Queen Seon Deok and the Challenge of TV Photography

Why Queen Seon Deok?

Because everything about it fascinated me or still fascinates me... From the story, settings, to actresses Lee Yo Won as Deokman, Go Hyun Jung as Mishil, to good looking actors Uhm Tae Wong as Yushin Rang and Kim Nam Gil as Bidam. The effect of QSD is like magic that lingers to everyone who watched it. Even the Soundtrack or OST is the best. I just can't get over that "Windflower", and Bidam Song...

Before I got hooked with this drama, I was grieving for the death of my 6 years old dog Pissy, watching QSD diverted my attention, and although I still miss my dog, QSD already brought back the inspiration in me... Well hard to believe and can be exaggerated, but as long as it gives positive effect to me and my aura, I really wont mind. I am still living the real life anyway, and to admire my all time favorite actress Lee Yo Won is not a bad idea... am I alone to see her this way? of course not... many of us like her because we like the way she handled herself in every role she portrayed and she's really beautiful..

Lee Yo Won as Queen Seon Deok, I can't imagine anyone in that role

QSD's Ending Moments

Now with Queen Seon Deok nearing ends, I decided to make a memorabilia for myself, which will not make me grab somebody else's photo at the net. Too sad that when I realized about this, QSD is already in the latter part of the story. But then it's good too, considering that it is indeed a very long soap opera, I may not be able to include all my favorite scene so, concentrating on the ending will be best....

I have interacted with Fellow QSD and Lee Yo Won fans and we all have the same feelings with QSD, "We can't seem to get over it", though we were divided by Group Yudeok and Group Bideok,  it just added spice in our never ending story telling in any QSD, Lee Yo Won forum. WE all love QSD, we share and discuss about our favorite scenes.. We all enjoyed or (still enjoying) QSD into pieces, but hate the ending..... but I guess that is the secret of the story....that is why fans can get over it because all them had other better endings in minds.

All QSD Actors and Actresses are great

Uhm Tae Wong or Yushin Rang

Deokman and Yushin

The love story angle of Queen Seon Deok divided the fans that regularly watch the soap opera. I am obviously in favor of Deokman and Yushin. Their devotion for each other is almost as lasting as the world, but both of them set aside personal whims for the sake of Silla and its people... I love all the episodes showing the "Ups and Downs" of their love for one another. And watching the drama several times, I made my own analysis of their suppressed love.... it lacks perfect timing.... No question about love it's deep within them but, they just can't have the same intensity at the same time, because other priorities always got in the way or stronger emotion overwhelmed either one of them... For example, when Princess Chumyeong died, Yushin was the one determined to leave with Deokman away from Silla. He chose Deokman over his Silla, his family and his dream, but Deokman still mourning her sister's death, chose to stay at Silla, claimed her real life, and turned her back to what Yushin was offering her...

At episode 37 when Yushin decided to give up to Mishil just to save the Gaya people, it was Deokman's turned to get emotional, but Yushin was determined to save Gaya sacrificing his personal happiness and he ended up marrying Yeong Mo, Mishil's granddaughter.

That actually was one of my favorite scene... Yushin's wedding while Deokman was with Wolya and Seolji, the background music was perfect and Seolji's voice too while telling the Princess how they both (Yushin and Deokman) save the gaya people from hunger etc... I really feel for Deokman in this scene... I am a woman too hahahah..

Just like what Yushin said, Silla is the only thing that connects him and Her highness, this is because He and Princess Deokman shared the same passion for Silla and the Grandeur Dream of unifying the three Kingdom, they both sacrifice personal emotions. But in the end, the Queen decided to join Bidam in conjugal ties, inspite of doubt in herself if she is still capable of loving a person when Silla almost took all her heart away... Yushin as honorable as he is, accepted his defeat, by telling the Queen that only Bidam can give her the solace that she needs or looks for, and he even apologized to her for being incapable to give her comfort, because we all know, how Yushin unintentionally hurt the queen because of his principle with regards to Gaya People. but we all knew that everything he did, he did it not for himself alone but for the Queen...but when the Queen chose Bidam over him, Yushin apologized for all his shortcomings... for when he decided to serve his ruler (who is the queen) he decided to turn his back on the woman he loves so much(who is Deokman)  I guess that's what made the story more interesting and magical....

Kim Nam Gil or Bidam

Deokman and Bidam

The other half of QSD fans went wild to this couple; The love story started only almost in the last few episodes of the soap opera, but the impact is absolutely great..(I wonder why? Peace Bideok joke only). When Bidam came in the story, Yushin and Deokman love story was just starting, he was even a witness of theirr petty arguments, of Yushin's love for Deokman, and he was even with Deokman at the time, the Princess was grieving for Yushin's decision to join Yeong Mo in conjugal ties. Come on! Bidam witnessed everything, he knew what Yushin meant to her that he even went on his way to help yushin won the Pungwolju competition, because he knew it was Princess Deokman's greatest wish....He witnessed how Deokman tried to take care of Yushin while the one was still recuperating from his fatique after the contest.... not only that, during Mishil's martial law, I know you've seen this too, when the Princess with Chun chu was about to escape the palace and Yushin chose to be left behind, Bidam witnessed how the Princess became hysterical upon knowing that Yushin will not escape with them but instead chose to stay to stop those who will attempt to run after her. Bidam witnessed it all and yet he became an instant relief to the Princess' pains and heartaches.

