular movements to mix the colors if you fail to get the desired result with spreading.

Now fill orange in the clown fish leaving each alternate space white since clown fish is orange and white. Add black on its fins or can do black with sketch pen.

On angel fish use medium yellow for the body and black for the texture. Do same on the baby angel fishes.

Fill peach color in the octopus and brown strokes on all around the face. Add brown on each of its tentacles and mix both the colors using the lighter shade which is a peach here.

Color the jelly fish pink and use rose pink for shading on both sides of its body.

Once all this is done color the background light blue. Use Prussian blue to show wavy strokes of water at few places and can also add white on the bubbles.

Finally your underwater scene is ready with some basic understanding of mixing and blending of oil pastels. Please refer the video to understand even better.
