Pumpkin is more than just food

Although fall signals the arrival of winter, I love the beautiful colours of the Indian Summer and eagerly await the arrival of pumpkins. They come in a variety of shapes and colours and if you live in a rural area, you may be lucky to come across a pumpkin exhibition like the one I saw many years ago in the Canadian Okanagan Valley. If you are a pumpkin lover like me, you will definitely appreciate the beautiful pictures of these amazing fruits. Yes, I'm not making this up, pumpkin is actually a fruit and not as generally believed, a vegetable.

Pumpkins are extremely versatile as a cooking ingredient and they can be integrated into just about any meal from breakfast to dinner. All you need to do is google “Pumpkin Recipes” and you will get about 58,200,000 results in 0.32 seconds - more than you could possibly cope with in a lifetime. So what are you waiting for, you better get cooking...

Nothing goes to waste and even the seeds are pressed into a delicate gourmet cooking oil with an extremely rich and nutty flavour. Roasted seeds offer a healthy snack solution or can be used as a crunchy garnish for salads or soups.

But the use of pumpkin is not only limited to cooking. I’ve seen some pretty creative examples which I would like to share with you.

And by the way, thanks to a reader I've found out that you can even make pumpkin cocktails - just google "Pumpkin Margarita Recipes" and you'll find enough ideas to keep you creative until at last Christmas.

I find it disgusting that you would attribute that quote to Laura Bush - she never said such a thing and is not the type of woman who would. Shame on you for not checking the quote.

One of my favorite foods and is a super fruit, very nutritious. Now I know I can make a boat with it....lol.

Moonlake, e-Healer & Cardisa: Thanks for your comments. I'm glad that you enjoyed this hub and the pictures. In a way I dread the arrival of winter but fall is always such a colourful time with lots of fun festivals that I tend to forget about the darkness and the cold.

tsadjatko: Sorry for offending you. I took this picture a couple of years ago outside a shop and found it very funny and some readers seem to agree with me. By the way, Bush is a very common name in Nova Scotia (there is even a Bush island and a Bush cemetery). I never implied that the Laura Bush who made this quote is the ex-American First Lady. Whoever this Laura Bush is, she has a great sense of humor and after all, laughing is very healthy.

That quote is all over the internet attributed anonymous - so some feminazi was dissing Laura Bush and you should have researched it before furthering their agenda...but I guess you don't care about civility either.

Hi novascotiamiss. Loved your hub and your quote ex the mysterious Laura Bush. A good sense of humour, I've been told, is the product of an intelligent mind, and I'm glad you're furthering the humorous agenda! Up, interesting, funny and sharing the hub!

This is great! And just in time for the season. I am trying to figure out how to make pumpkin Margueritas!

CyberShelley: I was already getting seriously worried that my pumpkin hub was going to lead to a full blown political war and am glad that other people share my sense of humour. Even my husband found the quote hilarious (and not feminist) and he was the one who took the picture.

Gourd. You covered every facet of this under-represented veggie! I adore pumpkin--all squash, really--and now can add: blue to its possible colors. Opens up a whole new realm of holidays, really! Red, White & Pumpkin come to mind right away!

I will hit many asterick thingees for this, Miss Nova Scotia, and think you did a bang up job on this eye-opening HUB. :)

Gourd...what a fun post. I have seen bits of that pumpkin regatta I am pretty sure--here and there...TV? Musta been.

Makes me feel positively Halloweenie!! I didn't know it was so big in Canada but how cool. It is a lot different here in the US than it was when I was growing up...

Also--I replied to you about the soup thing? but I might have deleted it--cuz i reply, and it looks general, and then gives me this option to reply in a little box--so i copy and paste and delete and then can't tell if i answered at all...

I am as backward on the HUBS as a backward Spinner! ;)

But i enjoy them evenso. :)