Unlike Yushin, Bidam cares for the Princess more than anyone else in the world, or more than Silla. I am especially touched with the agreement he wrote himself, that if the Queen Died before him, he will leave Silla and his power and will not aspire for the Throne, for a nation will mean nothing to him without the Queen Deokman that he loves so much. About the Queen's personal feeling with Bidam, I want to believe she really has a feeling for Bidam, it was not realized instantly because she was in love with Yushin for the longest time and no one knows if she really ended that feeling or not, But then her decision to join Bidam in conjugal ties was based ,maybe on the reason that Bidam is more willing to give up everything for her.

Very touching love story that fits them

Princess Deokman is just like any ordinary Aunt who cares for her one and only nephew

Maybe one of the reasons why I love Queen seon Deok is I can relate to her. I mean regardless of Time difference all the feelings expressed in the soap opera are common human expressions... I see myself in her when she excitedly went to Inggang Palace to see Chunchu, and almost ran to her quarters when she thought Chunchu went there to greet her... She was still a nice Aunt, even if her nepher was not so nice in the beginning... Deokman was even willing to sacrifice her dream of becoming a Queen just to give to way Chunchu. One of my favorite and I consider most touching scene in QSD is when Chunchu finally joined her Aunt, and he asked he if she can vanguish Mishil, then he cried, calling his Mother and asked his aunt if she shed as many tears as he had... the background music which is the "Windflower" was just perfect in that scene, and Deokman was also shedding tears and embraced her nephew.... for me this is just unforgetable

After that scene, the Aunt-Nephew relationship became even better.... those scenes showing Deokman's concern for her nephew are few of my favorites. When they were escaping during Mishil Martial law, one soldier captured Chun chu and used him as hostage, and although Chunchu told his aunt to just leave him, Deokman dropped her sword and surrender, good thing Bidam came to rescue them. I remember Chunchu's reaction when he found out thru Yushin that her aunt went back to palace all by herself to confront Mishil and ask for open questioning. I remember Deokman almost had a heart attack when Chunchu was hit by an arrow, and she was really furious in the assemby hall....

I love it when she asked for Chunchu's opinion, and I really love it the most when she shared with Chunchu the covenant that Bidam wrote and asked his opinion about it...

I am deeply touch with their relationship, because it feels like they only have each other as family....

Chunchu- the Nephew

Rivalry between Yushin and Bidam

Bidam has reasons not to feel good for Yushin. Aside from holding Princess Deokman's heart, he unconsciously convinced Munno that he is the right person to own the books on geographies of the three Kingdoms. But Bidam maybe is insecure the most because Deokman only got her eyes on Yushin, and Bidam knew it all... Even in the latter part of the story he even asked the Queen, that if she will order him, he will do everything to save Yushin and will release Yushin from the Royal Inspectorate jail. But for me this is one of the saddest part of the story, how the characters changed and became opponent in the end..

I still love and prefer the early part of Queen Seon Deok when Bidam and Yushin joined hands to rescue the princess.

Bidam and Deokman scene

When Bidam insisted that the Queen should rest and sleep, that signals their mutual acknowledgement of what they are to one another. This is Deokman's or the Queen's first real relationship, where there is no need to suppress love anymore. It was very heartwarming and romantic. No kissing scene or excessing hugging but indeed love and care is in the air. I would like to commend Kim Nam Gil for great acting. The way I commend Uhm Tae Wong when he stared at Deokman with outpouring love. In this scene, Bidam's facial expression showed so much love to the Queen.... I guess this scene is one of the reasons why fans are mesmerized in their team up... and it's not even enough....

When Deokman gave Bidam a ring

the ring she gave him is similar to what she is wearing. Though I go for Yushin-Deokman, I was or I am specially touch to this . I feel for Bidam, he is a bit pathetic in this scene. He loves the queen so much but he failed to control his follower to get in the way. I guess this scene is one of the reasons why Bideok fans are crazy about them. The holding of hands really said a lot... and the suppressed love.... I guess it's the acting of  Kim Nam Gil and Lee Yo Won, that made us  televiewers to get affected too..  I am just wondering how are they feeling now after Queen Seon Deok, are they aware of the impact that they left us... what made this different to other love story that we had witnessed in the past? This is just great...no kissing scene or love scene and yet you feel real love.... deep love

How one's intention can ruin a good relationship

Bidam Deokman Drifting apart

It supposed to be a good love but people around them were against it, the worst they did everything to keep them separated, especially those of Bidam's followers. They just did not approved of the edict the Bidam wrote, that he will leave all his power and will not aspire for the throne once the Queen died ahead of him. If only Bidam followed Deokman's order for him to go and stay at Usan, it could be a different story...But Bidam's character is not the type to just keep quiet especially if he is the reason of the commotion. and that is the chance Yeomjong was waiting.. He knew Bidam's weakness and he knew how to fool him. Poor Bidam... I really pity him in the story...

