Crochet Hat Patterns
Crochet hat patterns online are easy to find. As a matter of fact, there are so many, it is hard to sift through all of them to find the one you are looking for. I usually have a style in mind when I start searching, and then I like to add my personal touch with a crocheted flower, fancy edging, or clip-on ribbon. Below I have searched online to find the easiest-to-follow and most attractive or unique crochet hat patterns that I hope to use over and over again.
At the end of this hub, I have included video tutorials for the single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, and crocheting in the round. These are all created by the Lion Brand studio and I highly recommend their tutorial videos for learning new stitches.

Tips for Making Crochet Hats
- Save leftover yarn. It is perfect for making a crochet hat. Stripes of color are very attractive, if you have small amounts, and one hat can take as little as half a skein of yarn to make, depending on the type of stitch used.
- Finish your hat by crocheting a final row of single crochet stitches, or add a fancy style of yarn to give your hat a unique look.
- Use clip-on ribbons or flowers that can easily be removed, to embellish your hat. I've even seen clip-on butterflies.
- Use soft yarn, that will not cause your skin to feel itchy, or sew a band of fleece to the inside edge of your hat. This will keep you warmer and allow you to use yarns that would otherwise be uncomfortable against your skin.

Simple Crochet Hats with Flowers
Every year I learn something new to crochet. This year, it was how to make flowers. I think they are beautiful, versatile, and surprisingly really easy to make. Hats with large flowers, like the one above, can be worn with the flower in different positions, giving completely different looks. I like to wear it with the flower on the side, in the very front, and in the very back, depending on what I am wearing, and how I have styled my hair.

Different Crochet Stitches
There are many crochet stitches, however, nothing intricate is necessary to create a beautifully-made hat that you will be proud to wear. The simple single crochet stitch is neat and tight, making your hat very warm to wear. It will not stretch as much as other stitches, so it is important to get the size correct. It will take longer than other stitches, and will use more yarn, but the ending results are well worth it. In most crochet hat patterns, single crochet stitches are often used in the last one to four rows, creating a more finished look.
Double crochet stitches are looser and will use less yarn than single crochet stitches. They do go much faster, and create a lot more stretch to your finished hat. Triple crochet stitches, shell stitches, and open chain stitches are more intricate, requiring a closer eye as you work. The results are impressive and fun to try-out on crochet hats.

Tr-Color Cloche by Caron: This beautiful thick crocheted hat uses a cluster stitch throughout. This gives the hat texture and a professonally-made look. By using different colors to create a striped pattern, the hat becomes more versatile and appealing, drawing attention to the clusters.
Crocheted Abba Hat Pattern: This trendy hat uses a combination of chain and double-crochet stitches. It is a quick hat to make, taking less than an hour for most. This is a nice hat for looks, but not one for warmth, as it has open spaces throughout. The pattern suggests using a thread of gold along with the yarn, giving it a sparkle effect.
Amelia Crocheted Hat Pattern: This adorable crochet hat pattern has a flower pattern as well. It is made with double-crochet stitches. The accompanying flower pattern suggests using a button center and pin to attach, making it more versatile.

Double Crochet Tutorial
Head Huggers: Crochet Pattern 11: A striped pattern gives this hat an interesting effect. It is made using double-crochet stitches. The yarn type suggested is sports yarn, baby yarn.
Brigham One-Skein Hat: This delicate, lacey crochet hat uses a variety of crochet stitches, the shell stitch, picot stitch, cluster stitch, and V-stitch. While the stitches are more difficult, the hat is much less dense than other patterns, decreasing the number of stitches needed. I would suggest attempting this pattern only after making a few hats with simpler patterns first.
Shell Brimmed Cloched: This very attractive hat uses double-chain stitches in the crown circle and shell stitches for the brim. It suggests switching hook sizes for the brim. Although this is simple pattern to follow and an easy hat to make, the hat looks like it would be difficult to make.
