Cartographers Corner: Gerardus Mercator

Born March 5, 1512 - Died December 2, 1594, Gerardus Mercator was a Flemish cartographer, born in Rupelomode in East Flanders, and lived in Duidburg from 1522. He is remembered for the Mercator chart which was named after him.

Mercator was a builder of mathematical instruments and was highly skilled engraver of brass plates. He first produced a maps of Palestine in 1537 and then a map of the world in 1538. He also learnted italic script for engraving of maps and wrote the first instruction book of italic script puplished in northern Europe.

Charged with heresy in 1544 because of sympathy for Protestant beliefs and spent seven months in prison before charges were dropped.

In 1552 he opened a cartographic workshop in Germany and completed a map of Europe. He constructed a new map in 1569 that had parallel lines of longitude to help with ocean navigation. He produced an atlas published in 1578 based partly on maps of Ptolemy and continued to add to it as the years went on.

Mercator devised an easier way to produce globes using papier-mache on a wood mold. He would then be cut it off, and reassembled, gessoed, and covered with an engraved map that was cut into twelve tapering gores. Later they were hand-tinted with watercolor and put on wooded stands.