The Queen's letter to Bidam

But he must need to make preparation and facilitate building of a temple
she ordered jukbang to deliver the letter to Bidam...
she ordered jukbang to deliver the letter to Bidam...

Too many If only's

The latter part of QSD has too many if only's. If only Bidam followed the Queen's order to just proceed to Usan, it could have been a different story. If only Bidam had enough trust with the Queen, before believing Yeomjong he must have returned to the palace and asked the queen instead... If only the Queen can take back her command, to just apprehend Bidam alive instead of capturing him dead at least they can settlle the roots and issue and punish Bidam accordingly.... The sad thing is they all know the subterfuges created by Yeomjong and Mishil's clan and yet it's like too late for them to settle it because the order to kill Bidam was already said. And Bidam why did he choose to get close to the queen that way... why chose to kill lots of soldiers and get killed too...

I find it very sad and . I can feel for Yushin when he asked the queen first, what to do in case they have captured Bidam, and the queen told him if he is asking if she changed her mind about her "killed Bidam Order", but the queen did not take back her command, though Bidam's death will hurt her too. I am specially touch when Yushin told Bidam to just stop it, but Bidam instead asked him for a real Duel for they never really had one... but the truth is he didn't face him but instead run forward near the queen, he said Forgive me Yushin we didn't really need to fight, you already won a lot of fights already... Resentment for Yushin's success I think?

But this is sad especially if we looked back on how they helped each other in the early episode and how their characters changed.

Can't Imagine the feeling

But if you fell in love intensely you'll surely feel for them... Bidam's reaction is normal....I guess with or without trust, that will be the initial reaction.. but after crying a lot, if I were him I will still talk to the Queen and tell her about it... beyond space and time, communication is indeed very important. But maybe it's part of the story... For Bidam to have trust issue.... For him to have weak character because of a mother who abandoned him, a master whom he believed took care of him because of his calling and not because he cared enough for him... When did he start doubting Deokman, Is it after Chun chu talked with him? this soap opera really turned our head upside down

In Queen Deokman's case, How would you feel if you saw your ring returned to you in a manner that it was placed in the corpse body... when you suddenly realized the one you chose to spend the rest of your lives with, had turned his back on you because of lack of trust.....NOt just for personal feelings but the shame it brought to her.

Definitely Queen Deokman had endured a lot of pain... and Bidam too...

Bidam"s confusion

When Bidam learned the truth from Jukbang, he didn't believe him at first, but then he let him go back to the queen and still very furious... but deep inside he knew something was wrong....this is what so sad about the story, as if there is no way to correct the mistakes and attempting to correct it or to go back to the queen means death.... One thing led to another, just when Bidam knew the truth, the command from the queen announcing Bidam as Enemy of Silla.

Bidam's Death

When Bidam Died

Watching Queen Seon Deok in my DVD player several times, I always find myself skipping this part. It is just too sad, and something inside of me is shouting that, Bidam's ending is just too cruel... But then I guess that is what made the story so unforgetable. I will say this again, QSD has lingering effects to all of its viewers. The actors and actress of the QSD have already moved on and started working on a new soap opera and movie, but the televiewers remained passionate with the film.

Why Bidam's death is sad...first, because we want him and deokman to end up together and no one maybe expected his tragic ending. Second, looking back on how he became instrumental in saving the princess, we have no choice but to regret what happened. It could also be the same feeling that the Queen felt. Aside from Love to a fiancé, Bidam was also a long time friend and follower. Her shoulder to cry on during her heartbreaks with Yushin, the one that treated her as a woman and the one who is willing to call her deokman.

You can't blame yushin when he asked the Queen first what to do in case they have captured Bidam, he also won't mind if the queen changed her mind, because in spite of differences with Bidam, too, they were friends and they walked along those arduous paths in supporting the princess. And he also cares for what the queen would feel...

Very sad Death Scene

Still with Yushin in the end of her life

Though it is sad, this is one of my favorite scene.until her death, Yushin was with her. Again I am touched with their timeless devotion, may it mean friendship or more, their love and confidence with one another is beyond compare. The Queen died very sad in the aspect of emotional fulfillment. Will it be more depressing if they showed the Queen's funeral and the lamentation of her supporters, closest friends, and love ones? I guess if those scenes were added tears will surely overflow.... the more it will have a lingering effects on us.... the focus on her hand that wore a ring, is an indication that she died at that moment in the mountain with Yushin on her side. again simple but with deep impact.

The Queen's Dream

The kind of ending that you can never forget

again though it is sad, I can say that the ending is good. The woman that embraced her in her dream as young deokman is herself, and she finally recognized her when she was nearing death. Her words has a very dramatic effect, telling young deokman that she will have arduous path ahead of her and she will see most of her love ones died. She said being a queen will make you feel like you gained everything but the truth is she gained nothing, probably referring to the sadness of walking the path alone.

But though in tears she smiled, saying that the yound deokman will be stronger enough to face all her adversities....her smile made me realized that maybe it is not too sad after all.

Favorite Scene in Black and White

Just love the Nangdo days

What is TV Photography?

