An Introduction to Photo Editing Tools

What is a Photo Editor?

Photo Editor is a digital image editor tool. It is also known as an Image Editor. It offers you editing of your digital photographs easily. Most of the photo editors are user friendly and so easy to learn. It is more easier to use if you have basic knowledge of photography and have an artistic vision.

There are many online and offline photo editors. Most of them are available for free to use as well as in paid versions.

Here is the list of the things you can do with using a Photo Editor:

1. Crop a Photograph

Many times you require to crop a part of the photograph to remove unwanted part of it. This helps the photograph to look better.

Many times you require the photograph in a specific Length-Width ratio. Many times, the original composition while taking the photograph is wrong or not suitable for specific use.

By using the Crop Tool in the Photo Editor, you can easily crop a photograph. You can crop a photo as you want, or in a specific Length-Width ratio. For example, you can crop it in 1:1, 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 5:6, 5:7, 6:9, 8:10 and many other ratios.

2. Adjust Brightness and Contrast

If a photograph is dark, you can brighten it, and if the photograph is bright, you can darken it. If a photograph is dull or soft, you can improve contrast of the photograph. On the other hand, if the photograph is contrast, you can soften it.

3. Resize a Photograph

You require to change the size of a digital photograph for many reasons.

You can resize the width and length of a digital photograph easily by using a photo editor. But resizing a photograph is not limited to adjusting width and length. You can change the DPI (Dots Per Inch) of a digital photograph. By changing DPI, the file size of the photograph also changes.

4. Sharpen or Blur a Photograph

Many times you need to sharpen a digital photograph if it is blurred, and soften a photograph if it is sharper. Photo Editor Tool helps you to sharpen a photograph or soften/blur it. You can do all this with the entire photograph in one or two clicks, or a specific part of the photograph by giving more time to the work.

5. Put Text in a Photograph

By using a photo Editor, you can put text into a photograph. You can put a simple text or rich text. You can choose a specific font and color for the text. Other option like outline, shadow etc. also available for the text.

Further, you can put the text to the photograph as watermark.

6. Remove Spots and Red Eye

You would have seen red pupils in the eyes of a person or even of an animal in a color photograph. Red eye occurs because of the flashlight, if the flash is very close to the lens of the camera.

By using a photo editor, you can easily remove the red spot in the eye in a photograph.

Similarly, you can remove unwanted spots, lines, etc. from a photograph.

7. Combine Two or More Photographs

You can easily combine one or more photographs by using a Photo Editor. You can combine them vertically or horizontally.

8. Change the Colors

You can change the color of an entire photograph or a specific region of it. You can transform a color photograph into a Black and White one, or into sepia color.

Many times, the colors in a photographs are dull. You can make them rich by using a photo editor.

Many other times, a color photograph has a color cast, i.e. one of the color is very rich. This affects the the color balance of the photograph. By using a Photo Editor, you can remove the color cast.

Another great use of a photo editor is to color a black and white photograph.

9. Change the Bakground

You can change the background of a photograph. You can put a plain color, scenery, monument or whatever you want as a background.

10. Rotate, Flip and Much More

By using a photo editor, you can rotate a photograph in 90 or 180 degrees or any specific degrees you want. You can flip a photograph horizontally or vertically.

You can do many more things like distort a photograph, create a cartoon from a photograph, add special effects, add texture to a photograph, white balance, put back light which brightens dark portions of the photograph, put border to a photograph, add layers etc. There are many advanced features also.

Very useful information. I'm neither artistic or knowledgeable about photography but fortunately some family members are. Many pictures come out with red pupils so nice that can be fixed and I didn't realize you could make a building look straight. Very cool and voted up!

A trick I use is PowerPoint. You can crop the photo, flip and rotate. You can also group other objects to it or group photos together. You can then save the group as a single image as a jpeg, gif and other formats. PowerPoint is not a photo editor. However, if you are in a real hurry to get a picture out of a camera and into a word document, such as a brochure, program, etc., it can be a quick solution, especially, if you have not yet learned all the features of the photo edition software. I was fortunate enough to inherit my computer from my last job with Photoshop installed. That program can do amazing things far beyond my need or ability, but I do use it to improve the resolution of a picture that I had to grab from an Internet site--no copyright violations involved.

I can't imagine how digital print will look like without Photo editors, their user friendliness is amazing plus you can accomplish a lot within minimal time. Useful article and voted up.
