Steve.....This is really great. I enjoyed scrolling through these....besides loving to see the posters.....I really enjoy checking out the cast for each movie...and seeing the names of some of our very best, classic actors, in the history of Hollywood movies!! Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, Mutiny on the Bounty.....and a few others, bring back some memories. Makes me think it may be time to view these oldies again....thanks, Steve.......UP ++ and shared

As always a joy to read...as Effer said, so many memories. It is also so interesting to see the posters from other countries. This collection of posters has some of the truly epic films that have been made over the years!

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting.

Paula, Eiddwen, Mary, thank you for the comment, votes and kind words, very much appreciated.

I needed a break from all the monsters and undead horrors I was writing about the past three weeks. :)

The 1960s produced a far more interesting selection of historical epics than previous decades and they were highly rated too.

Highest rated movie on this page is Lawrence of Arabia, lowest rated is The Last Days of Pompeii.

Thanks for posting!

A few of these I have seen. Many I remember as being shown but did not see. Thanks for this bit of movie history.

Thanks for commenting dahoglund.

There are a couple up there I can't remember if I saw or not - Genghis Khan and Last Days of Pompeii. And I've seen parts of the Russian War and Peace not all of it, it's 7 hours long!

Random thoughts as I go through your latest hub...(1) I have never heard of Sergio Leone's The Colossus of Rhodes before. (2) Just saw El Cid a few months ago...I have this friend that is a huge fan of Chuck's so I thought I would check out ....lol. (3) Lawrence of Arabia is one of the greatest films ever made (4) Taras Bulba?...so Brynner went from the classic Magnificent Seven to this? (5) That actually looks like a young Clint Eastwood in the Kings of the Sun poster (6) You mean Stephen Boyd actually made movies after Ben-Hur (7) Zulu....the movie that put Sir Michael on the map (8) Another Chuck movie....imagine that...lol. (9) When looking at the movies that have been the biggest box office hits...Doctor Zhivago is one of the few that I have not seen (10) Wow another Boyd film and two more Chuck movies...those Ben-Hur dudes are everywhere (11) Peter O'Toole should have won an Oscar for Lion in Winter...he was even better than Hepburn and she got an Oscar for the movie (12) Not impressed with the Italian Lawrence of Arabia poster.

Another fascinating look at the 1960s movie decade....tons of great movies and lots of great posters.....keep them coming...voted up and awesome and interesting.

Thanks for posting Bruce, enjoyed your detailed examination of my newest hub.

Stephen Boyd played one of the most memorable villains in movie history, Messala in Ben-Hur, and than strangely enough he was offered nothing but hero roles. He died from a heart attack in 1977 aged just 46.

El Cid is one of the best epics ever made, Martin Scorsese is a big fan and sponsored a complete restoration of the film a few years ago.

What is interesting about Peter O'Toole's role of Henry II in The Lion in Winter is that he played the same role just 4 years earlier in Becket and was nominated for that too. How many actors get Oscar nominated for playing the same role twice in films, not many.

I'm curious why the Italian poster of Lawrence has the image of the lead character in black and white and looking unfinished, are they trying to tell us something or was the artist in a bit of a hurry? :)

Hi Steve. Another great set of posters and some great movies. When I was in high school our class went to the movie theater to see "War and Peace". It was shown on two successive days as it was broken into two 3-4 hour parts. It was mind-blowing to see the armies marching toward each other over the hills from horizon to horizon-- much like it really must have looked. They used something like 100,000 extras-- most of whom were Soviet army troops. This, of course, was decades before CGI and really showed what early 19th Century war looked like. I've never forgotten it. I know they used parts of it in a later movie-- I think it was "Waterloo" or something-- especially the infantry squares defending against cavalry attacks. Thanks for reviving some great movie memories.

Thank you for the comment and anecdote David, much appreciated. I saw those battles in War and Peace and I was gobsmacked too, though I saw it on a TV screen. I have a friend who's very interested in the Napoleonic Wars and has collected books and documentaries on the subject. He had a copy of Bondarchuks epic movie, he showed me some scenes of battle and I was impressed but I've never seen the entire film.

Flora Robson one of the great English character actresses of all time. In her portrayal as the Dowager Empress Tzu-hsi, here Miss Robson is astonishingly alike actual photographs of the real Empress herself. I'll wager Flora enjoyed the male courtiers perform the extremely humiliating 'kow tow' before her enthroned persona.