This is very simple., I am sure I am not the first to do this thing. TV Photography is obviously combining two channels to have an output. Even non professional can do this.  All you need is Digital Camera and a Television Set. I am just using a Polaroid 7mp Digicam, the quality of the photos that you can produce depends on you, so you develop your own technique here, but I am going to share with you what I observe helped me produces some good photos.

All that I need in TV Photography

Thanks Vhenn for visiting, this is my personal pleasure that I would like to share with fellow QSD lovers. that's how I treasure QSD that I want it more memorable to me.. Yes it wasn't easy to capture every scene. I am just using a 7mp digicam, and you knew it in tv once the scene is over, it is over... unless I have a dvd copy, but I don't find it challenging anymore... thanks again for visiting

Hey co-QSD addicts, are you aware about this petition for another QSD ending? I think it's a very nice move for that particular fan who started this petition. I'm sure most of us wanted another ending, a happy one. I myself cant get much sleep trying to picture out in my mind 'what if the drama ended this way' or what if the directors added an intimate scene like this'.I think I'm getting crazy already.Haha! Really, it would be a relief if I would see an ending where Bidam was not brutally killed, and he and doekman were allowed to talk.I dont know with you guys but my heart is really crying out for this..A HAPPY ENDING FOR QSD!!!

Hi Deokman_7272k, I finally drop by as promised. Thanks for doing this for all QSD lovers. It brings me back the great times that how much I was in love with it, still is and always will be. I’ve never ever been so touched and captivated by the drama. Everything about it is awesome: the performances, story, music, costumes, settings, cinematography and directing, such quality production.

For me, I don’t dislike the ending. It makes greater impact and more memorable than otherwise. It connects perfectly to the last scene where she was in white, that she lost all her beloved ones and experienced the utmost loneliness, although she has all the power in the world and is a great ruler. Those few phrases summarized her whole journey, is well-done.

WOW! To the highest level na ito! I am a Mass Communications graduate and as if you have reproduced some of the episodes per clip! (Bravo!!!)

This just crossed my mind...what about a drama with Mishil, Dokman and Bidam. Mishil is the mom of Bidam who disapproves of Dokman!

Another story could be a love triangle Mishil vs Dokman over Yushin! Haaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!

Since you are a die hard Lee Yo Won fan, did you watch her drama Cruel Love in GMA? I didn't like her role there but she was very good in her acting and delivery, she was always sad and frowning in the series.

So glad that found this page! Thank you for posting this! I just love it so much!

About the info, I don't agree 100%. The scenarists, producers and actors gave a diferent idea about BiDeok and about the ending, too. [no offence, I'm just sayin! :* ] You said that she's not sure about her feelings, and that in the end she still loves Yusin, but it's not true. Lee Yo Won and the scenatist said that the queen was in love with Bidam, but she was scared because of her status. Also, she died with that ring on her finger, but remember...when she gave an identical ring to Bidam, it become an .."engagement" ring, so the scene is also known as "the engagement scene". And the fact that she's still wearing it at the end symbolises her love for Bidam.

And also she cries because Yusin dissapointed her a little. She asking : "Should we do it know?", and he says :"You make me feel awkward. Why are you saying such things?"

Then she cried, because she realise how lonely she is. If Bidam were there , he would say :"Yes, let's just runaway!"

I hope you're not mad 'cause I told you these things :D I just repeted what the actors & producers said.

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 6 years ago from Philippines Author

hahaha Anda of course I won't get mad, this is created for all of us QSD lovers to express what we think of the drama, I am obviously a Yushin-Deokman Fan that I wish it would be Yushin.. thanks for visiting..

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

I love this!! thanks so much for sharing! the Bidam-effect is too strong on me, usually i'll get rid of the obsession in less than 2 weeks but now its been nearly three months(i think its been rooted in my heartXD)I don't like the argument between the two polars although I'm a BiDeok fan, YuShin is a great character but too straight..haha..i like Bidam with his flaws^^

i think this drama drags sometimes and i wld prefer jewel in the palace, the biggest difference is i love the villian(MiShil) more than the protagonist in QSD and of course there's Bidam in QSD. i love love MBC historical dramasXD

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 5 years ago from Philippines Author

Mina thanks for visiting but don't worry you are not alone in that obsession. I am obviously Yudeok hahahaha so don't worry it's a healthy discussion. I am still watching QSD in my free time, I also like Mishil but I am a Lee Yo Won fan. Eveybody loves Bidam.. Have you seen his scene in Handphone where Yushin was also there? after watching QSD you will be shocked to see them in their roles in handphone, but they are still loveable..no doubt about that

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

Hi Maria! haha i cut some of the scenes into my mp4 and watch it infinite times haha..i was impressed and lost for words by Kim Nam Gil's excellent+brilliant acting at the dead scene..i have no problem in rewatching that scene but my sis would scream and shove my mp4 away whenever i show her that scene, its like a taboo..haha..

