How to Make Necklaces: 10 Easy Tutorials
This article is for any novice searching for a necklace project that isn't too intimidating, an experienced jewelry artist interested in a quick project, and everyone in between. All of the tutorials here are for simple, easy necklaces that will come together in only a few hours or less. Almost all of the materials that you'll need for these projects are available at most craft stores.
Please note that all of these tutorials are for personal use only unless it is indicated otherwise. If you are interested in selling your necklaces, please contact the artists directly. Thank you and happy crafting!
Birds Eye Necklaces
Even if you do not have much experience with wire wrapping, don't go running from this project. The design is very simple and forgiving, and you can use just about any type of craft wire that you have on hand for it. Authentic or glass pearls make beautiful "eggs." You can also use any type of bead that has holes large enough to accommodate the wire.
Glass Tile Necklaces
I used these tutorials to make the glass necklace that I featured at the top of this article. I have not found a lot of glass tiles in craft stores, but they are readily available in all shapes and sizes online. If you get hooked on making these glass tiles but only need so many necklaces, you can also use them for magnets, thumb tacks, brooches, and more.
Shrinky Dinks Cloud Necklaces
Jenny has some of the most creative ideas for Shrinky Dinks that I've ever seen. I attended undergrad at a university with a meteorology department. I had to smile when I first saw this because I know a lot of people who would really love this idea. Whether you are a weather nut or you're like me and simply enjoy clouds and rain, this is a perfect project for you.
DIY: Shrinky Dinks
Glass Bottle Necklaces
These necklaces are very popular right now and can be as simple or complex as you like. The possibilities are endless. I've included just a few ideas for inspiration here. Search Etsy and/or Pinterest for many more options. I've purchased glass bottles and corks on Etsy and 15/32" screw eyes from a hardware store. Bottles and corks are also available on eBay. Some people choose to use eye pins instead of screw eyes.
I have written about these pendants before, but I have to include them again here because they are so neat. Washers of all different sizes are available at any hardware store and will be completely transformed by patterned paper. I love to add a little extra detail to my pendants with self adhesive rhinestones. Many people use a waxed cord or hemp to create necklaces from their pendants. You can also make a beaded rope.
Mini Books Tutorial
Tiny Leather Book Necklaces
There are several variations of this idea out there. Some people attach a jump ring or other wire loop to the corner of a book. Other people stack several books and pierce the center of them with an eye pin. There are also several different options for materials. Leather is a classic choice, but paper can work well, too. Alternatively, if you don't want to make the books yourself, keep your eye out for miniature dollhouse books.
How clever is this necklace? This project involves precision cutting and drilling with a miter box and power drill. I don't recommend purchasing these tools purely so you can complete this project, but if you have them on hand, go for it. This necklace is perfect for writers, teachers, and artists.
Faux Feathers Necklaces
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using real feathers to make a necklace. However, sometimes this simply isn't an option, due to lack of materials, or just isn't something that you're interested in doing. Alisa makes her faux feathers out of leather. As always, she puts together great details about her painting job as well as the other steps that she took to make this necklace.
Cluster Pearl Necklaces
Don't let this project intimidate you. It does involve wire wrapping, but it is a basic technique that you'll repeat over and over again. You can use any kind of pearl with the ribbon of your choice to create an elegant, one of a kind piece.
Basic Beading Lesson: Wire Wrapping
Recycled Leather Necklaces
This necklace is a great way to use up leftover leather scraps and those few odds and ends beads from other projects. The sewing does not need to be perfect. Freeform stitches will give it a whimsical, carefree charm.
