Finding Free Crochet Patterns for Twelve Inch Squares

The first thing that most crocheters crochet is a small granny square, but making Afghans from small squares can become a little tedious, and large squares are very effective. Twelve in squares are the answer. Patterns for little Afghan squares are everywhere but patterns for large squares can be somewhat difficult to find, but there are twelve-inch square patterns available on the internet. Twelve-inch squares look very effective in a sampler Afghan.

Large crochet pattern directories save crocheters time by grouping links to free patterns in one place. Crochet Pattern Central (CPC) is the most easily navigable of the online free crochet pattern directories and has many patterns for twelve-inch squares. You will have a very happy time looking at these links as there are some very attractive patterns, “Around a Flower” is very pretty, Big Ribbon Square is lovely, Cornucopia of Buttons is very different, Tulip square is delightful. There are cable squares (yes you can do cable crochet), filet crochet squares, textured squares and picture squares.

Crochet bloggers and designers often offer free patterns on their web pages. Auntie Elle’s Blog offers the Odyssey square. Marlo’s Crochet Corner’s eleven Aran square patterns (scroll down the page) would make a gorgeous Aran sampler Afghan. Chris Simon’s page has several 12-inch square patterns ranging from easy patterns through intermediate, to the more challenging. The Crochet Dude’s blog features a handsome twelve-inch square, which would make an ideal man’s Afghan. There is a Star of David square at Crochet, Gotta Love It, which offers both pattern and graph for this unusual square.

Ravelry has hundreds of free crochet patterns for twelve-inch squares as well as ideas as to how crocheters can use them for items other than Afghans Experienced crocheters would enjoy the challenge that Waldo’s Puzzle presents. Many crocheters would enjoy making the Happy Hearts square and it would make a super gift Afghan. TheUnholy Square would be a useful square for either an Afghan or a pillow, or why not make a matching set? Blooming Lace would make a beautifully feminine Afghan. Basket of Berries is delightful. Stained Glass is a very effective square. You could crochet Star Overlay in several different colour combinations to make a very effective Afghan. Wheel Lattice is an easy square perfect for lighter Afghans. Op Art and On the Huh are very different squares, ideal for modern decor. The Rainbow Heart is a colourful cheery square. It would make a lovely Afghan or pillow suitable for many people and rooms. It is difficult to pick the best from the many delightful patterns for 12-inch squares at Ravelry, there are so many attractive squares.

Twelve-inch squares lend themselves beautifully to sampler Afghans. They also draw the eye, and you can do many amazing things with large squares. The more solid squares make smashing pillow or cushion covers and an Afghan with a matching pillow made from large squares looks striking. Free crochet patterns for twelve-inch squares are more abundant than you might imagine and are an excellent way to use up those odd skeins and balls of yarn remaining from other projects. Large squares inspire the imagination, and draw the eye, why not investigate them today?