I haven't saw that movie! i heard that it's before QSD, i read that Uhm Tae-Woong beating him up in thereXD

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 5 years ago from Philippines Author

Minae try to search videos of it, it was banned at Youtube because Kim nam Gil had a love scene there though it was in cellphone it was sexy... he is the lover of the actress managed by Uhm tae wong and kim nam gil threatened him to expose the video, Even Uhm Tae Wong was daring there, he sang and dance took off his clothes left only short shorts, then dance with this half naked girl and kissed slightly her breast hahahah. the shock of my life... It's hard when you got used to their very discreet role in QSD... Both of them were bad in Handphone...

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

WOAH WOAH WOAH...even Uhm Tae-Woong did that? and i thought i already had one of the shock of my life when i watched The Potrait of a Beauty and No Regret.. i can't imagine Kim Nam Gil outdone himself in that Handphone love scene(pls pls no more> but Uhm Tae-Woong? this i gotta see! LOL..

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 5 years ago from Philippines Author

Minae, Kim nam gil is a good actor, he wants challenging roles always, no matter how awkward it can be... that's the reason he accepted QSD... I think KNG has many daring roles, what is potrait of Beauty and No regret? are they KNG Movies?

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

haha I'd watched Handphone trailer and it seems like a good thriller movie! erm..too many violent scenes though so i guess i have to watch it secretly haha. Uhm Tae-Woong's acting expression is great in there!

yup those are KNG movies, since I've become an obsessed KNG's fan so been checking out his old works hehe.. PoB is based on historical but there are too many unnecessary love scene, you can see breasts everywere!*faint* thats the most daring one i ever ever watch on a korea movie/drama...full salute to the actress bravery!!and for No Regret, its a beautiful sad gay movie(at least it ends in good), but there's another scene as well... haizzzz sometimes i really really speechless on KNG's braveness..haha

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 5 years ago from Philippines Author

Minae I think Uhm tae wong's scene is in episode 1, in a karaoke bar, then the one with KNG, Episode 13....

You must be missing KNG now in military service, for sure never missed bad guy? though I am a Yudeok I would love to see him and Lee Yo won again in another soap opera... I'll be crazy again.... thanks for visiting Minae from what country are you? I have plenty of friends in indonesia who loves QSD, Bidam and LYW

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

hi Maria! by epi 1 u mean the 1st part of the movie? haha i will watch it but i'm afraid i can't take it..YuShin's serious image still stuck in my headXD gah having exam next week and only until then i can catch up on Handphone and Modern Boy!

I'm missing and worrying him dearly..cos of the tension between the two Koreas. I still remember how i lost in shock when my friends jokingly told me KNG is going to warXD For the enrolment timing i guess its quite suitable for me, cause i'll be finishing my degree in this two years time and by then he will be release from the military, so i plan to go to South Korea to stalk him! muahahaha~~

i read that KNG is suppose to be cast along in LYW Soybean Paste movie? So so pity....if can i wanna watch KNG in short hair and cool style(like the one in When Spring Comes) and LYW in a modern love comedy movie! hehe.. I'm from Malaysia^^

Maria Cecilia profile image

I heard in KOrea, you will wait for 2 years before your favorite fair can team up again...so I ma waiting for Uhm tae wong Lee yo won soap opera and of course with KNG too

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

Really? I heard that its impossible to pair up twice. Haha but when I watched oh my lady, its the same guy with chaerin from dalja's spring, so getting my fingers cross for another pair up! But I think I wld like to see UTW pairs up with LYW and KNG with Han Ga-In in a drama! Love to see those together..

and South Korea is very strict about the stars.. I heard it won't be easy to go near them.. it's my dream to have photo with Lee Yo won and others... HOpe they can come to my country

MinAe 5 years ago from Malaysia

how strict? i don't think so..maybe some of the fans are great stalker! hehe..i think if you are patient, quick and persistent enough i don't think the artist will ignore you. They are all friendly in nature^^i watched a clip where a Thai fan went to meet KNG during his public service, and gosh he was so friendly like a big brother!and i can't watch it twice cause it makes me so jealous till heartache!! muahahaha..

I share your dream too.. at least please let me talk to them?? Except for singers, i think korean artists rarely visit other country fans.. Song Il Kook just left my country so i guess might be possible for others to come too! i want to go to your country if they came!!

sachel 5 years ago

hi! ang tindi pala talaga ng effect ng QSD no? hehe so I'm not so crazy after all... mahanap nga din yang handphone na movie... i have watched portrait of a beauty... i don't think i can bear watching KNG's homo movie. Hi MC! I am currently rewatching QSD. Will make a commentary as soon as I finish. Guess what! I am starting to appreciate Yushin! although not more, but equally as Bidam... Yung mga scene na ni-cut ng GMA ay flaterring pala for Yushin. Now, I understand the magnitude of his sacrifice... haay, kalungkot! sad!

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 5 years ago from Philippines Author

Sachel I will wait for your comments soon, my heart jumped when you mentioned Yushin. I still watch QSD too, now in Nangdo days when Yushin was chosen to join the defense minister in the war, I love that scene when he kept looking back and Deokman was looking too..

I am also waiting for your next hub....

