Introduction

Who doesn't love taking photos? I mean really. Notice I didn't say 'good' photos, but photos. Some of us take better photos than others but the bottom line is we all enjoy taking photos. Next to taking photos, editing them and having something to show for it is what we do and why we take photos in the first place! While my title says making photos funny I would have to clarify that and say we're making photos fun and funny.

In 2005 a site called bighugelabs.com appeared on the scene. A great concept come to life....a free place you can make your photos into magazine covers or posters, mosaics...a fun place for you and your pictures and the best part is, its free...free to use for your designs but prints will of course need to be paid for.

BigHugeLabs

First off, and important to most of all, you remain the owner of your photos. Of courser there are disclaimers and limitations of liability to be read before using BHL, but that is true with anything you use. There is a privacy policy stating the company does not share your information...always good to know. BHL is an open source software, meaning it is free and it's code is free. You can use it without registering but if you want to save photos to the site you need to register.

Now on to the stuff you really want to know. What can you do with BHL? The list of selections includes: Bade Maker, Bead Art, Billboard, Blog Head, CD Cover, Calendar, Color Palette Generator, Cube, FX, Favorite Finder, Favorite Surfer, Flickr DNA, Framer, Gallery, Gift Center, Guess the Title, Hockneyizer, Jigsaw, Letter from Santa, and much more!

Okay, you've had a little background, now let's take a look at what we can do!

Captioner

Some more fun with BigHugeLabs
Some more fun with BigHugeLabs | Source

The Captioner option can be lots of fun! You choose the picture, you choose whether or not you want to add a speech or thought balloon and what you want it to say...and how many of them you want to add. You can also add a 'stamp' to your photo for that real comic book feel! You fill in the boxes then hit the Create button. Simple enough!

The next screen is where you assemble your picture. The bubbles you created are on top of the page and you can move them wherever you want them in your photo. If you chose the 'stamp' you can now see them on the bottom of the page and move the ones you want where you want them. If you're not happy with the results, just click the Edit button to make changes. When you have things the way you want them, click the Finish button. If this sounds confusing, hopefully, the photos I've added below will clarify it for you.

Let's look at another option for your photos, Framer. "Framer: If you frame it, it's art". BHL says, "Choose from tons of unique frames to spice up your photos. Choose from stamps, canvas, wood, 35mm film, Polaroid and more. Remember, if you frame it, it's art."

As it states above, your choices range from stamps to polaroids. You can of course, use photos of people, places or things, anything you want to make the outcome interesting to you.

Pop Art

I've always loved the "pop art" posters you see around the web but they are sooo expensive! Now BHL gives you the chance to make your own for free! Its fun, and like all things on BHL its easy! You can choose from three different options; single, four or nine. Its very Andy Warhol! A nice feature on BHL is even after you've chosen your design you can go back in and edit it if you're not happy with the results. In the pop art section you can shuffle the little boxes around to have different colors in different places. This one is so, well, Pop Art!

Poster Printing

Poster Printing really plays with your photos. There's a little difference in poster printing. You have to upload your photo then click the Next button to make your selections. You can choose from black and white to Edges styles with ten other choices in between and you can adjust the contrast and 'strength'. Probably not what you conventionally think of when you hear the word 'poster' but certainly an array of effects for your photos.

Trading Cards

I could do this all day, but I think you're getting the idea. I'm going to do just one more then wrap it up. This one, trading card, let's you do just that, make trading cards with your own pictures. There are lots of options here from the colors to icons you can add. Your text, subtitle and description are up to you as well. It can be especially fun for kids or someone you don't know what to buy for!

Conclusion

You can have a lot of fun with this free program! Big Huge Labs has lots to offer along with its ease of use. The only limit to what you can do is your imagination....use landscape photos to enhance your own magazine covers, use precious children's photos to make jigsaw puzzles...the sky's the limit. Have fun!

Mary (tillsontitan ) - I worked all afternoon on a "how-to" for posting on HubPages. Finished it OK, too. Guess what my reward was for all of that hard work...

Right !!! It was finding THIS fine article.

Thanks - I loved what you wrote. Now I have to see how much I might love BigHugeLabs.com. Any doubts? Not here, Mary.

Gus :-)))

It positively blows my mind what magic can be performed on a computer. Someone as talented as you, could master this all and there is no end to the "work from home" ideas. Totally terrific work here, Til.

I've bookmarked this one to come back to tomorrow and play lol. I have had some great pics, the best are always the 'bad ones'. My phone has a smile recognition where it recognizes a smile and takes photos automatically ... that has resulted in some great pics!!!!! ha ha (especially as bottoms also have the 'smile' shape .... tricky to explain though).

Shared, pinned, tweeted, up, funny and awesome.

What an interesting, unique, well researched hub, Mary! This looks like a ton of fun and while i'm far from technologically advanced - you've laid it out so beautifully - that even i am feeling confident!

I'll let you know how and IF it turns out! (lol at Brett.tesol's comment..)

Wishing you a grand 2013, Mary, Queen of Tillson - may it be everything you hope it will be - and more!

(hmmm...why can't i share, tweet, or like this hub?)

tillsontitan profile image

tillsontitan 3 years ago from New York Author

Thanks Leslie, it really is fun and you could make some cool "gifts" with these photos! You should be feeling confident! You can do anything.

Please do let me know, I know you'll have a blast.

As for you and the New Year, first I am thankful I came across you and your fierce and honest loyalties to your beliefs, second, I am honored to number you among my friends, and third, I hope your New Year keeps you coming back and keeps you healthy and happy!

Lastly, there are glitches going on in Hubville. Seems not all buttons and/or comment boxes are working....
