Osvaldo Sales: An Artist And Role Model
Throughout our lives, we all encounter people that make us think, that make us stop and even re-evaluate everything we've been told. People like these, need not to be movie stars, media individuals or any other type of celebrity status; they need only to be... living beings. I often "tag" these people as heart-and-mind fueled people, who live off knowledge and gratitude, love and passion for life in itself. Well, I've found very few people like these in life, and today I want to talk about one of them - Osvaldo Sales.
Loved by many, Osvaldo is a passionate artist with a visionary mind. As many people have mentioned, Osvaldo is a very versatile artist, touching not only the performing arts but also the visual arts.
The Performing Artist
When you go watch a play where Osvaldo is in, you can expect enthusiasm and deep anxiety. He'll have you on your feet applauding every time he comes to the stage and leaves the stage, he'll even have you holding on to your seat anxiously awaiting his next act on the stage. For instance, this one play he did a couple of years ago, The 1920'sit was called, he played the role of a drunk policeman. Well, first of all, as the title says, the English would be a bit difficult to understand, right? I was actually hoping it would not be very long, since I have a short span attention for these things. The matter of the fact is, every time the drunk policeman would show up, everyone would show their warm welcoming. It is intriguing, because he was not even a main character or anything of the sort, yet you could see in people's body language the intense admiration.
Very recently Osvaldo tried out for the first season of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. He did not win or make it to the Top 20, however, some of the juries did in fact fight to have him on the show. And that's how he makes you feel, so connected that you must have him on stage, performing all the time. To him, life is a big stage where you have to outperform yourself and live every minute with energy and intensity, which he clearly shows through his dancing, whether on stage or at the club - he'll be on the spotlight anywhere.

The Visual Artist
Many also know Osvaldo, through his artistic talents as a visual artist. With many art exhibits in his profile, too many to count by hand, he finds joy in experimenting with the different media nature provides us.
One of his signatures is the drywall paintings, in which he does not only paint but also carves and applies many other different odd materials. In response to a curiosity, around the idea of using drywall, he once told me "I was once walking by a construction site, thinking about life, and I saw some pieces of drywall. I wasn't very sure why and how, but I just felt I could transform it into something else". He also mentioned, and I have witnessed, that artists don't always have the resources and means they need to expose what goes on their minds, and so they need to create their own resources. In his case, it started from the drywall, but it doesn't stop there. I am constantly surprised by the numerous odd things he brings home and even more surprised when I see what he does with them.
Fashion, is another visual talent he has. If you enter his studio, you can see the tons of sketches and drawings that go through his mind. Sometimes, I wonder how on earth can he store so much imagination, in that fast paced mind of his? In this industry, his signature is the bamboo mat and newspaper/magazine dresses - some of these are displayed in the photos on the sides. Again, creativity and resources is something you can say he does not lack.
A Role Model
Have you seen him on TV? Is he a celebrity?
Not really, apart from some of the short films that air on Bravo from time to time, and the So You Think You Can Dance Canada show; I don't think you've ever seen him on TV, much less as a celebrity icon. However, it is not the fame or non-fame he has that strikes me.
Osvaldo has a very charismatic personally, for which I believe if you don't know him now you'll know him at some point of your life. But, more importantly, his charisma rubs off on people, it makes you want to live life more, and better, with much more edge.
Coming from Angola - Africa, this almost 23 year old visionary, has fought to get where he is, at this moment. He's been through many difficult moments, that are bit too personal to mention here, but I can assure you not to be pleasant at all. From being underestimated, taken for granted and left behind, many things have happened to him, and yet, every single time he hits the ground, a smile full of hope and optimism forms on his face.
He does not believe in doing things just because it is safer to abide by the society we live in, even though he has paid high for it. Many call him a dreamer - majority just envy him for loving life with so much fierceness.
When I met Osvaldo, I was clearly very upset with the way my life was going at the time, frustrated and without any enthusiasm for my every day life. But Ozzy, as I usually refer to him, taught me how to be grateful for even the most annoying days I have. In one single sentence he tells me "The end of something is the beginning of another", and suddenly I realize that there's a lot more to life that the eyes can catch.
He is one of those people that you'd have more than enough content to write a book on. There are many little details in his life that could get you going on and on through tons of pages. Then you still would have to talk about him as a person, as a friend, a lover and a father.
Osvaldo might not be a celebrity (..yet..) but he clearly influences a lot of his friends, including me. He clearly doesn't stop just because life keeps on throwing fire rocks at him, and clearly, he won't let obstacles stop him from being who he is - a professional life lover.