Aleizhha, thanks you like this, well I tiI guess the easier to start your own memorabilia is to outline your thoughts.. You don't need to tell the whole story because the world already know about it.. You can Start with your own reason why you like the story, 2nd talk about your favorite actors/characters, then your favorite scenes, then your opinion about the ending, and last what else you have in mind

Hi le kwa thanks for visiting....who is your favorite Bidam or Yushil hihihi

kacci 4 years ago

I agree with you. It will always be Yushin and Deokman for me. I know that Deokman loved both Yushin and Bidam. But eventhough she chose to be with Bidam, I still believe that she loves Yushin more than ever. Its like, Deokman learned to love Bidam because she wanted to feel being loved as a woman and at that time, only Bidam is willing to do that for her. Still, she would have carried on normally even if Bidam is not in the picture. But Yushin, Yushin she can't live without. An analogy I can think of to best explain this is, Bidam is like a meal, very important to stay alive but of which she can miss once in a while. However, Yushin is her air. :)

Hello there QSD lovers :), Annyeong .....

First of all Maria, let me see say thank you for writing such a lovely review and insight about this great drama. Lol, I heard this drama already since years ago and actually it also was aired in my country back then. But I just didn't really like such Period/Saeguk genre like this which mainly due to the long episodes and heavy complicated plots. The other shallow reason is, how i hate seeing those hot duded in beards and all facial hair plus the tight knot of their hair, haha, how foolish i am then when just in few seconds Yushin appeared to the screen with his up rise hair knot all i can say is, whoah sexy!!!! kkkkk :D How QSD change my perspective bout the extravagant costuming, beautiful jewelries (i love that seoyopdo!) and cool grandiose armors worn by the boys.

Though i was late watching this for almost 3 years, i just still remembered how people and friends around me praising up KNG's Bidam and said, "That's what i call a man!" not to forget the Bideok awesome love story, the biggest love story ever in saeguk land. So i watched this series with full anticipation of what Bidam and Bideok could give me. However though, sorry for all Bidam and Bideok lovers, coz i disappointed.

QSD started in a very strong ground. Tight writing, great paces, nice subtle elements. I enjoyed the overall series up to the part when Deokman gained the throne. Then as MBC planned their 12 eps extension, the fluidity and story consistency started crumbling apart. Yushin and Deokman love story was written so beautifully so even when they have to be apart due to the existed real history, it still nicely done. The downfall was beginning right after Mishil's departure and MBC frantically trying to find anything to help the rating to up still.

I personally think that Bidam's switching side or personalities or whatever people can call it is to rushed and written so roughly. Mishil is the woman who heartlessly abandoned him simply coz he benefits nothing to be kept by her side. Yet Bidam feels nothing bout it? Yes there is great pain, but it's not strong enough to switch this carefree guy who never has a will to gain anything from his Deokman princess. The writer should give more time and deeper journey to ease Bidam's transformation to his dark side. I don't really comfortable watching him coz it's just too sudden and forced. Not the acting, KNG is just so great portraying him, my problem is with Bidam's transition writing.

The next is the love story. I'm a Yudeok. Yushin and Deokman's love is plainly larger than life. It goes beyond any physical limitation, they don't have to be together just to be together (and i hope you guys understand what i'm trying to say). I agree with someone here who said that Yushin is just the air for Deokman to breath. There's no way she can live without him and vice versa, but they're too big to live just as ordinary persons and they're fated to carry much bigger task than just fulfilling their love. Their separation is logical and acceptable.

However for me, Bideok love is just too rush to take place. I tried to bear watching eps 55 up when Bidam was trying to push Yushin out of Deokman's reach, but i couldn't help thinking that all i can see in Deokman's face is, "Now i'm supposed to love this guy right? Really? But how? When did it all start? I just couldn't remember coz i was suppose to see Yushin only in my eyes since my Nangdo days. That's how my writer created me! Right?" So because Deokman was confused, i'm confused too. I don't have problem with Bidam love though coz he's written that way since the beginning. His foundation is strong already.

So when the story tried its best to gear toward our queen started to prepare Chuncu for the throne (she knows she won't live long) and rushed Bidam to his rebellion (only for two episodes omg!) i feel cheated. Even Lee Yo Won said that she thought the series would end more on political note instead of love.

One thing to add to my long rant, oh sorry Maria, i do take this too long right? Hehe. I want to commend on Uhm Tae Woong's Kim Yushin portrayal. I really love his creation while despite he's not allowed to show his character's emotion but he managed to breath live, dignity, quiet charm and sturdy presence on his Yushin. That's how that character is written and i personally think anybody who gets that role will just as "dull" and "boring". There's no way we can compare KNG and UTW's character here coz both Yushin and Bidam are exactly two opposite poles.

And btw, I just love, love, love, UTW's light brown eyes. When the lighting is directly highlighted his face, it's as if his eyes are shining, esp at the scene when he purposely closed the palace gate during Deokman's escapade on Mishil's insurrection. That's one of my most fave scenes from this series.

Maria Cecilia profile image

Maria Cecilia 4 years ago from Philippines Author

Asyree, thanks a lot I really appreciate your very long comment, I understand you very well QSD really brought out great emotion from their audience, and that's also the reason why I have this hub. so that I have a record of my emotion then, and to pacify me too. Just like you I have disappointments too, and wished that the ending is not the ending that we know.

