Should artists stick to a unique style they enjoy or many different styles to please more people?

Please think about art's history before you answer this question...

As individuals with their own rights and tastes and interests... they should do whatever they feel like scratches their artistic itch at the moment.... or whatever they feel is most lucrative if they are pursuing the almighty dollar.  This holds true with any form of art or any type of artist... be it sculpture, painting or writing articles on subjects of interest..

I am a beginning artist myself.  I have to say that an artist should explore every style and medium that appeals to them.  First, the work they perform is a reflection of themselves.  Secondly,  an artist may discover he/she is good at one medium but phenominal in another.  They may break new ground in a medium and create a new market!  If you like art, be a free spirit and go towards what brings you the most satisfaction.

Although I wish it weren't true, most critics/galleries want to see an artist that has a large body of work that has a theme (style, medium, and size all have to mesh).  I love to use every medium but I create art more for myself than the market.  It took picasso a long time to find his unique spin.

Do what you enjoy and there will always be some people that will love what you do, that's the beauty of people and the different taste in art we all have.