Obviously you are a fellow Yushin-Deokman shipper LOL, I like yushin too in fact I came to like Uhm Tae Wong because of that character, oh Yushing Rang has his latest drama "Equator Man", moving on I was an argument then with whom the queen is in love, I always say it's yushin, because we all knew it from the start....oh I love that scene in the cave, and Bidam was just watching them and even told Yushin to pursue Deokman. However these two characters, are also in love with Shilla and its people, and have you noticed, when one is emotional or mushy ,the other one is too stiff, remember that part when Yushin decided to marry the granddaughter of mishil, it was Deokman who was emotional confronting Yushin, but Yushin was so determined to save his gaya people and he also did it for Deokman because the gaya are her supporters. And remember that scene when the Princess decided to go back to the palace when her mother was killed (forgot the name) Yushin refused to let her go, saying he can't allowed his love ones to be in danger and Deokman said a man who can't sacrifice can never be my lover , well not the exact but something like that hahahah... but Bidam,, hahaha I dont know. I don't like it that the Queen decided to get married to him and even gave him a ring, but I was a bit sympathetic with him when his men started to do things so that he will doubt the queen. I don't like the way he died, but I like what he told Yushin, you have won't a like already... He knew that Queen's eternal love for Yushin. But on the other hand, I guess the Queen also love Bidam because he was willing to sacrifice for her, Bideok fans said, the queen died after Bidam, meaning she really was affected and was very sad with his death that she died too.

Anyway Asyree, thank you for your long comment you made me recall QSD. I have other hub about it, how are you going to end QSD if you were given the chance to change the ending... Thanks again

asyree 4 years ago

Haha dear Maria, thanks for responding for my long ranting. Aaahhh yeah, it's sometime frustrating to see such a lovely series crumble down like that. You're just right. Yushin and Deokman were doomed since their destiny fated them with path way harder and more difficult to walk on. Yes, their timing is just always off when it comes to their personal stuff. There's always bigger priorities, and more important things to consider than their own feelings. For Yushin, Gaya is like a dark shadow following him wherever he goes. It sometimes gives him problem more than benefits but he couldn't abandon them either. And at a point it irritates and hurts Deokman. She was extremely hurt when at the end Yushin still put Gaya above everything, above his own life, and even above her.

It was sad when she was dejected and so angry when she said why Yushin couldn't even leave any one of them but he could abandon her if that what it took (do you remember Yushin's "rejection" when he's jailed and Deokman finally dared to ask him after very long time, "What about me?"). I actually do think that as a part of the story line, Yushin's rejection is a perfect way to push Deokman forward to Bidam. Finally, she has someone who only thinks about her and ready to abandon everything just for her. I think no woman, especially as lonely and as tired like Deokman who wouldn't find this comforting and consoling. However, to smooth Bideok loveline it would be much better if the writer gives us hints that Deokman isn't that immune to Bidam's charm. That she too sometimes can see him as a man, not as a protected brother and soldier. Whenever Bidam approached her with either flowers in his hands, or holding her trembling hands with his, i want to see Deokman moved. But no, all i can see that she accept his affection like he's a brother or a carefree-soul soldier devoted himself to his ruler. If only the writer provided those hints earlier on Deokman as a safety net so whenever they needed a back up story, it would work well. Alas, even after years later the last question Deokman asked Yushin still was, "What about me?"

It's a simple question. No more words needed, but the question represented everything Deokman wanted to hear from Yushin. But as you said, once again, wrong timing. As a whole, it ruined all the Bideok possible love line plot to me. She needed Bidam, to make her feel as a woman again, to be loved and cherished, not to mention she already knew that she had a fatal disease and she wouldn't have much time to live. The couple ring she still wore was a symbol to me as her last wish to live a life as a woman, and partly as a reminder for her that she felt guilty for making Bidam so cornered.

Remember, Deokman is still a ruler at heart, who wish to protect and embrace everyone and she failed to do that for Bidam. Upon seeing her watching Bidam’s death and did nothing, then comparing it to how she became so hysterical when she watched Yushin chose to stay in the palace in order to block the soldiers and gave her time to escape, it’s just too different. When Yushin just broke down to tears when he saw how Deokman still wore the same ring like Bidam’s, it hit him very hard how she lead a lonely live and desperately trying to hold the last wish of her living like a simple woman. So sad, oh so so sad.

Lastly, i wanted to address how differently people responded to Yushin's wife pregnancy. Lol, i found this very funny and disturbing as well. Half of us and even Mishil's people saying how could he do that to his wife (? haha) when everybody knows exactly where Yushin's heart goes. The other half are mad coz they found Yushin appears like a cold fish upon hearing that his wife is pregnant, no joy, no smile, nothing. They think he's cruel and irresponsible for not showing it though he's the one who got the wife pregnant.

Well for me, we have to go back to Yushin's personality. He's an honest, upright, and a great man living his life with all ethics and codes a man should live with. Knowing that his wife was actually coming to the game only after he used her as his tool to survive and as pawn to their Silla throne chessboard, don't you think that he would feel guilty if he didn't treat her well? We all see how he spent almost whole of his time and devoted his life only for Deokman. How the two sat every night discussing this and that, and by day they would work side by side? If i were his wife, even if i knew why he married me and he could only saw one woman which is the queen in his eyes, then my marriage life still was a living hell. We saw how Yushin froze upon hearing his wife pregnancy, he never expected that and it could only give me a sad conclusion. He didn't touch his wife that often (it's an understandable POV from Mishil's lords coz they're just amorals and maybe they thought Yushin enjoyed his marriage life so much he was able to made her pregnant quite soon), but looking at how Yushin reacted, lol, i thought he's just touched her at their first night and nothing more going on and we know how baby can be made only after one effort. Even his wife never has time to talk about this to him and only after they arrange some time so her dad could visit her and Yushin tried to spare some of his time. Sigh .. he didn't even know or hear that his wife wasn't ok and boom! she's pregnant. Poor Yushin!!

Ah Maria about UTW, i first watched him in Cyrano Agency which make me aware how strong he is as an actor, then i followed with Man of Equator. Have you watched him in Resurrection series ? People say that's one of his best where he plays as twins with two contrast personalities, later in the drama his character develops so much so then he plays 3 characters at the same time. He's that bloody good!! This the Youtube link of the drama and it's in HD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KANog4V70RQ , the writer was inspired making this after she read The Count of Monte Cristo.

And still about UTW, are you interested watching him as himself? He's one of the member of 1N2D, a korean traveling trip variety show. It's a total mindwrecking comparing his strong intense roles to a super shy quiet adorkable guy, who blushes around girls, lives with mum and bad at math and child games or any games require good coordination of hands and feet! He's that awkward! http://ithetimes.wordpress.com/category/variety-sh... this is the site where you can watch it online, he started appear on eps 194, but too bad the 1st and 2nd part of the show are already blocked. Tho this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r22xI6kZGc give a cut on his very 1st appearance on that show.

The show itself is very amusing and very funny. Basically it tells us what to visit in Korea, and the specialties each areas has but it is presented to us in a very entertaining way. This site recaps each eps of the show and they started recapping it with UTW's 1st appearance http://www.dramabeans.com/tag/1n2d/

Hopefully it's useful for you, hehe, enjoy reading and watching! :D

Asyree I can understand hahaha, me too I was like that before, there was an argument about who she really loves, and yes I remember her reaction when Yushing rang decided to be left behind so he can stop the soldier from following the Princess.. that's one of my favorite scenes actually, when the relationship among them were better. Bidam also came there to rescue them with his people (Oh I forgot the name of that man who betrayed him). About Yushin and his married life hahahaha, it's like to imagine how he was as a married man, but yes other QSD fans talked about that, how the wife became just a decoration (the same fate with chun chu's wife, another grandchild of mishil). But as you can see she fell in love with Yushin, remember how she begged her father with Yushin's mother when Yushin with alcheon rang and Yushin's father were being tortured to protect deokman. But you know Asyree, Yushin is still a man, you know , it will be a hard feeling to work closely with the woman you love restraining yourself everyday, so his outlet was his poor wife.. and since QSD never really focus on the deeper love of the two in the story, if you were Deokman, the pain will be doubled knowing Yushin made his wife pregnant LOL. so behind the scene our queen endured a lot of pain. Yushin too but everything he did, is for the queen. Remember what he said, when he chose to follow the Queen he decided to turn his back to the woman he loves so much who is Deokman. Oh I can't forget that scene when Deokman was finally acknowledge by the king as the princess, everybody was happy except for Yushin Rang....... But even so when Deokman was still a princess, everyone around them seemed to know how she and yushin like each other. Even her King father knew it, in fact he was a bit affected too upon knowing that yushin was getting married but he had to understand why Yushin was doing it, For me their love is timeless... until the end she was with Yushin. And even in his old age, Yushin was seen visiting the queen's tomb... hahahah I feel like I want to watch it again but it's too long..

Oh Maria, i thought i have typed something about Tae Woong here, lol, i gave you some links about where to watch him in other programs. I dunno why it didn't appear, lol. I've UTW and KNG in Handphone and gosh how the two were just different species there!!! hahaha. UTW being so selfish and willing to do anything in any ways to get what he wants, and so does KNG. Lol, KNG was such a big loser there. I also watched KNG in the movie Portrait of Beauty, and one of his drama which is "Goodbye Solo". KNG wasn't the lead there but the second lead and he's portrayed as a weak mind guy who's only interested to gain his own benefit and didn't mind to deceive his best friend and his girl friend to keep them (in the story he was told to have a very poor and sad background but he lied to his best friend rich family that he's from rich fam too so he could stay in his BFF house and had strong support from them). KNG's character was so pathetic there i couldn't even pity him. The drama writer is said as one of the best drama writer in Korea, no fluffy sweet meaningless dramas from her but humane and deep ones.

Asyree thanks for sharing the link and so sorry for late response, I visited the link and you know I realized fanfic started when fans were not contented with ending of some love angle or other scene hahahaha, I also read a lot of fanfic for other dramas but this is the first one that I saw from queen seon deok... the creative side of individual was triggered lol..
